Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 21, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

Ant Man

Remember last summer’s San Diego Comic Con, when there was test footage shown from Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man film? Well, it’s finally leaked out online. Granted, it’s shot from a balcony and some guy’s head is in the shot, but you can still see a dude shrinking, getting bigger, and taking out two other dudes. Read more…

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 20, 2013 in Videogames

Shin Megami Tensei IV

The next mainline Shin Megami Tensei game comes out for 3DS in Japan on May 23. Shin Megami Tensei IV continues the series tradition of mixing demons, the occult, and modern day Japan. Atlus has put out a five-minute trailer showing tons of footage. Interestingly enough, there’s a shot of a Demonica armor suit, which appeared in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey on DS, once considered to be SMT IV before this new game was announced. Final Fantasy X HD To Include FFX-2 On PS3

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 20, 2013 in Videogames

Final Fantasy X-2

You can’t fault gamers for expecting Final Fantasy X HD to be out by now. First announced at TGS 2011, the HD update to the PS2’s first Final Fantasy game seemed like something that wouldn’t take too long to push out. We didn’t know if it would be an extensive retexturing with numerous fine-tuning like with the Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection or a cheap-and-dirty rerelease a la Capcom’s HD reissues, but either way, it should have been out in 2012. However, all we’ve seen so far is a few HD models, with the promise of a 2013 release. Read more…

Pikachu 3DS XL Arrives in the US

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Videogames

pikachu

It’s true! That rare and elusive Pikachu 3DS XL from Japan will be making its way overseas, arriving on March 24th. So yes, now you can get your hands on this bright-yellow, electrified 3DS. Given that it’s coming out next week, it’s a bit surprising that Target will have it on sale for $159.99, but it will a limited edition. No news on how “limited” that will be, though. I would recommend getting it though, if you want it, because who knows how long it’ll be around. Click here to see it in the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon commercial, or more images on the Pokemon site here. Read more…

Mickey Mouse is Back in New Animated Shorts

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2013 in Animation

mickey

Wondered where Mickey Mouse has been all these years? His animated adventures have been few and far between, but it seems Disney is finally letting him back out again. Disney Animation has teamed up with Paul Rudd (Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory), to create 19 new animated shorts featuring the rambunctious mouse. The first, Croissant de Triomphe, is already available online for you to watch, and the rest will be trickling out onto the Disney Channel starting June 28th. I love how the art looks, and I can’t wait to see more of these films because this first one is fantastic! Check it out below. Read more…

iOS Game Alert: Ridiculous Fishing

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 17, 2013 in Videogames

ridiculousfishing

There’s been a recent iOS game making, ahem, waves, in the gaming community, called Ridiculous Fishing. It’s a great combination of solid mechanics and beautiful art, and under the guise of a simple fishing game, it turns into a surprisingly clever and addictive blast of entertainment. After dropping your lure down, you try to gather as many fish as possible on the way back up, and then blast all of them out of the air with your various guns and weapons. It’s also had quite a storied history involving drama, rip-offs, and the complexities of clone games on the App Store. But this one is the real deal, and oh so much better. Even the soundtrack is great! Check out the trailer below and get the app here! Read more…

St7i561

Yes, you read that right. There’s going to be crossover DLC between Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil 6. First up, Capcom will be adding in the four main characters from L4D2, Coach, Rochelle, Ellis, and Nick, as playable characters in an exclusive new mode called The Mercenaries No Mercy. Each character will have a specific loadout to use, and the Witch and Tank will also make an appearance. This will arrive April 5th. On the L4D2 side, three new special infected will be added via the Steam Workshop: Lepotitsa, Napad, and Ogroman. This has a more nebulous release date of “Spring.” Valve Time activate! Read more…

Saints Row IV Announced

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 16, 2013 in Videogames

sr4

Are you ready to jump back into the world of Saints Row? After some uncertain times with THQ (goodnight, sweet prince), Volition has returned as “Deep Silver Volition” and have taken DLC planned for Saints Row 3 and turned it into a fully-fledged new game. The new title focuses on an alien threat, as the leader of the Saints (also the newly-elected President of the United States) gains superpowers and fights back. Yeah, looks like Saints Row to me! Hopefully this game will turn out alright, given the challenges those developers have had recently. Check out the trailer below! Read more…

