Tarantino XX Blu-ray Box-Set is Packed Full of Violence

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 11, 2012 in Cinema

tarantino

Are you a big Quentin Tarantino fan? Big enough to re-buy all of his films on Blu-ray? Coming this November is Tarantino XX, an 8-film collection picked by Tarantino to illustrate the first 20 years of his career. The collection includes Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2, Jackie Brown, Death Proof, and True Romance. All great films, but I suspect many of you already own these films on Blu-ray (I know I do), so it depends on whether 5 hours of new special features is worth the entry price of $89.98 via Amazon. If you’re picking up, at least you’ll get a fantastic cover and box to hold all the films! Tarantino XX drops November 20th. Read more…

Latest Persona 4 Golden Trailer Shows Off New Features

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 10, 2012 in Videogames

Persona 4 Golden

Though it still doesn’t have the broad name recognition of Final Fantasy here in the US, Atlus’s Persona series has risen to prominence among gamers who have been searching for new, meaty games this generation, which has seen a dearth of quality JRPGs. While Persona 3 laid reinvented the series and proved popular, it was Persona 4 that exploded in popularity, leading to an anime and tons of spin-off material. Soon, Persona 4 will get a port for PlayStation Vita with lots of new content. Read more…

Gears Of War Movie Being Offered To New Film Studios

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 10, 2012 in Cinema, Videogames

Gears of War

Microsoft wants a Gears of War movie, and since the movie industry isn’t moving on it, they’re ready to try pushing it into production a different way. New Line Cinema has the movie rights to the franchise, but they’ve decided to focus on The Hobbit films, which are guaranteed to bring in tons of money. The studio has placed Gears of War in turnaround for another studio to pick up. The thing is, Creative Artists Agency, the reps for the film, don’t want to wait.

Since New Line doesn’t seem to care about the movie, CAA is more than happy to take the license and shop it around to other studios. The most recent version of the script was written by Stuart Beattie (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), a script which is likely to get referenced during negotiations.

I’m not sure why Microsoft isn’t pushing a Halo film harder though, considering that it would likely have a slightly broader appeal due to increased mainstream recognition and the potential to be targeted towards more than 18- to 35-year-old males with a penchant for extreme military violence. I like Gears of War, but I’m not entirely sure it needs to be realized on the big screen.

US Air Force Was Once Developing A Supersonic Flying Saucer

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 9, 2012 in Science, Tech

Flying Saucer

You know all those people who swear they saw a flying saucer or UFOs in the middle of the 20th century? Well, they could have actually been onto something, as the US government has just declassified documents that show that the Air Force was developing a flying saucer in 1956. “Project 1974” was intended to hover through the air at supersonic speeds. Wow! Read more…

Retro City Rampage Is A Love Letter To The NES

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 9, 2012 in Videogames

Retro City Rampage

There are lots of indie games out there making either conscious or subconscious references to games of yore. Part of that is because of the solid, pure design some of these iconic games featured, and part of that is because of affectionate nostalgia. But it’s not often that a retro-inspired game has been in development for so long that it could practically qualify for an “retro” game itself, and not just because it looks like an NES game on steroids. World of Warcraft Map Built Entirely in Minecraft, 1:1 Scale

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 8, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

IAXuD

Here’s something mighty impressive: how would you like to play in the World of Warcraft map, but rather than playing WoW itself, you can punch trees and ride pigs? Different strokes for different folks, right? Well Reddit user RamsesA used custom software he made to take the WoW map and convert it into a Minecraft map, and it’s kind of crazy. Once compiled, the map is roughly 24 gigs in size, which is larger than actually installing WoW itself. Then again, this is a WoW map you can customize and change according to your whims. Talk about insane (and cool)! Read more…

Halo 4 Short Film Series ‘Forward Unto Dawn’ Begins

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 8, 2012 in Videogames

halo4

With Halo 4 coming out this November, it’s time to get the marketing machine running, right? Well, with the success of previous Halo-themed short films, it’s no surprise that another one has been released. However, this new film, Forward Unto Dawn, is actually a series. This first part is nearly 20 minutes long, and it looks like we’ll be getting 5 parts total, leading up to when Halo 4 releases. While you can watch each segment as it comes out each week, it’ll also come complete in the Halo 4 Limited Edition. It’s a surprisingly solid film so far, making me wonder: why the heck don’t they finally just make a Halo TV series or movie? Read more…

