Every retailer has to have their own special edition these days — game pre-orders with bonus DLC, box sets with unique covers, or promotional goodies inside. Amazon just added an image and page for their special edition Game of Thrones season 3 boxset, and it looks exactly like the posters for season 3. But it’s sculpted out! Pretty neat in concept, but to be honest, I never really liked that poster. It seemed so bland compared to the previous marketing visuals (although some of the applications of it were interesting). But, if you want to pick up this boxset, just hop on over to Amazon’s page — it’ll run you $105 and releases February 18th, 2014. Read more…
We last heard about Game of Thrones casting news with Pedro Pascal, who will be the Red Viper. Next up? Indira Varma, an excellent actress (perhaps most well known as Niobe on Rome), who will be playing Ellaria Sand, the Red Viper’s paramour. We’ll leave the descriptions at a face-value level, so as not to spoil anything for viewers (although, fellow book readers, the cast continues to be wonderfully on-the-nose, eh?). While season 3 was arguably the best Game of Thrones season yet, season 4 will have just as many shocking and exciting scenes – if not more! I can’t wait to see the reactions. Also, a deleted scene from season 3 was shown at Comic-Con featuring Tywin and Pycelle, and I’ve included it below the break. Don’t watch it unless you’ve seen season 3, though! Read more…
You thought you’d have a break from news about Game of Thrones now that the third season was over (and I’m sure many of you are still collecting your emotions over that), but guess what? Now casting begins! One of the most important roles to cast for next season is the Red Viper, Prince Oberyn Martell. HBO has wasted no time in casting this role, and have announced that Chilean actor Pedro Pascal will be the man for the job. Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss released a statement saying, “the Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back.” There are a few minor spoilers in the EW article, so tread lightly. Read more…
Game of Thrones season 3 premiers tonight! Are you going to be watching? I know I will! In the time between season 2 and season 3 I consumed all the books in the series ravenously, and now have joined the hordes waiting for the Winds of Winter, but there have been plenty of you waiting even longer. Those of you who were there since the beginning. And this Axis of Awesome song, Rage of Thrones, is for those poor souls. A salute to all of you who reads the books before the show and now have to suffer all your friends catching up. The music video is a bit NSFW, containing swearing and someone’s behind – but if you’re already watching Game of Thrones… Read more…
With the third season of Game of Thrones ramping up for arrival on the 31st this month, HBO has been turning the cogs of marketing, shuttling out trailers and clips galore. Thankfully, none of them are very spoiler-filled, so you can get a quick peek at Jaime and Brienne trekking across the countryside, or Tyrion and Cersei having a verbal battle. The latest trailers also begin to show more of the new additions to the cast, so eagle-eyed readers might catch a glimpse of Daario or other characters. So here’s all the clips combined into one big post! Check out the videos below! Read more…
Can’t take the agonizing wait for Game of Thrones season 3? Maybe you missed out on season 2 and want to be caught up without having to marathon all the episodes? Or maybe you’re just looking for a quick recap to refresh your memory of all 200 characters? HBO has you covered. They’ve released an almost 15-minute recap of season 2, mixed in with some interviews and staff discussions. This will hopefully keep you occupied for a short while. But thankfully the wait is almost over, as the third season will start March 31st. It’s sure to be the most exciting season yet, and I say that as someone who has read the books. So I’ll stop taunting you – watch the video after the break. Read more…
Are you ready for season 3 of Game of Thrones? I’ve been waiting for this season for what seems like ages, but it’s almost here. HBO has finally released the first real trailer for it, and let’s just say it looks fantastic. I definitely can see the effect of the increased budget, because it looks much more polished than even (the already excellent) season 2. There’s a few new characters here, as well as all your favorites – you can even catch a quick look at Dany’s dragons… they’re a bit bigger now. Watch the trailer below and see if you can make it until March 31st. It’s going be an incredible season. Read more…
HBO is loving Game of Thrones as much as its fans, and with good reason: the show is a cross-over hit. Season three begins on March 31, and like many people, they’re eager for anything with George R.R. Martin’s name on it. So it’s no surprise that Martin has signed a two-year deal with HBO to continue as co-executive producer on Game of Thrones. But that’s not all! Martin will also be developing and producing new shows for HBO. Read more…
Oh look, a three-eyed raver flying through the sky! Oh wait, that’s our world! Maybe this new season of Game of Thrones is going to be way different from what we expected. Or perhaps HBO is just creating a long and needless metaphor for their tagline. But maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “man I wish March 31st would be here sooner.” It’s what we’re all thinking, my friend. Certain events that will transpire in the third season are going to be so earth-shattering that even George R.R. Martin is considering going on a vacation around that time, without internet or phone. That’s how you know this is going to be good. Read more…
Here’s a quick link to start off your week: GQ recently had an interview with the people behind the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones season 2, “Blackwater.” George R.R. Martin, who wrote the script for that episode, features in it, along with the show’s creators, Dan Weiss and David Benioff. They also speak with Neil Marshall, the director of the episode, who was contacted a few days before work on the episode started for the job. Sounds crazy! There’s a lot of unique tidbits in the full interview, and it’s nice to see a look into the process behind filming, including how they begged HBO for another $2 million just for the “Blackwater” episode. Read the full article here.