Jurassic Park 4 Gets a Director

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 16, 2013 in Cinema

jp4

Universal and Steven Spielberg are continuing to press forward on creating a fourth Jurassic Park film! And while they have a script from Rise of the Planet of the Apes writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, they hadn’t yet picked out a director. But now it looks like they’re going with a fresh face out of Sundance, in Colin Trevorrow, director of Safety Not Guaranteed. It’s an interesting choice to say the least, and one I’m not sure of, but Jurassic Park is Spielberg’s baby, so I bet that he saw something in Trevorrow’s work that he thought would be a good fit. Then again, you can argue about even having a Jurassic Park 4. How will it turn out? Read more…

Bioshock Infinite, False Shepherds and Combat

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 15, 2013 in Videogames

bioshock

A new trailer has shown up for Bioshock Infinite, along with a neat new look at the combat mechanics via IGN. The trailer seems to give a bit of a deeper look into the story and plotting of the game, so if you’re holding out to keep yourself completely unspoiled, you might want to avoid this one. However, the IGN combat video is really informative, and if you’re looking for more details on how the game plays, it’s a good, in-depth look. Although, I have to wonder about Booker: he finds a strange bottle lying around and just drinks it? Clearly, all strange bottles give you magical powers. Check out the videos below. Read more…

It seems a lot of you out there are still hardcore Veronica Mars fans. On March 13th Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell posted a Kickstarter for a Veronica Mars movie – with the blessing of Warner Bros. too. By the time 24 hours was up, all 2 million dollars that they asked for had been fulfilled. In case you’re wondering, yes, all the rewards are insane, and whoever paid $10,000 to be a waiter in one scene with one line… well, god speed. I hope it’s worth it. Check out their promotional trailer for the Kickstarter below, and if you still want to contribute, click here to head to their page. Read more…

Capcom Releasing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen Expansion

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 14, 2013 in Videogames

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen

Dragon’s Dogma did better than Capcom expected it to, being released to favorable reviews and sales figures. Naturally, being a success these days usually translates to more content. There have been a few smaller packs of downloadable content, but now Capcom is rereleasing the game as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. Read more…

Kick-Ass 2 Promises Tons Of Vigilante Superheroes

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 14, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

Kick-Ass 2

Well this is a pleasant surprise, kind of just like the first film. MTV premiered a trailer for Kick-Ass 2, the sequel to 2010’s adaptation of Mark Miller’s comic. And it’s looking pretty nice! Everyone seems spirited, and Jim Carrey’s inclusion doesn’t seem too forced. My only concern is that it is directed by some no-name instead of the talented Matthew Vaughn, who is only producing this time around. Still, it may turn out good. Check out the trailer below, but be warned it’s a red band trailer full of naughty words that are potentially NSFW. Read more…

Take On The ‘Year Of The Snake’ In Sleeping Dogs Today

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 13, 2013 in Videogames

Sleeping Dogs: Year of the Snake

I know that Sleeping Dogs, Square Enix’s open-world romp through the grimy streets of Hong Kong, only came out about half a year ago, but it seems like it has been longer. That’s why I’m always surprised when more downloadable content is released for the game. A new DLC offering, “Year of the Snake,” comes out today, and it has protagonist Wei Shen continuing his cop duties in a less undercover manner. Read more…

A Wonderfully Out-Of-Context Preview Of Venture Bros. Season Five

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 13, 2013 in Animation

The Venture Bros.

