The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Posters Tease Next Trailer

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 4, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 posters

There are blurry posters and trailers out there for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, so it makes sense that Sony is putting out the official posters and trailers this week. That image up above is all three posters, showing off Rhino, the Green Goblin, and Electro; click the image to check it out full-res, because they do look great. The trailer is coming out Thursday, so that’s something for fans to look forward to. In the meantime, Sony also released four stills of the movie. Check them out below while you wait for the trailer. Still, I doubt this movie will be as good as the original Spider-Man 2. Read more…

Nintendo Puts Out A Mario & Luigi 3DS XL

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 3, 2013 in Videogames

Mario & Luigi 3DS XL

2013 is almost over, but it’s apparently not too late for one last celebration of “The Year of Luigi.” Not content with putting out a bunch of other limited edition 3DS XL systems this year, Nintendo has just released a Mario & Luigi 3DS XL. Besides a snazzy silver and gray color scheme, the case features the Mario Brothers. The system comes bundled with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, which of course is pre-installed because Nintendo seems to have abandoned giving out cartridges that could be traded away. Read more…

Posted by Bob Muir on Dec 3, 2013 in Anime

Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo

Well, that was quick. Now we have a list of which US theaters are showing Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, the third Rebuild of Evangelion film, this coming January. There are over 45 theaters to choose from, with a good spread of states. Of course, as with all limited releases, some people are going to be left out. Luckily for them, the Blu-ray and DVD release has been given a release date of February 18, 2014, something that I somehow missed completely. So if you can’t make it to one of the screenings below, you can go order the movie on Amazon right now! Read more…

Superfight! Makes Improbable Heroes and Villains Clash

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 2, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

superfight

Here’s a cool new card game I recently heard about: Superfight! The basic gist is as follows: a white card is drawn featuring the villain (Nickleback) and two weaknesses and powers (can clone self and wall-crawler). Then, you make a hero from your cards, and then argue to see who’ll win! The judge then picks their winner out of the various heroes and you begin again. It seems like a unique twist on the Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity style of card game, and it already features a bunch of expansion packs with extra cards. Check out the trailer below or order it online here! Read more…

Lil’ Guardian Pyro and Other Saxxy Award Winners

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 2, 2013 in Videogames

pyro

Well, Valve’s Saxxy Awards are over! All the votes have been tallied and the winner is… Lil’ Guardian Pyro! It’s an adorable short film feature a Pyro doll defending a sentry from a Spy doll. It’s really well done, but so were most of the nominees this year. Valve’s Saxxy Awards always bring out the best Source Filmmaker artists, directors, and animators out there, so be sure to browse the full site and watch them all. I really enjoyed Disruption, Crackpot, and Chinatown Getaway as well as the overall winner. Check it out below. Read more…

Rumor: EA Working on Open-World Star Wars Game?

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 1, 2013 in Star Wars, Videogames

original

According to job postings on EA Canada’s Vancouver studio, it seems like the company is working on an open-world Star Wars game. This is obviously super-early, but I wonder if there’s anything that could be salvaged from the open-world game Lucasarts was supposedly working on before they shut down. EA signed a 10-year deal with Disney and Lucasfilm, so they’ve got exclusive rights to make Star Wars games right now, so you’d better believe they’re going to milk it for all it’s worth. Hopefully we’ll hear some more details about EA’s plans in the next year. Read more…

A Winter Version of Animal Crossing’s Isabelle Comes to Visit

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 1, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

32886-1012

The previous Nendoroid of Isabelle from Animal Crossing was so popular (and so adorable) that they’re bringing another one out, in her winter outfit! It includes a new “smug” face, star-shaped effects, “hands on hips” arms,  and arms in a stretched out pose. Apparently, it also comes with these new arms in “summer” versions, so if you own the existing Isabelle Nendoroid, you can spiff her up too. She’s available for pre-order now, but won’t arrive until April next year. You can pre-order her on AmiAmi, HLJ, Hobby Search, or CD Japan. More images below! Read more…

Amazing Judge Dredd Cosplay is Part Make-up, Part Costume, All Awesome

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 30, 2013 in Comic Books, Fandom

dredd

What does into making a really good cosplay? A costume you’ve slaved over making? Finding the right tool or piece to bring it altogether? What about some make-up and latex prosthetics? If you’re going to make your lower jaw look like Judge Dredd’s lower jaw… then go all the way, like these guys did. It’s an amazing combination of latex and clever make-up that eerily replicates the distinctive shape of Dredd’s face. Combine that with a pitch-perfect helmet and the rest of the costume, and you’ve got one of the best Judge Dredd costume’s I’ve ever seen. I’ve included a video below of the process behind making it. New Amazing Spider-Man 2 Poster Reveals Villains

