In Japan there’s an amazing charity exhibition of Blythe dolls which take their inspiration from well known manga characters. Included in the exhibit are Blythe dolls dressed up as Tezuka’s Black Jack (shown above), Cardcaptor Sakura, Cyborg 009, Felix the Cat and Minky Momo: Read more…

In Japan package design is very influenced by the idea of gift giving — and as an otaku I’ve always love the fact that attention to detail and inclusion of little goodies tends to find its way into DVD packaging. The above illustration is for the DVD set Kimba the White Lion: The Courage to Begin a New Future. Of course Kimba is quite an old lion of anime at this point, but I love how the studio has the courage to play with a new look and take a chance with the illustration. For the October 29th release of Weekly Shonen Champion the publication features a nice illustration of Tezuka standing next to his manga creation Black Jack. This is the 80th year of Tezuka’s birth (born on November 3, 1928) which nicely fit in with the 40th anniversary of the magazine: Read more…

This latest promotional Astro Boy clip is titled Escape Metro City, but it’s more like Escape Pixar City. The more I see of the upcoming Astro Boy flick the more I absolutely hate it. It’s bad enough having to watch every other film trying to poorly imitate Pixar, but then to see such a classic anime character get dragged into the mud is humiliating. This clip sums up while I won’t be standing in line: We’ve got A list actors doing C- voice acting, poorly timed animation that telegraphs its punches and a great deal of eye candy over substance.

Why did the makers of the new CGI Astro Boy decide to “improve” upon Tezuka’s original design and outfit our hero in a preppie styled sweater and pants? The other thing that makes me sad about this first preview is that the rest of the characters make this look like every other CGI movie that’s ever been made. This won’t win over the old fanboys who might take the kids, it won’t win over the kids because it looks like everything else, and I can only guess how the Japanese will feel about this wardrobe upgrade.
