Something bright and colorful caught my eye earlier – it was the trailer for Monster Hunter Stories, a new spin-off RPG set in the Monster Hunter world. The game was reportedly five years in the making, and is set to come out in 2016. While details are scarce (and this is a CGI trailer), it appears the game will eschew typical Monster Hunter gameplay and instead play “within the boundaries of an RPG, while still preserving the core sensibilities that people have come to associate with Monster Hunter.” That quote comes from series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. Perhaps this’ll finally be a Monster hunter game I can get into?! Read more…

Capcom’s Monster Hunter is still a huge series in Japan. The latest in the series is Monster Hunter 4, and will be showing up on the 3DS on September 14th… in Japan. Hopefully we’ll see it arrive on western shores eventually, but for now you can just drool over their cross-promotion with Nintendo: Mario & Luigi costumes for the Felynes, and Link armor and weapons for your character. Now you can slay monsters with the Sacred Bow or Master Sword while your assistants run around with mustaches on. I’m sure it’s been a long desire of yours. The trailer is embedded below, or you can watch the full Monster Hunter Nintendo Direct here! Read more…

Monster Hunter may be very popular in Japan, but it hasn’t always gotten its due in the West. It has a loyal fanbase, but not every installment of the game has made it across the pond. So considering the fact that the Wii U’s Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an upgraded version of the Wii’s Monster Hunter Tri, it’s cool that Capcom is still bringing it out in America. Cooler still? The game is getting some solid technical upgrades. Read more…

I read about the mythical Hello Kitty/Monster Hunter costumes over a year ago, but I didn’t get a really good luck until some kind folks posted them to Flickr. I have to admit that there’s something very surrealistic to the idea of wearing a costume of Hello Kitty wearing a costume and then the other way around. Read more…

It should come as no surprise that Japan is bonkers about games involving hunting, collecting, and/or fighting monsters. But as it turns out, the country is so in love with monster-wranglin’ genre that even the flagging PSP can sell like hotcakes if the games are there! In fact, the PSP was the best-selling system of 2010 in Japan, due in large part to Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, which sold over 3 million copies in its first two weeks of release. But even Monster Hunter’s sales were eclipsed by Pokemon Black/White, which helped the Nintendo DS into its spot as Japan’s #2 best-selling system. Read more…

The minute I came across these two cats I was impressed: There’s something ever so cool about outfitting two elegant felines in medieval attire and then giving them the most silly accessories that you can imagine. The two kitties in this case are from the Capcom title Monster Hunter, and in the game they do everything from mundane chores like cooking to the more exciting gigs like distracting giant creatures. On the left is Airou who carries an oversized paw on a stick, and on the right is Merarou who prefers a giant tooth on a stick.
