Be Mindful Of Falling Lances From Evangelion

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 27, 2012 in Anime

Lance 1

I love well-done marketing stunts, and since Evangelion is so big in Japan, it’s had its fair share over the years. The third Rebuild of Evangelion movie has been out for a bit, but that doesn’t mean they can’t put a giant Lance of Longinus in the ground at Tokyo Sky Tree Town. Read more…

Watch Out For Santa In Dark Souls

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 27, 2012 in Videogames

Evil Santa

You wouldn’t normally look for the spirit of Christmas to be expressed in Dark Souls, one of the most punishing, hardcore RPG experiences in recent memories. A major feature of the game involves the ability of players to invade each other’s games, practically endorsing griefing! But one man decided to dress up and play Santa for the good little boys and girls of Lordran. But for those on the naughty list…

Gerry Anderson: A Personal Fanboy Tribute

Posted by Michael Pinto on Dec 26, 2012 in Television

A 70s child holding an Eagle toy from Space:1999

Sadly my guess is that most fanboys under the age of 40 will never quite appreciate Gerry Anderson the way that I might, because I think his very best work was aimed at children. So if your childhood started after say 1975 this shows that he made wouldn’t quite have the same magical qualities. So for those of you who are too young even at age 40 let me take you back to back to the year 1975 when I was only ten years old: Read more…

Dragon Ball To Be Reprinted In Color

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 26, 2012 in Anime

Dragon Ball Z

Though it’s old hat by now, Dragon Ball (or for the portion that American fans like, Dragon Ball Z) is one of the biggest, most popular manga ever released in Japan. It’s always in print, with a new definitive version, but now a new version is finally adding something to make it even more palatable for anyone turned off by manga’s black-and-white style: color. A Stamp of Approval for Doctor Who

Posted by Michael Pinto on Dec 26, 2012 in Dr. Who

William Hartnell

The BBC reports that the Royal Mail will be releasing an official set of Doctor Who stamps to honor the the 50th anniversary of the show. This wonderful series features a stamp for each Doctor, and then a second class set of stamps will features the villains from the show including my favorite the Daleks. Shown below are the other first class Doctors: Read more…

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 Is A Weird Mix Of Old And New

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 26, 2012 in Anime, Videogames

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2

One Piece: Pirate Warriors could have used some more polished gameplay and it was pretty dumb, but it was also dumb fun. I had hoped for a sequel that would improve and hopefully add some major arcs that were previously skipped over. Now that One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 is coming out, it looks like Omega Force and Namco Bandai are doing that…sort of. Read more…

Celebrate Christmas With A New Look At The Nintendo 64

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 25, 2012 in Videogames

N64 Kid

Hopefully you all remember the viral video in which a hyperactive boy goes crazy with happiness after getting a Nintendo 64 for Christmas. (If not, it’s posted below.) The screaming is pretty nuts, but a recent video animates the event and reinterprets it in a particularly sinister light. I can think of no better video to post on Christmas morning. Happy holidays, everyone!

Pauline Is The Angel On This Donkey Kong Christmas Tree

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 25, 2012 in Videogames

Donkey Kong Christmas Tree small

You normally wouldn’t associate construction girders, rolling barrels, and giant apes with Christmas festivity. But consider the gaming enthusiast who doesn’t have room for a tree in their apartment. What are they going to decorate with? It’s probably a bit late to print it up, but ignoring that, this restructuring of Donkey Kong’s iconic first level would do the trick. Carlos Leituga finds the inherent Christmas-y aspect of jumping over barrels in a construction site. Just remember to pick up that purse and umbrella, Mario (neé Jumpman), I’m sure they’d make excellent presents for Pauline. Read more…

X-Men 1992 Cartoon Intro – in Stop-Motion

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 24, 2012 in Comic Books, Fandom

xmen

Have some nostalgia for the original X-Men cartoon? The delightfully 90s original opening has a certain charm to it, like so many older cartoons. Perhaps it’s just because we grew up with them, but no matter. Kyle Roberts and his buddies have put together a remake of the 1992 X-Men opening with action figures and drawn backgrounds, the heroes leaping into plastic-y action. I’d argue with their use of the word “stop-motion,” because some of this seems more Flash than stop-motion, but it’s still an impressive and fun video nonetheless. Watch it below the break! First Teaser for Hiroyuki Imaishi’s New Anime, Inferno Cop

