New Pokémon Revealed for Pokémon X & Y

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2013 in Videogames
pokemon
Looks like Game Freak and The Pokémon Company are having a bit of fun with everyone, as they have revealed a new Pokémon for the upcoming game pair, Pokémon X & Y, but have not revealed anything about it. Yes, here’s some new images and a short trailer of a new very Mewtwo-like Pokémon, but as far as a name or details about its abilities, there’s nothing. Of course, the fanart machine is already in full force, so there’s plenty of people excited about this reveal, but several fakes and wrong information are floating around despite the official news. Check out the video below! Read more…

Pokemon Snap Meets Jurassic Park In Gritty Fan Trailer

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 21, 2013 in Videogames

Gritty Pokemon Snap

Pokemon Snap is one of those underrated games. It may be a short game for kids, but there are very few other games out there like it, and none as enjoyable or memorable. The fact that Nintendo failed to make a sequel for Wii is a shame, one that I hope is rectified with the Wii U. In the meantime, fans are picking up the slack. Read more…

Pikachu 3DS XL Arrives in the US

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Videogames

pikachu

It’s true! That rare and elusive Pikachu 3DS XL from Japan will be making its way overseas, arriving on March 24th. So yes, now you can get your hands on this bright-yellow, electrified 3DS. Given that it’s coming out next week, it’s a bit surprising that Target will have it on sale for $159.99, but it will a limited edition. No news on how “limited” that will be, though. I would recommend getting it though, if you want it, because who knows how long it’ll be around. Click here to see it in the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon commercial, or more images on the Pokemon site here. Read more…

Finish Catching ‘Em All With A Free Meloetta In Pokemon Black & White

Posted by Bob Muir on Feb 5, 2013 in Videogames

Meloetta

No matter how accomplished a Pokemon collector you are, it is currently technically impossible to have caught all 649 Pokemon. (At least, officially — let’s ignore the hackers.) That’s because Nintendo has yet to make available the last event pokemon, Meloetta. Sure, the game doesn’t require it to complete your Pokedex, but if you’re going to bother to catch ’em all, you might as well go all the way. But now, Nintendo is finally giving out the rare Meloetta. Read more…

What Really Happens To Professor Oak’s Pokemon?

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 15, 2013 in Videogames

Professor Oak Meme

For most people, Pokemon is a light-hearted game or cartoon about obsessively collecting weird animals and making friends. But of course, those who grew up with Pokemon are now old, and they’ve been deconstructing all the strange parts with simple logic and often a good dose of dark speculation. So here’s a question: what does Professor Oak do with the pokemon you leave and your rival leave behind at the beginning of the game? Read more…

D-Arts Charizard Pokemon Figure Up for Pre-Order

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 12, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

charizard1

How much do you like Charizard? If you’re a Pokemon fan, these excellent D-Arts figures are probably right up your alley. Their previous Mewtwo figure was an awesome model that was really well-sculpted, and this new Charizard looks to be just as good. Super-poseable and brightly colored, I think this will be an excellent addition to any Pokemon fan’s collection. He’s set for release in April, but you can pre-order him now on Amiami, so you can have a reserve when he eventually arrives. Now, what Pokemon are they going to release next? Maybe a trainer? Nintendo Announces Pokemon X And Pokemon Y For 3DS

Posted by Bob Muir on Jan 9, 2013 in Videogames

Pokemon X & Y

Nintendo was teasing a major Pokemon announcement, and the latest Nintendo Direct delivered. Despite the 3DS being out for almost two years, Nintendo hasn’t made a main Pokemon game for it yet, with Pokemon Black 2 & White 2 getting a DS release. Now, Nintendo has confirmed an October 2013 release for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, which features the main games’ first ever 3D world, more dynamic 3D battles, and of course a slew of new pokemon to make up Generation 6. Harmo Knight Is Coming West From Pokemon Developer

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 6, 2012 in Videogames

Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight

Game Freak, the studio that makes the main Pokemon games with Nintendo, is putting out their first non-Pokemon game since 2006’s Drill Dozer. Rhythm Hunter Harmo Knight is their take on the runner genre, with a fantasy hero running automatically while the player controls the jumps and attacks. Each stage is a song, as the hero must gather notes and whack enemies in time with the music. And while this was previously only announced for Japan, Nintendo confirmed a Western release during their latest Nintendo Direct! Read more…

