Calvin and Hobbs x Chewie and Han T-shirt

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 23, 2010 in Fandom, Star Wars

chblog3

I love Calvin and Hobbes, and I’m sure by now you’ve probably seen every Calvin and Hobbes crossover your mind could dream up, but none of the ones I’ve seen to date have really felt as perfect as this illustration, and t-shirt by artist Chris Wahl. Not to imply that Chewbacca’s a devious prankster who takes pleasure in occasionally tormenting Han, at least, as far as I know, but they certainly share a friendship that only the two of them really understand. Either way, it’s easily one of the coolest crossover t-shirts I’ve seen in a long time. If you’re interested in picking one up, head over to Redbubble and order yours for a mere $22.

A Backpack Fit For Intergalatic Bounty Hunting

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 21, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Boba Fett Backpack 1

It might seem a bit unwieldy, or dare I say a tad cartoonish — if that’s even a word — but I’m pretty sure this is probably one of the coolest plush backpacks a kid could ever want. Modeled after Boba Fett’s original jet pack, as seen in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, this plush bag comes complete with multiple pockets and adjustable straps that fit both kids and adults alike. There’s even multiple pockets for documents such as Death Star plans, thermal detonators, and more. If you’re interested, you can pick one up from ThinkGeek for roughly $50, though if given the choice, I think I’d rather have C-3PO myself . Still, no kid in their right mind would ever want to haul a protocol droid around school if they could have a rocket pack instead, right?

Empire Strikes Back Lego Chess Set: Why Can’t I Buy This?

Posted by Michael Sacco on Sep 16, 2010 in Star Wars

Star Wars Lego Chess Set

Brandon Griffith, who created the A New Hope chess set made of Lego bricks, followed it up with this awesomely detailed Empire Strikes Back set. The base (which itself is pretty neat) opens up to store all the pieces inside. The only problem? There’s only one, which means I can’t buy it. My shields can’t repel sadness of this magnitude. From Sienar to Soylent, Business Cards for the Common (Hench)man

Posted by Michael Sacco on Sep 6, 2010 in Cinema, Star Wars, Television

Fantasy Biz Cards

You know, a lot of our favorite movies and TV shows deal with some sort of fictional company, from the independent business (Paper Street Soap Co.) to the megacorp (Massive Dynamic). We always see the men and women who run the show, but we rarely see the men on the ground, the salt-of-the-earth types who keep keep these fictional businesses going by performing mundane tasks in low-paying positions. Does Jack Tesler, part of Umbrella Corporation’s maintenance personnel, even know that he’s technically a henchman? Probably not, but at least he’s been provided with a cool business card, courtesy of Fro Design Co. Fro’s latest collection, titled “Day Jobs,” features mockups of business cards belonging to normal people who just happen to work at twenty-one made-up companies covering the entire geek spectrum, from Cyberdyne Systems all the way down to Duff Beer. Quantum Quest to Feature Jedis, Sith, and Starfleet and More

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 2, 2010 in Cinema

Quantum Quest

I’m not even sure how I’ve never heard of Quantum Quest. Sure, it’s not the latest Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks venture — a fact that becomes rather evident the moment you see the trailer for the film — but with a cast out of a sci-fi enthusiasts wet dream, you’d think it would have had a bit more press. Perhaps featuring Jedis and Starfleet Captains in the literal sense might have garnered a few more headlines,  but unfortunately they’ve had to settle for their voices instead — still an amazing feat nonetheless.  According the official website, the cast includes Chris Pine, Samuel L. Jackson, Hayden Christensen, Robert Picardo, Brent Spiner, James Earl Jones, William Shatner, and Mark Hamil among others. Read more…

A Tickle-Me Chewbacca doll? Maybe Not

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 1, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Talking Chewbacca Plush

You shouldn’t be tickling a Wookie any way — what do you take them for, Ewoks?  This 9 inch Chewbacca plush kind of looks like it could be a Tickle-Me-Elmo, though. Either that, or one of those clowns in an arcade shooting gallery. You know which ones I’m talking about, I’m sure. All kidding aside though, it’d probably make a much cooler gift for any nephew or son than an Elmo doll. It even roars — or does its bear gargle, if you will  — when you push on his belly. I’d take that over Elmo’s annoying laughter any day, wouldn’t you? They retail for roughly $26, so if you’re looking to pick one up, head over to NeatoShop.com and even though you’re not ordering it through the official Star Wars online store, don’t fret, it is an officially licensed Star Wars product.

They Have McDonalds in a Galaxy Far Far Away?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Aug 31, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Millennium Big Mac 2

While this is awesome, it’s also kind of terrifying. What you see before you is Lego enthusiast Angus MacLane’s entry into the FBTB MOC Madness 2010 Building Tournament. Each year, Lego Star Wars fan site From Bricks to Bothans hosts the tournament, and in a nod to Empire Strikes Back, this year’s tournament requires you to create your own intergalactic bounty hunter, and their ship.  Angus took this opporunity to create his very own McDonalds-inspired Corellian freighter, piloted by what appears to be Ronald McFett and an R2-Grimace. Why he decided to mix the two is completely beyond me. Besides, I’ve always thought the Millennium Falcon looked more like a York Peppermint Pattie.

