Game of Thrones Has Record Piracy, Who’s Fault Is It?

The arguments over piracy are never-ending. From the legality to the methods, people will continue to argue over downloading copyrighted content till winter comes (and then some). The debate just got a boost recently, when news started making the rounds singling out Game of Thrones as the most-pirated show this year. In fact, the April 30th episode received 2.5 million downloads in the first day it was up. Erik Kain called out HBO themselves, saying “they have only themselves to blame.” In addition, HBO co-president Eric Kessler’s quote from November has been brought back up, where he stated that “cord-cutting” is a fad and that customers will flock back to cable once the economy settles. A Feast of Ice and Fire

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 23, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Television

A feast of Ice and Fire cover

Having read all George Martin’s on-going saga A Song of Ice and Fire, as well as having seen every episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones to date,  I feel one aspect that remains consistently featured throughout would be the food. Martin often takes his time writing detailed descriptions of Westerosi cuisine, from their aromas to the taste itself. So, naturally Bantam has decided to use those descriptions to help craft A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook, in what I can only guess as being a sad attempt to cash in on the Game of Thrones-craze. That said, I really wouldn’t mind taking a look at some of the recipes included in the book. Martin certainly makes them sound appetizing enough when you’re reading his novels, so I would hope the authors & chefs involved could succeed in capturing the taste. A Feast of Ice and Fire should hit shelves May 29th and will retail for $35.

Game of Thrones Playmobil Trailer: GoT Never Looked So Adorable

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 21, 2012 in Fandom, Television

Is winter coming? Watch plastic bleed as HDMprojects on YouTube recreates the Game of Thrones Season 1 trailer with Playmobil figures in one of the cutest renditions of Game of Thrones I’ve seen in a while. It’s probably just because they’re all smiling the whole time – endearing, or just creepy? It’s also surprisingly accurate, all the way down to the lighting and environments. The real question is, though, would you re-watch the whole series like this? Read more…

Game of Thrones Minecraft World is Mighty Impressive

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2012 in Fandom

People make tons of crazy things in Minecraft. It’s one of those games where you can honestly make anything as long as you put your mind to it. Heck, people have made 8-bit computers in Minecraft. The latest creation catching the internet’s eye is a replication of important locations and lands from Game of Thrones within Minecraft. Best part is that you can visit this world on the creator’s Westeros server. Now you can finally walk through Winterfell for real! Well, mostly. Great work guys!

HBO’s Game of Thrones in 22 Minutes

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 26, 2012 in Television

HBO has thrown together a twenty two minute special summarizing the entire first season of Game of Thrones. If you’ve already seen the series or read the book, the video provides a decent refresher course, but otherwise, there’s quite a few spoilers. If you plan on watching the series in its entirety, or reading the book instead, you’ll want to steer clear. For me, it’s the first time I’ve had a chance to catch Emilia Clarke sporting her natural brown hair. It’s a real shame she has to dye it blonde or wear a wig for her role of Daenerys, she’s quite stunning as a brunette. Season two premieres April 1st on HBO. Read more…

Seven Devils of the Seven Kingdoms

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 5, 2012 in Television

Here’s the latest trailer for second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, and perhaps the most breathtaking yet. The clips they’ve used contain some fresh footage, and are spliced together beautifully. The music is also quite striking, in a haunted sort of way. Then again, if you’ve already read George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings or A Storm of Swords, then you’d find it appropriate given the events that will take place this season.

An Invitation to the Game of Thrones

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 21, 2012 in Television

HBO’s at it again, having just posted this little featurette with the cast for the second season of Game of Thrones. Seeing how passionate the actors feel towards the show itself speaks volumes and serves to remind us of how magnificent the show really is. In addition, we get to see some behind-the-scenes footage from the set, as well as a glimpse at some of the new actors who will be joining the cast next season, although none of them were interviewed.