Fans Recreate Movies And Games In Scribblenauts Unlimited

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 22, 2012 in Cinema, Videogames

Scribblenauts Unlimited - Ghostbusters

Scribblenauts Unlimited is out, and if you’re unfamiliar with the series, it involves a boy solving simple puzzles by generating objects with his magic notepad. The dictionary includes a ton of nouns, so you can summon pretty much anything. What is new in Unlimited is the ability to create your own objects, and since the series typically avoids anything copyrighted (beyond some cameos like Mario in the Wii U and 3DS versions), gamers can now recreate their favorite characters and creatures in Scribblenauts‘ adorable style, as seen in the Ghostbusters screenshot above. Battle Championship Winners In New Pokemon Black & White 2 DLC

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 20, 2012 in Videogames

Pokemon 2012 World Championship

With the Wii U out and fully “online” compared to the Wii, you’d think that Nintendo was finally getting the whole “online gaming” thing. Of course, none of their games are online, and while there are cool things about it (notably the Miiverse social network), there are many missing features found in PlayStation Network and Xbox Live. But hey, baby steps! How about releasing some DLC for a recent game like the DS’s Pokemon Black 2 and White 2? Read more…

New Pokemon D-Arts Mewtwo Figure Looks Awesome

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 5, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

mewtwo1

Looking for the perfect figure to top off your Pokemon collection? Well if you weren’t, you are now. This new figure from D-Arts of Mewtwo is.. well… awesome. It’s got a ridiculous amount of articulation and in general looks solid. He comes with a projectile, a Pokemon stand, and if you pre-order in the first wave, a small figure of Mew will come included as well. Sadly, it looks like he’s sold out at most of the usual haunts online, but if you keep an eye out you might be able to catch one. Mewtwo releases in March for ¥3,990. Read more…

Charizard 3DS XL is the Best Special Edition System Yet

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 29, 2012 in Videogames

charizard3ds

Check out the new limited edition Japan-exclusive 3DS that Nintendo is dangling in front of our faces – a Charizard-themed Pokemon 3DS. The cover is pretty cool, right? Nice design and it looks slick – and then you open it up and see the flames rippling across the back. Kudos to whichever artist at Nintendo came up with that one… pretty clever! Much like the Pikachu 3DS XL from earlier this year, you need to enter a drawing and win to be eligible to even pre-order this system. Hopefully this will eventually show up here – the Pikachu one is making an appearance in Europe, so there is some small sliver of hope! Read more…

Mix Alpacas With Pokemon To Get…Alpacamons

Posted by Bob Muir on Sep 25, 2012 in Anime, Videogames

Alpacamons

File this under “cute,” “strange,” and “why the hell not”: Inspired by a bunch of bootleg alpacasso plushies, artist DeviantArtist “yuumei” created these fusions of alpacas (essentially cuter llamas) and pokemon (essentially cuter anythings). The notable aspects of various popular pokemon are appended to a baby alpaca’s fuzzy, cute body. Read more…

Pénnymon: Cute, Tiny Generation I Pokémon Models

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 17, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

jsT8X

Looking for a project to tackle? Most try a diet or building a treehouse. However, Redditor Ninjazzy had a different summer project in mind: creating all 151 original Generation I Pokémon out of Sculpey clay. And every single one fits on a penny. They’re really adorable, and I can’t imagine the dedication needed for this project. Hopefully Ninjazzy will throw some of these up on Etsy, because I know a lot of people who’d love to have figurines like these. Click here for the full gallery, and look below the break for a few selections! Read more…

Nintendo Grows Your Pokemon Collection With A Free Keldeo

Posted by Bob Muir on Aug 21, 2012 in Videogames

Keldeo

The Pokémon train keeps rolling, with Nintendo releasing the first numbered sequels in the series this fall, Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2. However, no matter how diligent fans were at catching them all in the original Black and White, there is no way they actually managed to catch all the Pokémon coded into the games. Why? Because some Pokémon are only distributed at special events, and it’s about time for another one of those! Read more…

Pikachu 3DS XL Will Sell Like Hotcakes (in Japan)