Angry Birds x Star Wars? Rovio Teases Fans

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 7, 2012 in Videogames

angrybirds

Angry Birds is everywhere today. Games, toys, even a feature film is in the works. But at least we can say it hasn’t had a Star Wars crossover… until now. Rovio, the makers of the ever-popular bird-flinging iOS game, have begun teasing a new announcement on their official Tumblr and Twitter, telling fans to come to the Times Square Toys R Us on Mobday, October 8th, at 8am EST. Does this mean Star Wars-themed Angry Birds toys? Or perhaps there’s more involved – maybe an add-on to Angry Birds Space that features Wookies? As strange as this collaboration is, we won’t know for sure until Monday. Read more…

We had heard that Gearbox’s wildly-popular Borderlands 2 would be getting post-launch DLC before, a new character added to the game called the Mechromancer. This new character, Gaige, has a unique ability that lets her spawn a massive robot that’ll beat up your enemies for you, called DeathTrap. We now have the first official screenshot of the character, as well as a release date: October 16th. Read more…

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 6, 2012 in Videogames

ac3ds

If you’re a diehard fan of the Animal Crossing series, then you’re sure to be very excited by the recent Japanese Nintendo Direct video released online by the House of Mario. It’s a 47-minute long video promoting the new features of the upcoming 3DS version of the game, which arrives in Japan this November, and early 2013 here in the US. While it’s all in Japanese, NeoGAF member StreetsAhead (who is definitely streets ahead) has translated much of the video here. Some of the highlights are below the break. Read more…

Prometheus Blu-ray to Feature New Beginning and Ending

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 5, 2012 in Cinema

prometheus

Still confused by Prometheus? I enjoyed it, purely from an artist standpoint, but sadly felt that the story left much to be desired. Perhaps that’s the reason I’m excited for the Blu-ray release of Ridley Scott’s latest – deleted scenes and alternate beginning and ending clips might help make the story feel a bit more cohesive. But these new features on the disc, while neat, probably won’t fix everything. I did crack up at the dramatic music that started playing when the trailer mentions you can use your tablet with the film to see extra content. Read more…

Trailer for The Lone Ranger Fails to Impress

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 5, 2012 in Cinema

loneranger

Perhaps I’m just a jaded, empty, shell of a man, but when I first saw the news of Gore Verbinski tackling a remake of The Lone Ranger, I was skeptical. And now that the trailer is out, I have to say, my opinion hasn’t changed. The film stars Johnny Depp and some other guy (poor Armie Hammer, being upstaged by his co-star) with Helena Bonham Carter. Is she legally obligated to be in any film that features Depp? Is it some bizarre clause written into his contract? Is there some internal movie studio study that shows Helena and Johnny together increase movie revenue? I just don’t understand. Read more…

Featurette for Arrow TV Series Tries To Avoid Comic Connections

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 4, 2012 in Comic Books, Television

Arrow

Superheroes are big business in entertainment, even more so after the spectacular success of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises this year. It’s not that surprising that we’d see a comic book character adapted into a TV series, which is what the CW is doing with Arrow, a live-action take of Green Arrow. But just as comics are becoming more accepted in the mainstream, Arrow seems to be doing its best to distance itself from its origins, as shown in this three-minute featurette. Read more…

Kill Evil George Washington In Assassin’s Creed III’s Extra Campaign DLC

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 4, 2012 in Videogames

Evil George Washington

Fans of Assassin’s Creed are already familiar with alternate histories, considering the series features an ongoing secret war between Assassins and Templars, fighting over artifacts from an advanced earlier civilization. This fall’s Assassin’s Creed III will continue that war, resolving the storyline of modern-day assassin Desmond Miles while exploring his genetic memories of a new assassin ancestor, the Native American Connor Kenway in colonial America. Though the base game is enticing enough, one piece of future downloadable content may be too cool to pass up: killing evil George Washington. Read more…

