There are lots of indie games out there making either conscious or subconscious references to games of yore. Part of that is because of the solid, pure design some of these iconic games featured, and part of that is because of affectionate nostalgia. But it’s not often that a retro-inspired game has been in development for so long that it could practically qualify for an “retro” game itself, and not just because it looks like an NES game on steroids. Perhaps I’m just out of the loop, but I must admit: I didn’t even know you could purchase comics on your PSP or Vita. The service will be shutting down October 30th, and anything you own on the service will be available to download until mid-January 2013 (licenses permitting). I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, you could download a huge variety of stuff on the PS Store. Still, it’s a little sad to see another option go, especially since a digital manga store is opening up for Vita owners in Japan around the same time this one closes! Back before them kids started messing around with their Calamity Triggers and Continuum Shifts, Arc System Works had another fighting game: Guilty Gear, the spiritual successor to BlazBlue. Due to some copyright shenanigans with Sega, Arc System Works lost the rights to make Guilty Gear for a while, which meant no more endless iterations instead of a proper sequel. But recently, the rights returned to their rightful owner! And now we have a new release of an old game, headed to super-powered videogame platforms! Read more…

Finally, a reason to dust off Sony’s latest handheld. If you bought a PlayStation Vita at launch, but have already exhausted the system’s limited selection of titles, then you’ll be pleased to hear that PlayStation (PSOne) titles will finally be supported when Sony launches its 1.80 firmware on August 28th.

Foregoing traditional launch tactics, Sony staggered the launch of their PlayStation Vita by offering several different bundles for their new handheld. Having had an opportunity to play several of the launch titles at industry events over the past year, I’ve been dying to pick one up, but with several different bundles available and retailers offering their own deals, deciding which to get and where to shop can be a bit tricky.