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 24, 2012 in Anime

infernocop

And there’s barely any details… Hiroyuki Imaishi is one of my favorite Japanese animators, particularly for his work on Gurren Lagann, Panty & Stocking, Dead Leaves, and FLCL. But now that GAINAX has fallen apart, he’s gone his own way and formed a new studio called Studio Trigger with many of his old buddies from his last job. They have just released a short teaser for their first project, Inferno Cop – and there’s not too much to go on in the teaser. It’s set to debut on Christmas though, so I’m sure we’ll see more then. Along with Imaishi, Shigeto Koyama, Hiromi Wakabayashi, and Akira Amemiya are also working on this anime. It’s a pretty solid lineup, so I’m anxious to hear more details about this in the next few days! Read more…

The Song for Rain, An Adorable Short Film

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 23, 2012 in Animation

songforrain

I love seeing up-and-coming artists online. Seeing people with new styles, creative ideas – or something that’s just plain cute. Yawen Zheng created this short animated film called The Song for Rain for their graduation project, which features a young boy splashing about in the rain who discovers a friendly fox. The art style is really adorable, and I love the texture used throughout the piece. You’ll see the ending coming a mile away, but that won’t make you “aww” any less either. Walking Dead Renewed for a 4th Season, Glen Mazzara Leaving

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 23, 2012 in Television

twd

Hmm, now what do we have here? Just as the Walking Dead was getting good, Glen Mazzara decides to leave? AMC has announced that The Walking Dead will be renewed for a fourth season, but that Glen Mazzara will be leaving after season three. A telling quote was, “Both parties acknowledge that there is a difference of opinion about where the show should go moving forward and conclude that it is best to part ways,” which says to me that AMC is being stubborn again. LEGO CUUSOO Back to the Future Set Approved!

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 22, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

bttf1

Have you seen this amazing Back to the Future LEGO set? No? Well look at it, take it all in. It looks amazing. And the submission on LEGO’s CUUSOO web page had gotten enough votes by the public to be considered by LEGO for an official set. And guess what? It was approved! LEGO got the necessary rights with Universal Studios and the DeLorean will be coming out in the near future. There’s not a final model yet, so the end result might look a bit different from these pictures. But still: a LEGO Back to the Future set. Awesome! LEGO also mentions they’re next looking at the Mars Curiosity Rover, UCS Sandcrawler, and Portal 2 LEGO CUUSOO projects. I would kill for some Portal LEGO sets, so I’m rooting for that one! Check out more images and the video below. Read more…

Humble Indie Bundle 7 – Now With More!

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 22, 2012 in Videogames

HIB7

Humble Indie Bundle is one of the coolest things coming out of the industry, in my opinion. It’s a cheap way to get great games, and it supports charity in the process. Pay what you want for 5 items, or pay above the average for 2 more games! What you get this year is Snapshot, The Binding of Isaac, Closure, Indie Game: The Movie, and Shank 2. Pay above the average, and you get Dungeon Defenders and Legend of Grimrock. And that’s not even including the bonus soundtracks. Like I said, it’s a great deal, and you’ll be supporting Child’s Play and the EFF! You can also adjust the donation percentages, so you can give more to charity or the developers! Check it out here.

Steam Holiday Sale Begins!

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 21, 2012 in Videogames

steamsale

It’s one of the best times of the year! Your family comes close, you share gifts with each other, maybe a cup of hot cocoa, and you hover your browser on the Steam web page mashing the F5 button to see new daily deals. Valve has started up the latest Steam Sale, and there’s some great deals going around. Scribblenauts, Hitman, Borderlands, and more are on sale for 50% to 75% off, and that’s only the first day. Flash deals are also still a feature, although Valve seems to have thankfully extended the time limit on many of them. The sale runs until January 5th, so keep checking back for more deals. Also, don’t forget to also watch Amazon for some competing sales as well!