For everything on the internet, there is a parody version. I’m pretty sure this is basically law now, so I suppose there is no surprise in the title: a Game of Thrones parody of Seinfeld. This might be offensive to some of you, given that the sitcom is the “lowest form of television,” and it’s being combined with some of the best. But joking aside, if you ever wanted to see how Game of Thrones would fare with a laugh track, now you know. Strangely, it feels more like I stepped into an alternate universe rather than a simple edit. Read more…
You may have heard that Game of Thrones episode Valar Morghulis won an Emmy for best special effects, done by Pixomondo. Ever wondered how they were done? The CGBro has posted a video featuring swipes at how Pixomondo built the world of the Seven Kingdoms, and how they made it seem so believable. And, of course, the dragons. Everyone wants to see more about the dragons. Must be hard working with invisible co-stars! Read more…
Need some way to let your anger out in between Game of Thrones seasons? Joffrey Baratheon has the wonderful honor of being one of the most disliked characters in the series, and possibly TV right now. 604Republic, as a result, has put up a humorous print of Joffrey, that you can use as target practice. This was floating around for a while as a joke online, but now you can finally own it for yourself! 604Republic also has a Direwolf Winter Lager poster which is also neat, but not quite as well- made as the Joffrey design. Check them out! Read more…
Playing cards are a dime-a-dozen, so you have to really stand out with cool artwork or designs to catch people’s attention. Jim Tuckwell did just that, with his excellent and stylish Game of Thrones-themed playing cards. He’s only just begun, with Ned Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, and Tyrion Lannister, but they look great so far. His plans include all four card suits, with Varys and Littlefinger as Jokers. I hope he finishes the whole set – because I’d like them! Click through to see the cards he’s done. Read more…
When designer Darrin Crescenzi got into A Song of Ice and Fire, aka Game of Thrones, he did what many of us did: look for awesome posters! Ok, maybe not many of us, but it’s what I did. Darrin found that there weren’t many compelling designs featuring the sigils of each house, so he made one himself – and it looks fantastic! It’s 18″ x 24″ with gold foil stamp, which gives it a little pop, and is available from his online store for $35. It’ll look right at home on your wall, and probably get a few Game of Thrones discussions going too! Read more…
Hype for Season 3 of Game of Thrones has been building slowly but surely, and one of the most-awaited casting announcements was who would play Mance Rayder, the King Beyond the Wall. Well the news finally broke: Ciarán Hinds will be tackling the role! He’s probably most well known for his work in the excellent TV series Rome, but he’s also been in films like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Munich, to name a few. I imagined Mance a bit younger, perhaps, but I have no doubt of Hinds’ talent – I think he’s an excellent choice. May 31st, 2013 can’t come soon enough. Read more…
How would you like to have Game of Thrones-favorite, Tyrion Lannister, as a statue for your desk or display case? Dark Horse will soon be releasing a 10-inch figure of “the Imp” on February 20th featuring Tyrion in his ‘battle pose’ as he leads the defense of King’s Landing. While it’s great to see a model of Tyrion, it still looks a little off in the face to me. Perhaps I’m just spoiled by Hot Toy’s face sculpting! Tyrion Lannister will retail for $199.99 and can be pre-ordered here. Read more…
Because the new cast members for the upcoming season 3 of the wildly popular HBO fantasy TV series are pretty much perfect (especially Paul Kane as Thoros of Myr and Dianna Rigg as Olenna Tyrell). SDCC also brought us news of the date for the start of the new season, which will be on March 31st. It seems so far away, but I’m sure it’ll be here before you know it.
Here’s an excellent little video to cap off your weekend: YouTube user Joel935M decided to do some rotoscoping in After Effects and combined two already awesome properties into one. Star Wars and Game of Thrones should go together pretty well, right? How about that fight from season 1 between Eddard Stark and Jaime Lannister? But now, they have lightsabers. I think that’s all that needs to be said. Hey Joel, you should try this with more scenes, or why not go the whole way and just give everyone in GoT lightsabers? One can dream!
Want to wear the proud lion of the Lannisters? Or maybe sport the sharps antlers of the Baratheons? Society6 user Vanadium has created some very bold designs made to look like sports team logos, but featuring the various houses from the series A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones). They’re nicely done and look excellent on the various shirts available – these will definitely stand out in any t-shirt collection! Check out all the designs on his page! Read more…
I think I echo most people’s sentiments when I say I hate political attack ads. However, these are just fantastic: Mother Jones Video on YouTube has created three short attacks ads that could’ve spawned from the Game of Thrones universe. One attacking Daenerys, one for Robb Stark, and one for Joffrey. There are minor spoilers for events in the second book/second season but nothing too deliberate. Watch the Joffery ad above, then check out Dany and Robb after the jump. Read more…
Ever wanted to sit on your own Iron Throne, from Game of Thrones? HBO knows you want to, and has made a life-size, fibreglass and resin throne just like the one in the show, for the low, low price of $30,000. It runs seven feet high and five and a half feet wide, so yes, it’s very life-size. Who would buy this though? Fans of the series with money to burn, I assume. Where would you even keep this? In your garage? Make a dedicated “throne room?” Oh, to have a house large enough for my own throne room – that’d be the life. If any of you readers picks one of these replicas up, let us know. Because I want to see where you will be keeping it. Read more…
I don’t think I need to say much more than the title already says. The incredibly important song from Game of Thrones, “The Rains of Castamere” will be featured in the second soundtrack for the show, releasing June 19th. However, it’s performed by one of my favorite bands, The National. Yeah, this is awesome, and the world is beautiful. I’m certainly still interested in the rest of the soundtrack, but this is just a perfect cherry on top. I’m glad The National has been so involved with “geeky” projects, like this and Portal 2. Mainly because we get great music out of it!
No, not literally stored on floppy drives – better than that. The Game of Thrones theme has been played on just about every instrument and object imaginable, but this is one of the most unique versions I’ve seen: floppy drives. MrSolidSnake745‘s excellent floppy drive musical renditions have been floating around the internet for quite a while, and as far as “pro floppy drive musicians” go, I’m pretty sure he’s the best. The rest of his songs are pretty well-done, and there’s something delightfully retro about hearing songs played on aging computer parts.