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 19, 2012 in Videogames

pika3

That’s because it probably won’t come out here! While the 3DS XL is only coming out today in the US, Nintendo has already been hard at work making special edition versions of the console exclusively for Japan. Starting August 25th, pre-orders will be taken only at Pokemon Centers in Japan for an adorable Pikachu-branded version of the popular handheld. The actual system will be released on September 15th, but only those who pre-ordered will be able to get one. Perhaps some import stores will have them for sale, but my guess is that this 3DS will be hard to come by for US Pokemon fans. Read more…

Rolling in the Pokeballs

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 4, 2012 in Videogames

Who knew that the lyrics from Pokemon’s opening theme, Gotta Catch ‘Em All, lined up so well with Adele’s Rolling in the Deep? Ian Bonds did (aka Insane Ian) and with some help from his girlfriend’s vocal talents, he created this very clever and well-done parody song. Is it just me or have fan-made parody songs been really well done this past year?

Pikachu Is On Acid

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 22, 2012 in Fandom

Yes, this is the most bizarre video I’ve seen this week. It’s also very, very well animated. It’s a little NSFW too, unless your job approves of Pokemon on acid (wish I could work there). High5Toons has done a great job showing what would happen if we took the Pokemon’s move’s names literally. And really, the image of Pikachu rubbing a balloon on his head to generate a static charge had me laughing. That’s just clever. Anyway, on with the Pokemon acid-trip!

Pokemon Black & White 2’s Anime Short

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 17, 2012 in Anime, Videogames

Nintendo has decided to promote the upcoming Japanese release of Pokémon Black & White 2 with a lengthy animated short. Like the Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC trailer we posted earlier this week, the audio is in Japanese only, but the animation itself is pretty gorgeous and worth watching. Japan’s getting their hands on both sequels next month, but we’re stuck waiting till fall for own localized copies. Before you ask, no the game won’t feature any animated cut-scenes like this, but that’s alright since we’re getting to view this online free of charge. I just hope Nintendo of America takes the time to dub the short in the months leading up to our North American release later this year.

Pokemon Black & White 2; Same Colors, New Content

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 12, 2012 in Videogames

Pokemon black & white 2

A few months back, Nintendo stunned us all when they announced a direct sequel to last year’s Pokémon Black & White, instead of opting for a new set of colors. Today, a few more details have emerged regarding the upcoming sequel. Set in the same region as the first game, Pokémon Black & White 2 will start in a new city located in southern Unova, featuring an entirely new cast, and story. Two new protagonists, male and female respectively, have also been announced, both clad in the usual active-wear, with the female protagonist reportedly sporting Princess Leia-esque hair buns. Olly Moss Does the Original 3 Starter Pokémon (And More!)

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2012 in Design, Fandom

pokemon3

Olly Moss has been one of my most-watched artists recently. Very few people have the consistently excellent output he’s had. You’ve probably seen his work floating throughout the ‘net at some point, especially his popular posters he’s done with Mondo. Just recently, he released four prints at once, the three original starter Pokémon and Pikachu, which sold out almost instantly. So why not take a look at some of his other work? Read more…

Pokémon Gets Its Own Gritty Live-Action Fan Film

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 22, 2010 in Cinema, Videogames

Much like Eddie LeBron with his recent MegaMan film, a fan has taken it upon himself to create  his own live-action adaption of one of their favorite video games having been failed repeatedly by Hollywood. This time, it’s none other than Nintendo’s kid-friendly Pokémon, entitled Pokémon Apokélypse. Natrually, you’d expect the film to share much of that same aesthetic, however this time, that’s not the case. Instead, we’re given a gritty — almost humorously so — realistic depiction of the original story complete with over-the-top villains, torture, violence, and more. Of course, I can only speculate on just how gritty the film is based on the trailer above, but I’m sure you’ll probably agree when I say that it was probably the last thing I would expect from a Pokémon film — fan-made or otherwise. For more information, including an interview with the film’s creators, click here.

A Pokémon Tribute Tune

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 1, 2010 in Animation, Fandom, Videogames

This heartfelt videogame filk song comes from Alex Day who is based in the UK: It’s the first of a trilogy of tunes which also includes tracks dedicated to the other retro gaming gods — Mario and Sonic. Day got his start in music when he sold his deck of Yu-Gi-Oh! playing cards and used the money to buy his first electric guitar — which was followed a year later with his own YouTube channel. I first discovered Alex when he uploaded a Dr. Who song to YouTube and I’ve been a fan ever since — it’s great to see someone celebrate their nerd passions with music. Read more…