Reggie Asks: Nintendo TVii

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 21, 2012 in Videogames

thats_great

You may know that the president of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, frequently does in-depth developer interviews called “Iwata Asks.” They’re really great looks into the development process at Nintendo and you get to read lots of crazy stories about what happened while they were making the game, system, or service. Iwata’s joviality comes through with the often written “Iwata: [laughs]” in the interviews, so much so it has become a bit of an internet meme. Now, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is getting in on the asking business too, with the launch of Nintendo TVii, which just arrived. Read more…

Shout Dramatically With InuYasha Blu-ray Movie Collection

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 20, 2012 in Anime

InuYasha

Man, I remember loving InuYasha back in early high school. It was a great premise with colorful characters and lots of action (or at least that’s how I felt at the time). Then all the plot beats started looping, which made it feel like the characters and plot were going nowhere, and by the time it picked up again, my tastes had matured too much to stand the expository dialogue and mounds of wretched filler episodes. Maybe that’s why we have the movies! Read more…

THQ Files For Bankruptcy, Major Games Still Coming

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 20, 2012 in Videogames

Saints Row The Third

It’s been a rough year for THQ, and though the recent Humble THQ Bundle raised some good money for the publisher, it seemed inevitable. THQ has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Deleware, entering an Asset Purchase Agreement with Clearlake Capital Group to transfer ownership of all of their assets, including all games in development and their four owned studios. Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 19, 2012 in Videogames

Soul Hackers

We knew that Atlus was making an updated port of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, a spin-off of their massive Shin Megami Tensei franchise that includes the cult favorite Persona. However, there was no previous indication that the game would make its way west. Thankfully, Atlus is pulling through, announcing to their Atlus Faithful email subscribers that Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers will be released in North America come Spring 2013. What Glitches Would Look Like In Real Life

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 19, 2012 in Videogames

Crazy glitch

Corridor Digital whipped up this nifty video of what common game glitches look like when they interact with real people (or at least real people pretending to be game characters). You’ve got classics like “item stuck in floor,” “character teleporting in weird ways,” and “OH GOD MY FACE IS MELTING.” Give it a watch, and feel the memories of Bethesda games come flowing back to you. Oh Bethesda, your worlds are so expansive and life-like, and yet so utterly rooted in silly videogame nonsense.

Celebrate Mega Man’s 25th Anniversary With Street Fighter X Mega Man

Street Fighter X Mega Man

Fans of the Blue Bomber haven’t had the best luck lately. With Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe getting canceled, and a lazy mash-up game called Mega Man Xover being released on iOS, the fans need some loving. Capcom is finally throwing them a bone by not only allowing but assisting in a fan-made PC game called Street Fighter X Mega Man, where Mega Man fights through new levels to battle 8-bit versions of Street Fighter characters. Artist Finally Resumes Work On Black Lagoon Manga

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 18, 2012 in Anime

Black Lagoon

If you haven’t seen Black Lagoon, an anime from 2006, let me bottom-line it for you: it’s a loving take on American action films and Western tones, as well as directors such as Quentin Tarantino and John Woo. It sounds like that would result in a parody, but it feels like an excellent homage, telling the story of a multicultural group of mercenaries and the people they meet in the criminal underground of Southeast Asia. The manga has been running since 2002, with most of it adapted in anime form, but has been on hiatus since 2010. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait much longer for more! Read more…

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Trailer – Oh, It’s Back

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 17, 2012 in Cinema

gijoe

Remember G.I. Joe: Retaliation? It looked like a much better, or at least more entertaining, G.I. Joe movie, and it was supposed to come out this past summer – until it was inexplicably delayed until March 2013. Rumors swirled about new scenes with Channing Tatum being added, or editing the film for a 3D release too (which it now has), and who knows how true those are, aside from the obvious 3D. Still, this new trailer seems to indicate the film is back on track despite its rocky production and looks to still be solidly entertaining – and not horribly embarrassing. Watch the trailer below.