Yes, May 19 is right around the corner, and that means that it’s almost time for season five of The Venture Bros. And since it’s almost upon us, Adult Swim has released a nearly five-minute-long trailer previewing what we can expect. As is to be expected from the mix of 60s cartoons, supervillains, comics, super science, and tons of other geeky elements that make up the show, the trailer makes no sense whatsoever, serving only to entice fans further. Pandora’s Tower Trailer Details Girl-Monster Romance

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 12, 2013 in Videogames

Pandora's Tower

After Nintendo was silent on Western releases for three major RPGs for its ailing Wii system, fans got together and complained loud enough (Operation Rainfall) for them all to get released. Sure, Nintendo claimed it was already planning on publishing Xenoblade Chronicles, and XSEED had to pick up the publishing slack for The Last Story, but at least they were released. This April, XSEED is publishing the third of the missing RPGs and probably the last worthwhile Wii game, Pandora’s Tower.

Nintendo Creating Animated 3DS Shorts To Promote Pikmin 3

Posted by Bob Muir on Mar 12, 2013 in Animation, Videogames

Pikmin 3

It has been a dry post-launch period for Wii U owners, with not a whole lot coming out. In hindsight, it’s almost good that Pikmin 3 got delayed until early this year, since at least there will be a must-buy game coming out for those desperate for new games. But before then, Nintendo has a small side-project to share: short Pikmin cartoons.

Or maybe you’re just looking for a quick recap to refresh your memory of all 200 characters? HBO has you covered. They’ve released an almost 15-minute recap of season 2, mixed in with some interviews and staff discussions. This will hopefully keep you occupied for a short while. But thankfully the wait is almost over, as the third season will start March 31st. It’s sure to be the most exciting season yet, and I say that as someone who has read the books. So I’ll stop taunting you – watch the video after the break. Read more…

Next Borderlands 2 DLC to Include New Playable Character

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 11, 2013 in Videogames

bl2

Gearbox has been having a rough time recently, due to all the hubbub around Aliens: Colonial Marines. Personally, I’m not sure yet how everything played out, but it does make me hesitant to support them. Borderlands 2 is incredibly fun, and I want to keep playing more games like it, so hopefully Gearbox make things right. At SXSW Interactive, they debuted a short teaser trailer, showing off a very shadowy character – a new melee-focused Vault Hunter that you’ll be able to play as in the next DLC. There have been rumors of the level cap being raised as well, but don’t hold your breath – Randy Pitchford has repeatedly said it’d be very difficult to execute. For now, check out the teaser below! LEGO Bionicle Models Play Music for Your Entertainment

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

legoband

YouTube user Opificio Sonico put together a really cool video recently, showing off his LEGO Bionicle models that are hooked up to a collection of motors and an Arduino Uno board. Their purpose? To help create some pretty awesome music. Partnered with the Clavia Nordbeat app for iPad, the models tap out the rhythms delivered via electronic signal. It’s a pretty neat usage of the larger LEGO Technic models and gives the impression of a little band jamming away on the desk. I fully anticipate LEGOs to be making all of our music in the future. A Fresh Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2013 in Cinema, Star Trek

startrekID

I doubt this needs much introduction at this point: here’s the latest Star Trek Into Darkness trailer that’s running in front of Oz the Great and Powerful. It looks fantastic, and they’re still keeping Benedict Cumberbatch and his definitely not known, so very secret character to the background. He certainly looks imposing and threatening for the 5 seconds he’s in the trailer, though. It also looks like there will be plenty of falling in this film. Very very fast falling. From space. I must also say, I love the visual look of the first scene shown – I can’t wait to see that on the big screen. Check out the trailer below. Read more…

New After Earth Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 9, 2013 in Cinema

after_earth

So I haven’t seen much hype for After Earth, and I can understand why. Let’s just say that post-Airbender, M. Night Shyamalan does not have much cred. I remember seeing Inception in theaters and when the trailer for Devil mentioned that it was produced by Shyamalan, the theater burst into laughter. I’m being honest here. But I’m willing to give him another chance, as some parts of his latest film, After Earth, do look interesting. I think going with a simpler story about a father and son is a good start, and having a script by Gary Whitta is a great booster. Hopefully the film won’t become an overblown tale about saving the Earth, and instead just focus on the relationship between Will Smith and his son – then I think people might start paying attention.
