I think I discovered The Romantic Gift Shop sometime in the 90s by pure accident while wandering around Chinatown. Located at 151 Mott Street in New York City this little shop was an amazing oasis of everything Sanrio! Frankly the store was designed for the more youthful residents of Chinatown who were looking for stationery goodies, but if you were a Hello Kitty fiend this little gem was one of the best kept secrets in all of the city. No it’s not Meow Mix, but the Meow Mixer! This Hello Kitty Kitchen Hand Mixer comes with a red or blue dress, and they claim that it’s easy to clean the metal mixer part. Although if you are a hardcore kitty fan I couldn’t imagine you actually using said device clearly it would be on display or kept in an unopened box to ensure the collectibility factor.

What makes this blanket strange to me isn’t that it’s a Hello Kitty blanky, but the fact that it’s a heated blanked that plugs in the USB port on your computer! The website selling this pink goodie recommends that you either use it for “over air-conditioned offices” or “during the winter months when you’re sitting in front of your computer”. Although for the record we should note that a good old fashioned analog cat can keep you warm by sitting in your lap: Read more…

To decorate your home in a fanboy style you just never want to settle for just average! One thing that I do every year to start things off properly is to order a calendar from Japan: The first cool thing is that you notice is that Japanese calendars tend to be oversized, in fact they’re more like posters with the dates thrown below. The other thing you notice is that the artwork and approach is just more creative — you tend not to see the same old image that’s associated with your favorite thing. But best of all you can find interesting off beat subject matter that you won’t find anywhere else, shown above is a good example from the Hibari Misora 2009 Calendar. So this year to share the love I’ve picked out my top nine crazy cool Japanese calendars that are worth checking out: Read more…

This new Hello Kitty Alarm Clock is purrfect for those who like to travel — when you flip it open you use the mirror to see just how tired you look too. The fun thing about a Polaroid camera was that it was always the perfect party device due to its instant gratification. These days digital photography has replaced that, but there’s something nice about walking away with a print that you don’t quite get from being tagged in Facebook. That’s why I got a kick out of this Canon SELPHY CP770 Hello Kitty Portable Printer which is due out in November — I think it’s going to be an ideal party accessory. In fact more and more my hunch is that you’ll start to see what use to be on the desktop become more mobile, playful and stylish. And who knows, perhaps one day we’ll see a return to an all-in-one digital camera/printer ala Polaroid.