Sony Adds A Slew of PS1 Games To PlayStation Vita Store

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 3, 2012 in Videogames

Final Fantasy VIII

Sony has taken its sweet time adding PS1 games to the PlayStation Vita digital store. In fact, there were no updates last week at all. Though technically every PS1 game on the PlayStation Network should be able to be played on PlayStation Vita, in practice some don’t work, and large amounts are still not listed on the Vita’s version of PSN. But this week, Sony is showing a lot of love to fans of old PS1 games. Click through for the long list! Read more…

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate To Receive High-Def Facelift

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 3, 2012 in Videogames

Monster Hunter 3

Monster Hunter may be very popular in Japan, but it hasn’t always gotten its due in the West. It has a loyal fanbase, but not every installment of the game has made it across the pond. So considering the fact that the Wii U’s Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is an upgraded version of the Wii’s Monster Hunter Tri, it’s cool that Capcom is still bringing it out in America. Cooler still? The game is getting some solid technical upgrades. Read more…

Buy Digital 3DS Games And Get A Rare Version Of Donkey Kong

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 2, 2012 in Videogames

Donkey Kong: Original Edition

What’s this, Nintendo is giving away a game if you buy some other games? The last time I got something from Nintendo in a deal like this was the Gamecube’s The Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition, back before Nintendo realized how much their old games were worth. While the game on offer isn’t anywhere near as awesome as Zelda, it is somewhat rarer, since it has never been released in America before. Read more…

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 1, 2012 in Design, Star Wars

sw_seuss

Dr. Seuss and Star Wars… who knew they could fit together so well? Jason Peltz, former Disney animator and freelance artist, made these awesome mashups featuring our favorite Star Wars characters as Dr. Seuss book covers, and they’re incredibly well done. He already had the featured pieces go up on Steal This Art a while ago, and the next one will show up October 4th, so pay attention to that site if you want a print for yourself! He also says the fifth piece is almost finished. Good stuff! Click through for more! Read more…

Sony Shutting Down PSP Comic Store

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 1, 2012 in Comic Books, Videogames

pspcomic

Perhaps I’m just out of the loop, but I must admit: I didn’t even know you could purchase comics on your PSP or Vita. The service will be shutting down October 30th, and anything you own on the service will be available to download until mid-January 2013 (licenses permitting). I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, you could download a huge variety of stuff on the PS Store. Still, it’s a little sad to see another option go, especially since a digital manga store is opening up for Vita owners in Japan around the same time this one closes! As usual, Japan gets everything cool. Read more…

Park Chan-Wook’s Stoker Arrives With its First Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 30, 2012 in Cinema

stoker

Did you know that Oldboy director Park Chan-Wook is making a film here in the US? And it stars Nicole Kidman and Mia Wasikowska? Well now you do. You know what else you should know? The first trailer for the film has come out, and lets just say this movie looks insane – in the best way possible. It tells the story of a girl named India who, after her father dies, learns of her Uncle Charlie. He comes to live with her mother, a lady who is a little off-kilter herself. India’s uncle seems increasingly suspect but to make matters worse she is also a little attracted to him. Seems like a Park Chan-Wook film through and through! Check out the trailer below. The Dark Knight Rises Blu-ray Arrives December 4th in Special Edition Box Set

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 30, 2012 in Cinema

dkr1

Did you like Christopher Nolan’s latest, The Dark Knight Rises? So did millions of others, I think I remember it did alright in the box office… Probably not a very big release, either way. Still, the Blu-ray is coming out December 4th, just in time for Christmas, so you can buy it for yourself and justify it a little easier. The special edition box set will include a bunch of extras, such as a documentary about the Batmobile, 17 featurettes about the making of the film, and a short on how they demolished an entire city street. Of course, most importantly, it comes with a broken Batman cowl, just like the one the film. No word on if it’ll fit on your face and shatter properly when a friend punches you. Read more…

LEGO Version of Foster the People’s Houdini Rocks Out!

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 29, 2012 in Fandom

fosterlego

YouTube user Insomniac has been making some amazing LEGO videos for a while now, but his latest music video featuring Foster the People and their song Houdini is probably my favorite. I’m really amazed at how much time he spent working on it, getting all the camera angles correct and making the lighting really work – it’s incredibly good. And fluid, too! Hopefully he’ll post a video on his site soon showing off the behind-the-scenes work done on it. Till then, click through the break to see an awesome music video featuring cute plastic yellow people jamming out. Read more…
