Ever wanted to be a commander of your own ship? The guys at Warballoon do, and that’s why they’re making Star Command, a new game for iOS, Android, PC, and Mac. They’ve posted a video recently, showing off them playing through a few missions in the game, managing their ship and battling against invaders. It has a cute artstyle, and reminds me a little bit of Game Dev Story. The game will apparently be coming out “when it kicks ass,” which seems to be a good indicator for any game’s development. Man, is it just me or are there way more space and spaceship sim games popping up suddenly? Read more…

Remember Olly Moss’ fantastic solo show, Paper Cuts? It featured a huge array of pop culture character in simple but iconic silhouette form. It got a lot of attention, and now it looks like all that has come to a head, as Moss is releasing a full book of the pieces, perfect for your coffee table. The book itself looks great, with an excellent design and hardcover. This looks to be a great conversation-starter or even a Christmas gift for a fanboy you know (or maybe just you). Being able to pick out each silhouette is fun, so pre-order it here on Amazon if you’re interested – it comes out October 30th. I’ve included a few examples from the original show below! Read more…

Batman vs. Superman is one of those match-ups that usually bug me. One of them is an extremely intelligent, paranoid sociopath, while the other is a nigh-invincible alien who can throw anything that bothers him into the sun. Writers will try to even the odds, since Batman is as big a name as Superman, but realistically, there’s no way that Superman wouldn’t just punch Batman to death before he could execute any of his plans. After months of teasing, Studio Khara has finally released a trailer with actual footage from Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo. This is the latest in the exciting Rebuild of Evangelion, the remake/reboot/possible-sequel (?) to the seminal deconstruction of mecha anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion. With the film coming out on November 17 in Japan, it’s good to know that actual footage exists, considering how long fans have been waiting for this movie! Read more…

Hellsing Ultimate, a new animated adaptation that adheres closer to the manga it is based on, has been running since 2006. There are currently nine episodes released as OVAs, but all good things must come to an end. On December 26, the tenth and final episode will be released in Japan, concluding the story. From the looks of the trailer below, it’s going to be an explosive finish, but what else would you expect from an anime about nazi vampires? Read more…

Though it has its detractors, I still think Burnout Paradise was one of the most fun racing games in recent memory. The team at Criterion has since been put to work on the upcoming Need for Speed: Most Wanted, incorporating an open-world in a similar fashion to Burnout Paradise. The game is out on October 30, so that means it’s time for trailers, including this awesome offering from YouTube superstar Freddie Wong. This is the most impressive car chase ever shot with remote control cars. Read more…

If you’re into classic old school animation you’ll want to be watching Turner Classic Movies this weekend. From 5pm until well after midnight animation historian Jerry Beck will be showing Max Fleischer’s Gulliver’s Travels (1939) , Max Fleischer’s Mr. Bug Goes To Town (1941), UPA’s Jolly Frolics , some silent animated films from NYC from back in the day and Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed.

Kickstarters are pretty much overdone now, right? What about a Kickstarter that doesn’t use Kickstarter? Chris Roberts, creator of Wing Commander, wants to create a new space sim called Star Citizen. So far he’s built an impressive tech demo to show where he wants the game to go: a seamless, realistic experience. Essentially, you can walk around a huge ship, hop in your smaller fighter, take off into space, and fly everywhere – with no loading screens. A high goal to hit, but the footage of the game so far looks fantastic. The best thing he mentions is being able to have multiple people pilot a ship, with you steering the craft, a buddy in the back manning the guns, and more. If this lives up to the promises made, this could be every sci-fi fanboy’s dream. Watch the video after the jump! Read more…

Excited for all these new Marvel movies? Now that all the build-up to Avengers is complete, we get to do it all again with Avengers 2. We have Guardians of the Galaxy peeking over the horizon, and Thor: The Dark World is scheduled for November 2013, but recently news has been dropping in regards to the Captain America sequel, The Winter Soldier. We found out that Black Widow will show up in the film a few weeks ago, but the role of the leading lady in the film has been up for grabs. Who’s on the list? You might be surprised. Read more…

I’m cautiously interested in the Wii U’s launch lineup: compared to most other console launches, it’s pretty darn good. A new Mario game, a solid lineup of third party games, and a Wii Sports-alike to attract the casual gamers. Ubisoft’s ZombiU, while having a terrible title, looks pretty interesting. They seem to have some neat gameplay with the Wii U’s gamepad, such as zooming in on the second screen to snipe, or managing your inventory – and zombies can attack you while you’re doing so! Granted, I’m a little zombie’d out right now, so I’m not sure how well it will go over, but as long as it’s not another Red Steel situation, I’m okay with it. Read more…

I think I can safely title this that, right? Carlyle Livingston and Wayne Hussey, two intrepid LEGO fans, took nearly 400 hours each over three months to build the most impressive Batcave I’ve ever seen. It has all the important details, and even the not-so-important details. All those angled bricks for the cave surface look amazing, and I love the little exits for the various Bat-vehicles. Carlyle and Wayne have been taking the Batcave around to various conventions, so you may have caught it at Brickcon or Emerald City ComiCon. Absolutely insane! Read more…

You may remember that awesome proof-of-concept trailer for The Goon way back at Comic-con 2010. If you were like me, you got excited about seeing such a cool comic coming alive on the big screen – but nothing ever materialized. The movie never got the funding it needed and was dropped. However, David Fincher, Eric Powell, and the gang at BLUR Studios really want to make this film. So they’re running a Kickstarter to finance the full-length story reel – aka, the rough edit of the storyboards. It’ll have music, sound effects, and the like, but be aware it’s not “making” the CGI film you’re supporting. Will that make Hollywood take another look at The Goon? I’m not sure, but you have to admire the sheer willpower of the creators! Read more…

With New York Comic-con in full swing, we’re getting some cool announcements out of the convention. One cool bit of news was LEGO’s announcement of a new license added to their already huge list: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Technically, it’s based off of the recent Nickelodeon version of the characters, but still! This is a great property and the minifigures look great, but that van is a little on the borish side. Hopefully we’ll see some neat sets come out. Best part: LEGO teased the announcement the day before by sending out LEGO pizza slices to press. If that’s not awesome, I don’t know what is. Read more…

Capcom has been giving Street Fighter a lot of love in the past few years, between rereleases like Street Fighter III, HD updates of Street Fighter II, and of course the much newer Street Fighter IV. But one of their other major fighting game franchises, Darkstalkers, hasn’t gotten much love, beyond characters appearing in games like Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Though rumors abound of a new Darkstalkers game, for now it seems like Capcom is testing the waters with an HD rerelease of early Darkstalkers games. Read more…

Though mainstream audiences may know the series as Battle of the Planets or G-Force, depending on how old they were when it was on the air, to old-school anime fans it has always been Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, or just Gatchaman. The adventures of the five-member team was widely popular the world over and spawned an additional OVA, as well as laying the foundation for franchises like Super Sentai, which was eventually adapted into Power Rangers for America. A movie had been planned by Imagi, but the company cancelled it in 2011. Now, there’s a new film project, coming this time from Japanese producer Nikkatsu. Read more…

You have to hand it to Disney, their marketing for Wreck-It Ralph, the upcoming CGI film set in the world of video games, is really fantastic. They’ve been running with the idea that Fix-It Felix has been a real game, from making an actual arcade game you can play, to an authentic-feeling “vintage” ad for the local Litwak Arcade. They did such a good job it makes me wonder if they actually transferred the video to a VHS tape at any point. Anyway, I hope this bodes well for Wreck-It Ralph, as it sure does seem like the creators have an honest love for old-school games. Read more…
