It’s not like expectations were high for Pixels, a feature-length adaptation of a neat short. What sounded like a shaky concept for a film was soon torpedoed when it was announced to be an Adam Sandler vehicle. Even the presence of Peter Dinklage couldn’t boost interest that much. And so this trailer is pretty much a confirmation of that line of thinking. It gives you the plot justification you’re curious about and shows a bunch of gags, some of which are admittedly amusing, but which you could imagine would get very tiresome when stretched out over 90 minutes. Basically, the whole joke of this trailer boils down to “Man, isn’t it crazy that videogames, of all things, are killing us?” There, let’s all move on. Read more…
After all this time, Space Invaders is finally getting adapted. Yup, Warner Bros. and producers Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, and Tory Tunnell will produce a Space Invaders film, presumably having only the barest resemblance to the original game. It’s not like there’s a rich lore to dig into anyway! Then again, good movies have been made out of stranger things… take Pirates of the Caribbean for example! That was pretty good (the first movie, at least). I don’t know: I think I’ve become too cynical to be interested or excited for this. I think I’ll just ignore it and if it ends up good, then I can bother with it. That’s way more sensible, right? Read more…
Check out these awesome necklaces from Land of Rapture, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Yeah, that’s coming up soon, and chances are you’re going to want to get a special something for your special someone. So how about this cute Space Invaders Heart cameo? I’m sure there’s some clever joke about Space Invading your heart or something along those lines hidden somewhere. Space Invaders not your thing? Try Doctor Who, R2D2, or Portal! There’s a little bit of everything on their site. Read more…

ThinkGeek recently updated their stock with this awesome Space Invaders hoodie. Not only does it speak to my inner-gamer, but it’s actually fashionable. I love a good argyle — top that off with some 8-bit prints and I’m sold. With those April showers less than a month away, picking one of these up might not be such a bad idea. Normally they retail for roughly $60, but ThinkGeek actually has them on sale for 50% off list price for a limited time. That means only $30 before shipping. Head over and order yours today.

Okay, technically I don’t know for certain whether it’s actually the world’s smallest, but this laser-cut acrylic Space Invaders cabinet is pretty darn small at five inches tall. There’s even a little in-progress game on it! If you’re keen on making your own out of 3mm acrylic, you can grab the pattern for it, but bear in mind you do need a laser cutter to do it. Though, admittedly, it’s easier to get a laser cutter than it is to get an actual Space Invaders cabinet, use a shrink ray to make it five inches tall, and convert it to acrylic at the molecular level. Ostensibly, anyway. Read more…
What’s great about this Space Invaders couch design by Igor Chak is that not only does it appeal to my inner videogame, but its modernist look makes my inner design geek happy as well: Read more…

This is Space Invaders: Infinity Gene — Square-Enix and Taito’s latest attempt to revive the Space Invaders franchise. In all fairness, I haven’t actually had a chance to play this yet — though I might at this week’s E3 — and my first impressions are based on the video above. Still, I find myself completely confused by everything I saw. Sure it’s neat, and innovative, at least by comparison to the classic Space Invaders I knew and loved, but it’s as if the designers simply refused to draw a line. As a result, we’re left with a mess of lines and shapes which I really had trouble making heads and tails of. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen the formula work — Geometry Wars was a great example — but until I really get a hands on with it, I’m simply not sold on this and I’m left wondering if I’m the only one who feels that way. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it is to find decent formal wear that really speaks to my inner geek, but occasionally I luck out — such was the case with this fantastic Space Invaders inspired neck tie by Since 1337. The aliens are available in both green and blue, while both look sharp, the green might come off a bit loud. Unlike the game, it’ll probably cost you more than a few quarters at $38 plus tax and shipping, but they’re probably worth it. After all, they’re designer ties. For more info, check out the Since 1337 online store. Read more…
Nothing says 80s more than oversized hip hop jewelry — of course if you want to take it to the next step having your bling as a homage to Reagan era videogames will give you that nice extra touch of bling! And that’s where Blingvaders comes in: They’re oversized jewelry based based on the sprites from Space Invaders: Read more…