Star Wars Finally Set For Blu-ray Release

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Aug 17, 2010 in Star Wars

Star Wars on Blu-Ray

There’s been plenty of news from last weekend’s Celebration V event floating around the net, but everyone seems to be talking about the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray release, set for 2011. As you can imagine, I wasn’t too excited about the prospect of having to purchase yet another set of these films, no doubt remastered with more pointless and potentially annoying edits by George Lucas — let’s face it, Han shot first. Fortunately, I can justify the purchase as the discs will include never released deleted scenes. While the exact number or content of scenes have yet to be revealed, a short clip of Luke building his lightsaber in Return of the Jedi was shown during event. The clip was subsequently uploaded by fans to YouTube, but Lucasfilm was quick to have it removed from the site. If you’d like to try and catch a glimpse of it while you still can, you click here.

Adidas Helps You Share Your Inner Wookie

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Aug 11, 2010 in Star Wars

Adidas Star Wars Wookiee Coat

Plan on visiting Hoth anytime soon? Can’t afford a Taun Taun? Don’t worry, Adidas has you covered. The latest addition to their Star Wars inspired Adidas Originals line happens to be a Wookie inspired jacket. I’m fairly certain that no Wookies were harmed in order to make these, but they definitely look warm enough. I just wonder if it actually comes with Chewie’s signature bandolier, as pictured above. Sure, it seemingly served no purpose, but you have to store your thermal detonators somewhere, right?  The jacket will be available later this year, and while there’s no current price listed, expect to pay handsomely.

Your Bedroom Walls: A New Hope!

Posted by Michael Pinto on Aug 9, 2010 in Star Wars

Star Wars Classic Full Size Wall Mural

In the disco era this mural is what every sci fi fan would have loved in their bedroom (well every sci fi fan who still wasn’t hoping that Star Trek would come back): This Star Wars Classic Full Size Wall Mural is a huge nine-by-fifteen feet and will be available later in August. While the price tag is a bit high (over $250) what’s nice about this mural is that it isn’t peel-and-stick but is “water activated” so it’s easy to take down. Although if you’re looking for a more traditional fanboy decoration you might check out this place that offers these nifty uncut printers proof posters (which are just a tad more expensive): Read more…

Death Star Blueprints Are the Empire’s Worst Kept Secret

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Aug 5, 2010 in Star Wars

Star Wars Blueprints

It was only a matter of time before someone decided to print the Empire’s precious Death Star floorplans. Available via ThinkGeek, this set of 5 double-sided posters will provide you with some of the highest detailed diagrams from the series to date. Ever wonder what Vader had going on under that suit? How about a hyperdrive? That’s right, it has all of that and more. While I can’t personally vouch for the validity of these diagrams — I hear the Death Star plans were actually found on the floor of Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood, California — I’d like to think the novelty of claiming you own them should be worth the purchase. Besides, you never know when you’ll have to make a trench run.

Adidas Drops Their Latest Kicks in Carbonite

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jul 13, 2010 in Star Wars

adidas star wars han solo sneakers

The Han Solo SL72 sneakers are the latest addition to the Adidas x Star Wars footwear line that was announced last year. The silver scheme, and tongue design is inspired by Han’s carbonite coffin from Empire Strikes Back, but the shoes also feature small details from his costume, including his signature belt and the red trim from his pants. Pretty slick if you ask me.  No word on how much they cost, but they’ll be available later this fall. Until then, you’ll have to make due with Hoth-inspired Rebel duds, and a pair of sneakers fit for the Dark Lord himself, which currently retail for $167 and $133, respectively. Check the Adidas online store for more details. Read more…

Show Some Support For Your Favorite Android Lovechild

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jul 6, 2010 in Star Wars

Tee Fury's Star Wars Lovechild T-Shirt

You know, it seemed inevitable. C-3PO and R2D2 always seemed so inseparable, so it would stand to reason that they may or may not have given birth to an illegitimate lovechild-droid. At least, web dev and caricature artist Jon Plante, seemed to think so — I just never imagined it’d be so hilarious or horrifying . That said, it sure makes for an awesome t-shirt. The shirt is currently available at teefury.com for only $9 plus shipping, but if you want one, you’ll need to hustle. Due to the format of the site, the shirt will only be available for the next 24 hours and once they sell out, they’re gone forever. If you’re worried about the quality of the shirts, I can actually vouch for them as I order from the site quite often. For more of his work, you can also check out Jon’s infrequently updated web comic Celebrity Skinned. Pizzazz: A Long Lost Marvel Youth Culture Mag from the 70s

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jul 1, 2010 in Battlestar Galactica, Comic Books, Star Wars

Pizzazz magazine published by Marvel issue #1

The late 70s wasn’t the best of time for the comic book biz so Marvel took a look at Dynamite magazine and Starlog magazine and created their own youth culture magazine called Pizzazz. The magazine was an amazing mirror of pop culture during the disco era of 1977 until 1979 and lasted a total of 16 issues. The inside of the publication featured articles on popular films, a Star Wars comic and even a one pager by Harvey Kurtzman. Read more…

What If Luke Skywalker Was An Incompetent Moron?