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 30, 2013 in Cinema, Comic Books

kz26gAX

We’ve known about Electro being in Amazing Spider-Man 2 for a while now, and we’ve seen set photos of The Rhino, but one other certain villain that might show up in the film has popped up on a new poster. If you’ve been paying attention to various reports, leaks, and set photos it’s not too big of a surprise, but I wasn’t sure they’d really bring a third villain into the film. Hopefully it can avoid the mess that was Spider-Man 3! If you don’t want the third villain spoiled for you, don’t click through. Otherwise, bombs away! Read more…

Some Celebrities Wish You A Happy Thanksgiving

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 29, 2013 in Cinema

BaMVJUBIcAAucld

Not just ANY celebrities though: Sir Patrick Stewart  and Sir Ian McKellen, two of the the coolest buddies ever, are the ones wishing you a happy Thanksgiving. Yeah, yeah, it’s Friday now. I don’t care. You need to see this picture, because it’s adorable. Also, Gary Oldman also wants to wish you a happy Thanksgiving, but he’s a bit more profane… and violent about it. He seems a bit frustrated over the whole thing anyway, so I’m sure once he gets it out of his system he’ll be fine. Check out his rampage below the jump. Read more…

Cats Don’t Necessarily Like Super Mario 3D World

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 28, 2013 in Videogames

Cat Mario

One of the major new feature of Super Mario 3D World (besides it being the first must-play Mario game since Super Mario Galaxy) is the Cat Suit, which provides lots of mobility and new abilities, as well as making whoever wears it completely adorable. Mega64 brainstormed and realized that if Cat Mario loves jumping around his candy-coated world, maybe real cats would too! Hence this video, in which cats prove that they are not going to play along with your Mario fantasies. Now if only Mega64 would put out more videos like they used to, because I can’t remember how long it’s been since their last one. Read more…

Why Are There Aliens And Monsters In This New Tarzan Movie?

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 28, 2013 in Animation, Cinema

Tarzan

Everyone knows Tarzan, Edgar Rice Burroughs’s story of a boy who was raised by apes. As usual, Hollywood is running out of things to remake and reboot, so Constantin Films is dipping even further back for another Tarzan movie. It’s a CGI motion-capture animated film, and god do the faces look creepy. But more importantly is the new subplot of why modern man is going into the jungle and meeting Tarzan. Instead of hunting for gorillas, they’re hunting for a mysterious power source left behind by aliens many years ago. As if that wasn’t enough, you can also see Tarzan fighting some sort of tentacle monster in the film. Read more…

Ys: Memories of Celceta Is Now Out For Vita

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 27, 2013 in Videogames

Ys: Memories of Celceta

While everyone is getting excited about the start of a new console generation, it’s easy for smaller, niche games to get lost in the holiday madness. So allow me to draw your attention to Ys: Memories of Celceta, a JRPG for PlayStation Vita that just launched. Ys is a long-running series from Nihon Falcom that has been on tons of platforms, including many obscure Japanese computer systems. XSEED did everyone a solid and localized several PSP remakes and sequels in recent years, including the wonderful Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Memories of Celceta is a 25th anniversary celebration for the series, and it’s looking great. Read more…

Naruto Gets Ready To Enter ‘Final Phase’

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 27, 2013 in Anime, Comic Books

Naruto

It looks like the Naruto manga is getting close to ending. Author Masashi Kishimoto recently gave a message to TV Tokyo’s Sakiyomi Jan Bang!, which often covers manga from Weekly Shonen Jump and its related magazines. In that message, Kishimoto implied things were getting close to the end, though he didn’t say exactly how much longer things would last. Fair warning, there are spoilers in his message, especially if you only watch Naruto Shippuden, which is further behind in the story than the manga. Read more…

Here Are Nintendo’s Black Friday Deals

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 26, 2013 in Videogames

3DS bundle

I’m still steaming because my Xbox One was broken out of the box (though my PS4 works great!), so let’s talk about what’s currently the best system out there: the Nintendo 3DS. Yes, what was once seen as a sign that Nintendo was doomed has made a major comeback over the last two years, with a library of must-play games that the PS4 and Xbox One won’t have for a year or two. (Let’s hope Nintendo can repeat that success with the Wii U, which is finally getting amazing games like Super Mario 3D World.) What’s that, you don’t have a 3DS yet? I wouldn’t admonish you if this were 2011, but it’s something you now need if you’re a gamer. Luckily for you, there are several Black Friday deals highlighted by Nintendo themselves in a recent press release. Read more…

Lego Hobbit Game Is Ready To Milk The Franchise More

Posted by Bob Muir on Nov 26, 2013 in Cinema, Videogames

Lego The Hobbit

Normally, I’d approve of more Lego videogames. It’s practically impossible to keep up with them all, but Traveller’s Tales makes solid games that aren’t just for kids. But the latest announcement out of Warner Brothers seems like one step too far because of the franchise it’s adapting. Lego The Hobbit will be out in Spring 2014 for (deep breath) PS4, Xbox One, PC/Mac, Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, Vita, and 3DS. That all sounds good, but the problem is what’s actually in the game. Because it’s coming out before the third installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit film trilogy, it will only include 2/3 of the story from the book. As if the book wasn’t being milked enough by being split into three movies, even the game can’t cover everything. Is Warner Brothers concerned about spoilers for a 75-year-old book? Read more…

