It’s time for more Lupin III! A brand new Lupin III series will be coming in 2015 to Japan… and Italy! The series will actually premiere first on Italy’s RTI channel in spring of 2015, then Japan next. It’s still early, so no news yet on where it’ll stream or air in other countries. The story of the series itself will take place in Italy and San Marino, featuring a blue-jacketed Lupin. Veteran director Kazuhide Tomonaga will be the chief director (he’s done incredible work in the past, including the iconic car chase scene in Castle of Cagliostro), Yuichiro Yano will be series director, Yuuya Takahashi will write the scripts, and production will be done by Telecom Animation Film. That’s an impressive staff, so I’m pretty excited about this new series! Read more…

You just can’t keep Lupin the Third down. Originating in 1967 as a manga about a gentleman thief, there have been three anime series, countless movies and specials, and one cheesy live-action film. There’s a new Lupin III live-action film on the way to Japanese theaters on August 31 (around the release of The Tomb of Daisuke Jigen, a new anime film in the franchise), and it’s looking better than the last one. Images of the actors have been released, and they look pretty close to their cartoon counterparts. Jigen in particular Since FUNimation often licenses Lupin III movies, maybe they’ll pick this one up at some point? Read more…
Want to get excited for a new anime? How about a new Lupin III series? Starting April 4th in Japan, viewers will get to see Lupin III -The Woman Called Fujiko Mine- on the small screen. It’ll focus on Fujiko Mine in particular, and is said to want to recapture the “sensuality” of the series in a “daring interpretation” of the original series. Of particular interest? The staff! Sayo Yamamoto, director of the series Michiko to Hatchin (an excellent cult favorite), will be directing the series, and Takeshi Koike (director of the ridiculously awesome Redline – watch it) will be handling character design and animation direction. An excellent lineup! Read more…
I have a huge love for classic anime films, especially Miyazaki. A little Lupin III doesn’t hurt either. Castle of Cagliostro is one of my favorite films, but if you’re a figure collector there’s only been a few worthwhile items out there (although they did make a model of the castle itself). Luckily, Dive has been bringing out several Lupin III figures, with their most recent being a Castle of Cagliostro version of Fujiko Mine. She’s roughly 8 inches tall, and is going for ¥6,825. As an old school anime fanboy I found myself drooling over this collection of Lupin III figurines from Japan. Of course the sad catch is that this line is a limited edition series, and in order to get them you have to be part of some lottery system — and as such are forced to buy in Japan. I realize that I’m just looking at the photos from Banpresto but the wonderful level of detail and craftsmanship is quite eye pleasing: Read more…
Do you want to look like Fujiko Mine from Lupin III? Well here’s your chance: Bandai will be rolling out a line of cosmetics that are based on the beloved anime series by Monkey Punch. I love the fact how some of the items in the line are shaped like bullets — although I’m surprised that Bandai isn’t doing a line of jewelry given Lupin’s occupation. Read more…

Not to date myself, but I grew up watching Lupin III episodes on VHS from Japan — my all time favorite episodes of the show were the ones directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki as we all known known is an animation genius, but when you put that together with Lupin there was a real sort of magic. Lupin III started life as a manga and the first episodes date back to the 60s, but when Miyazaki got his hands on the show it went from being a manga adaption to a place in television history.