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jul 1, 2010 in Star Wars

Ever wonder how things would have turned out if Luke Skywalker’s cocky attitude during the mission briefing ended up causing his trench run to fail miserably? Well, now you can see how that would have probably played out in this hilarious short. As you’ve probably guessed, a fan edited together the final moments from Episode IV: A New Hope, re-cut to tell a slightly different storyInstead of saving the day, Luke shows up late to the party, ignores the force, and ends up missing his shot while trying to destroy the Death Star. Han, on the hand, has much better luck having managed to shoot down Vader. In the end, Luke’s a bit of a poor sport, but at least the good guys still prevail.

Show Your Imperial Pride With This Stormtrooper Graphic Tee

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 29, 2010 in Star Wars

db4e_super_trooper

Check out this awesome “Super Trooper” graphic t-shirt from the guys over at ThinkGeek.  Based on the original stormtrooper helmet, it might seem a bit minimalist, but honestly, wasn’t that sort of the point of stormtroopers in the first place? Sure they were a bit too utilitarian, and seemingly incapable of actually hitting anybody they shot at, but you have to admit their armor looked pretty sharp — not to mention being color-coordinated. Then again, I guess it’s kind of hard to go wrong with black and white, it certainly makes for a great t-shirt at the very least.  You can pick one up for roughly $20-21. In ‘Defense’ of George Lucas

Posted by Gia Manry on Jun 25, 2010 in Cinema

In Defense of George Lucas
I’ve been thinking a lot about those often (and not unfairly) maligned films known collectively as the Star Wars prequels– episode I (The Phantom Menace), episode II (Attack of the Clones), and episode III (Revenge of the Sith) –due to the subject coming up in a couple of interviews, and I’ve been thinking about the anger and hatred George Lucas receives from a particular set of Star Wars fans. Here’s why he doesn’t deserve it…kind of. Read more…

Darth Vader Shows Off Some Imperial Designer Fashion

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 23, 2010 in Fandom, Star Wars

John Woo's Star Wars Designer Fashion Illustrations

I wasn’t sure what I should title this post, but I was toying with the idea of calling it Abercrombie and Sith. I’m sure some of you are staring at these fantastic water-colored illustrations and wondering what exactly you’re staring at. Believe me when I say that I’m still kind of wondering about it myself. The various illustrations feature a variety of masked villains from the Star Wars Universe — and Jar Jar, regrettably — posing in designer clothing from labels like Viktor & Rolf, A.P.C., Band of Outsiders, Thom Browne. New York and more. The artist responsible, John Woo, not to be confused with the film maker, is actually quite a talented guy. If you want to check out more of his work — and trust me, you do — visit his website. Read more…

Is the Pen Mightier Than the Light Saber?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 17, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Star Wars Light Saber Hikaru Ballpoint Pen

The coolest thing about about the Star Wars Light Saber Hikaru Ballpoint Pen is that not only does it light up — but the possibles for office antics are endless! Although my fear that most fanboys will afraid to embrace their inner Jedi and instead leave these magical writing instruments in their original packaging where no doubt they’ll sadly catch dust on a bookshelf.

Super Shogun Stormtrooper is Super Huge

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 15, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Super Shogun Stormtrooper

This is probably the largest stormtrooper toy I’ve ever seeen. At 24 inches, Super7’s two-foot-tall take on the Imperial stormtrooper comes complete with a spring loaded rocket propelled fist, and wheels. Why it would even need those is beyond me, but I’m not one to complain about the extras. Still, it’s not like it really needed them. It’s a two foot tall storm trooper wielding an E-11 blaster rifle, and that’s more than enough reason to want one if you ask me. Here’s the kicker, though — it’ll cost you about $299. Crazy, right? At least the details are pretty stunning up close. If you’re still willing to empty your wallet or bank account, you can order one online via the Super7 website. For more info on the toy itself, check out the mini-site here. Read more…

A Fanboy Follow-up; Obishawn, the Man Behind the H-Wing

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 10, 2010 in Fandom, Star Wars

Shawn "Obishawn" Crosby

The other week, we posted some photos of this amazing Star Wars-themed car mod known as the H-Wing. Shortly after that,  I was contacted via Facebook by the man who built it, Shawn “ObiShawn” Crosby, who provided some additional info about the vehicle and his work. ObiShawn works as a toy, prop and game designer, and had constructed the car’s modifications himself — an effort he attributes as the culmination of these interests. So what was it that really impressed me?