Spoiler-free Game of Thrones Promo Posters

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 20, 2012 in Television

Game of Thrones Season 2 posters 1

This weekend, HBO released a series of spoiler-free character posters advertising the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. Set to premiere this April, the second season will follow second novel in George R.R. Martin’s award-winning series A Song of Ice & Fire, picking up right where A Game of Thrones left off. Having read the books, I’ve been dying to talk about it, but I’m afraid of spoiling anything for those who haven’t had a chance to pick up the novels. Without spoiling too much, I can assure you this next season should be full of action, suspense and intrigue. They’ll even spend more time north of The Wall. Check out the posters after the break and remember, Game of Thrones season 2 premieres April 1st on HBO. Read more…

A Board Game of Thrones, 2nd Edition

A Game of Thrones the Board Game 2nd Edition

I have a bit of a soft spot when it comes to board games. Recently, I banded together with a group of friends for a weekly game and while we’ve no shortage to choose from, my friends are always in the market for more. With HBO’s second season of Game of Thrones around the corner, this little gem caught my eye. Fantasy Flight’s A Game of Thrones the Board Game. Read more…

A Look at Cyanide’s Game of Thrones

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jan 10, 2012 in Videogames

To be fair, I’m not sure what to think of Cyanide Studio’s upcoming Game of Thrones RPG. Seeing as A Song of Fire and Ice is a bit of a hot commodity right now, we would expect the license to land in the hands of an experienced developer. However, that didn’t happen. Instead, in what I can only imagine was a stroke of luck on their part, Cynaide Studios will be delivering several games based on the popular series, the first of which will be a third-person roleplaying adventure. Entitled simply Game of Thrones, the plot follows two survivors of Robert’s Rebellion as their decisions lead them on separate paths throughout the land, only to once again unite them against common enemies in an attempt to save the kingdom. First Look at Game of Thrones Season 2

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Nov 21, 2011 in Television

HBO recently released a production trailer for their upcoming second season of Game of Thrones. I believe the new season will cover the events of the second novel in the on-going series of novels A Song of Fire and Ice, entitled A Clash of Kings. The trailer shows off some of the new faces will be seeing throughout the season, as well as the return of several fan favorite who managed to live through last season — there might be a spoiler or two for those who haven’t read the book or seen the show, but nothing that should ruin it for you. If you haven’t seen the first season, it’s currently available for pre-order via Amazon and won’t hit stores until January 10th. If you’d rather just read, or listen to the book itself, both the audiobook and original novel are currently available at your local retailers, or can also be purchased via Amazon or iTunes.

The Where’s Waldo of Westeros Maps

Posted by Michael Sacco on Jul 9, 2011 in Fandom

Westeros map

HBO’s Game of Thrones finale got you in the summer doldrums? Need something to pore over while you wait for A Dance with Dragons to be released in stores? A good place to start would be this huge, detailed, spoiler-filled map of the Seven Kingdoms of the Game of Thrones universe (click to embiggen!). This particular map was created by an artist going by the name of Other-in-Law, whose gallery also features a bunch of other GoT maps as well. But this one is probably the crown jewel of the collection, filled with Easter eggs for observant fans. Read more…

A Game of Thrones Finale Review: OMGWTFCoK!

Posted by Gia Manry on Jun 20, 2011 in Fandom, Television

110620 - GoT

HBO aired the last episode of its adaptation of Game of Thrones, the first book in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, last night, and by and large the response is: OMGWTFCoK! CoK, of course, referring to A Clash of Kings— the second book in the series, which HBO will also adapt. And which everyone who watched all of Game of Thrones is now salivating for (even if they already read the novels).

But before we get too excited for the second season, which hasn’t even been slated for broadcast yet, let’s talk about what HBO did right (and wrong) with the series so far. (Spoilers: they did almost everything right.) Read more…

A Song of Japan and Covers

Posted by Michael Sacco on May 13, 2011 in Pulp Fiction

A Game of Thrones

No, not that kind of song, and not that kind of cover either! We’re talking book covers here. George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is getting a Japanese translation via Hayakawa Publishing, and a few well-known manga and video game artists have provided covers for the series’ run. Ken Sugawara and Yasushi Suzuki have some of my favorites on here; it’s pretty great to see such a different take on the characters compared to HBO’s recent (very successful) Game of Thrones TV series. Game of Thrones’ HBO Premiere Gets Dated

Posted by Michael Sacco on Jan 9, 2011 in Television

A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones, the first book in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels, is getting its crack at breaking into another media type: television, courtesy of HBO. Sean Bean is even in it, proving that there’s no fantasy series that he can’t improve. And if you want to catch it, you’d better tune your DVR for Sunday, April 17th, because that’s when the series will premiere, according to Entertainment Weekly. Martin himself seems pretty excited about the series, though he notes that fans shouldn’t have unrealistic expectations of the series’ quality: “We don’t have Peter Jackson’s budget!,” he says. Even with that in mind, though, the show looks like it’ll be pretty fancy for a TV fantasy show. Maybe the fanciest ever. Read more…