Watch An Aurora Borealis From the Comfort of Home

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 25, 2013 in Science

borealis

Not everyone will be able to see an aurora borealis this easily in real life, but thanks to photographer Göran Strand you can view it in your browser anytime you want. Strand used a Nikon D3s to shoot over 2400 images with a spherical lense and then merged them together into a timelapse. Put together in a browser, you can spin the view around and catch every detail in a 360 degree panorama. It’s really impressive work. I’d love to see more of this kind of thing, where people take nature and landmarks not everyone can visit and make them freely available online. And once the technology improves enough, can you imagine looking at this stuff through an Oculus Rift? I bet it’d be stunning. Click here to visit the web page or watch the video below. Read more…

Atlus Announces Persona Q, Persona 4: Dancing All Night, Persona 5, and More

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 25, 2013 in Videogames

uORXpYm

It was a buffet of Persona news as Atlus announced Persona games for everything. Ever. First up, they announced the much anticipated Persona 5 for PS3 next holiday. No other details aside from the announcement itself came out, though. Persona 4: Dancing All Night, on the other hand, is an unexpected Persona dancing game for PS Vita. Then Atlus also revealed Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth on 3DS, a dungeon crawler directed by Daisuke Kaneda (Etrian Odyssey 4). Lastly, they also listed a sequel to their Persona 4 fighting game spinoff, called Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold for PS3, which will arrive Summer 2014. Whew! Talk about a lot of Persona! id Software Founder John Carmack Leaves

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 24, 2013 in Videogames

johnc

An era is over! John Carmack, one of the original founders of id Software, who was the lead programmer and helped create many iconic video games such as Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake, has officially left that company. This is not particularly surprising, as in August he stepped down into a more distance supervisor role and join Oculus VR as their CTO. This was just the final step, as now he has changed his focus from games to hardware. It sounds like he finds the possibilities of the Oculus Rift very exciting (as do I) and wants to devote his full time to it. It’ll be interesting to see where id Software goes from here, as they haven’t really put out anything exciting in the past several years. Carmack will certainly find success wherever he goes, though! Google Celebrates Doctor Who’s 50th Anniversary

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 24, 2013 in Dr. Who

drwho2

Everyone is celebrating Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary… even Google! The search engine’s latest Google Doodle is a retro-styled game that takes place in their header and lets you play as any of the various Doctors. You can click to move your character around the screen, solve simple puzzles, avoid Daleks, and collect all the letters of the Google logo (obviously). It’s nothing too complex, but like most Google Doodles, it’s a heartfelt and creative little diversion. Check it out on Google’s homepage, or if you’re looking at this page in the far future and have missed it, hope over to Google’s Doodle archive where it should be archived. Read more…

Fox Searchlight Working on J.R.R. Tolkien Biopic

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 23, 2013 in Cinema

J R R Tolkien

Perhaps coming off the wave of The Hobbit’s refreshed popularity, someone finally decided to tackle a story that hadn’t been done yet. Fox Searchlight has begun working on a J.R.R. Tolkien biopic. Fox has put David Gleeson on the case to write a script and Peter Chernin will produce. It seems odd that we haven’t gotten one yet, but I’d be interested in the direction they take it. It sounds like it will focus a lot on Tolkien’s experiences in World War I, which has the potential for some really exciting stuff. Though, the real question is: who should play the author? I’m trying to think of good actors that resemble Tolkien, but none are coming to mind. I wonder! Read more…

Rumor: Telltale Developing Game of Thrones Video Game

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 23, 2013 in Videogames

got

We haven’t had too much luck with video games based off of the Game of Thrones series. The last one was pretty lackluster and didn’t really do anything interesting. However, our luck might be about to change: IGN is running that they’ve heard from multiple sources that Telltale Games (the makers of the famed Walking Dead games) have gotten the license to Game of Thrones. IGN admits that they’re not sure whether the license is for the books or the TV show, though, and having the rights to the HBO version would allow them to use the likenesses of the characters, presumably. However, it could also tell a story that avoids any characters from the books, too. There’s a lot of possibilities here, so I hope we hear something soon. Read more…

Latest Team Fortress 2 Update Adds New Weapon Effects, Maps, and More

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 22, 2013 in Videogames

tf2

Team Fortress 2, despite releasing just over six years ago, is still going strong. A committed player base and continuous updates from Valve adding new items, weapons, and maps have made it the (in my opinion) best free-to-play shooter on the market. Oh, and yes, hats. The latest update, the Two Cities Update, for TF2 arrives today and will add new maps to the popular co-op defense mode, Mann Vs. Machine, along with new cosmetic items that allow you to deck out your items with colorful effects. With these Killstreak Kits, your weapon can glow and you can show off how good you are and killing “tiny baby men.” At least check out the site for more of Valve’s trademark humor and promotional stuff for the update which is absolutely hilarious. They released a new animated short, which is always cool! Read more…
