Looks like DC is hiring back Brandon Routh after kind of ruining his career with Superman Returns. The actor will appear in the third season of Arrow as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. However, he won’t be donning a red and blue outfit again. This time, he’ll be playing Ray Palmer, a scientist and inventor better known to fans as The Atom, DC’s shrinking superhero. It’s nice to see Routh get any roles these days, because he’s still a good actor. The last thing I saw him in was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which he was great in. Maybe this role could get expanded in the future beyond this season? Read more…

It seems that “six seasons and a movie” is still a possibility for Community. When NBC declined to renew the critically-acclaimed yet ratings-deficient series, it seems that the aforementioned meme would finally be killed off. But on the last day before the actors’ contracts expired, Yahoo stepped in to renew the series for its sixth season. Creator Dan Harmon, producer Chris McKenna, and the regular cast will all return. Yahoo is trying to ramp up its original content, and snagging the next season of a cult show guarantees them a built-in audience for their service. The question now is whether or not Community will continue beyond this sixth season. Will the series do well enough for Yahoo to host a seventh season? Or will Community get its predestined movie? You want to know how Peter Capaldi will do as the Doctor, right? Well, this teaser… will not tell you that. It barely shows anything, actually. But when you’re a desperate Doctor Who fan, you’ll take any morsel you can get. However, the real news isn’t the teaser, it’s the premier date for the eighth season: August 23rd. It’ll air on both BBC and BBC America, so no waiting for US-based fans, either (although that hasn’t really been an issue these days). Check out the short teaser below and then set your DVRs for August 23rd! Read more…

Yup: no one can stop the Game of Thrones train. The fantasy series has beaten the previous record-holder at HBO, The Sopranos, to become the company’s most popular show ever averaging a gross audience of 18.4 million viewers. That’s a lot of fans. The previous record was 18.2 million, by HBO’s iconic Sopranos, but it seems that dragons, swords, and magic were able to win more people over than a classic crime drama. And that’s saying something, I think! Just don’t expect anyone to make it out alive of this next season, you know? Read more…

Yes, it’s another Kickstarter, but one I never thought I’d be writing about. LeVar Burton has come to Kickstarter to being back Reading Rainbow. The plan is to make new episodes and put them online, and then also distribute them free to classrooms across the country, all in an attempt to get more kids interested in reading again. It seems pretty cool, although the pitch video is a little over-the-top. Still, I think it’s a great cause, and apparently so did everyone else: the one million dollar goal was reached in just 11 hours, and now it’s almost doubled. Yeah, that’s pretty impressive. Check out their pitch video below and then visit the Kickstarter page here. Read more…

Drew Goddard leaving Marvel’s Daredevil show (coming to Netflix) in order to concentrate on making The Sinister Six for Sony was a bummer when we learned it last weekend. But thankfully, Goddard’s replacement seems well-picked, and now we know who will be playing the titular role. Charlie Cox will play blind lawyer Matt Murdock who becomes the vigilante Daredevil. You may recognize Cox from his roles on Boardwalk Empire and Stardust, and now you’ll be watching 13 episodes of him on Netflix, in the first of several various superhero series that are planned. As someone who is eagerly devouring anything connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, I’m pretty excited to see what Marvel can do with Netflix. Read more…

We all know Peter Capaldi will be playing the Twelfth Doctor when the new Doctor Who‘s eight season starts this August on BBC One. With filming having started earlier this year, it’s about time to start promoting the new season. So what do we get? The most teaser-y teaser to ever tease. We get a logo, an approximate date, some ominous music, and a couple frames of Capaldi in shadow. There is so little to actually tease, because this offers us nothing new to freak out over! At least give us a quip, an arm movement, a stare! Regardless, I’m sure this will throw some fans into a tizzy. Read more…

Two weeks after I complained about DC and WB not taking full advantage of their comic adaptations, NBC put out this trailer for Constantine, a new TV series airing this fall based on the Hellblazer/Constantine comics, previously published under DC’s Vertigo imprint. And damn, this blows the trailer for Fox’s Gotham out of the water. Unlike the Keanu Reeves movie (which was enjoyable, but not actually a faithful adaptation), this looks like a real, well-made version of the original comics. Go on, watch this trailer and tell me you’re not excited to see a con man magician fight supernatural beasties as they creep into our world.

Who knows if we’ll ever get “six seasons and a movie” now. NBC has canceled Community, following it’s fifth season. Apparently ratings weren’t high enough for them to bother with it, and with Community canceled, I have no reason to bother with NBC. What a shame! Sure, we had Donald Glover leave in season 5, but it definitely felt like a return to form after 4. All’s not lost, however, we’re not in the darkest timeline yet — Sony Pictures TV is reportedly trying to find a new home for Community, possibly on Netflix or a cable channel. Hopefully Hulu’s streaming rights won’t interfere with that. If Netflix rescues Community, then it’ll be two for two with my favorite comedy TV shows (the other being Arrested Development). Six seasons and a movie! Read more…

I can somewhat hear the surprise from some readers, but yes, Power Rangers are still a thing. Why? Because it’s fun to watch, and because Japan keeps making a new Super Sentai show every year, so there’s no shortage of material. But since Hollywood loves remaking stuff, Saban is working with Lionsgate to make a new movie based on the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, setting aside all the various themed teams that have been featured since. There have been two Power Rangers movies in the past, but this one looks like a solid reboot instead of a continuation. No further information was given, so it’s too soon to speculate, but I hope they don’t ditch the colorful robots and snappy style in favor of a dark, gritty take on the series. We’ve had too much of that these days. Read more…

Good news for Batman fans who weren’t satiated by the Dark Knight Trilogy, the critically-acclaimed Arkham series of videogames, and the upcoming Batman vs. Superman: Fox has picked up Gotham, a police drama centered on Jim Gordon and set before Bruce Wayne became Batman. Ben McKenzie is portraying a younger Gordon, while David Mazouz is young Bruce Wayne and Sean Pertwee is Alfred Pennyworth; Jada Pinkett Smith, and Donal Logue are also supporting cast. And naturally, there are some villains involved. Read more…

The Simpsons LEGO episode is coming up on May 4th, and Hulu has uploaded a new trailer to give fans a peek at “Brick Like Me.” It looks like they’re really going hard on the “alternate universe” angle. The funny thing is, the creators of the episode said they’ve been working on this way before The LEGO Movie and the LEGO Simpsons Figures (with sculpted features rather than the plain yellow heads), so that explains some of the obvious differences. Still, while I’m not much a Simpsons fan, I am a LEGO fan, so this could be entertaining to watch. Check out the video! Read more…

Well, that wasn’t entirely unsurprising. The sci-fi series Almost Human, which airs on Fox, has been canceled by the network after only one season. The show featured Karl Urban as a human detective partnered with a lifelike robot played by Michael Ealy. The show never quite impressed critics, and I can attest to being disinterested, despite enjoying Urban. Part of the show’s misfortune, however, stemmed from Fox’s decision to air the episodes out of order, messing up minor continuity and how the characters reacted to each other. My girlfriend stuck with the show and was quite annoyed at how this ruined the show’s pacing. You’d think after Fox did the same thing to Firefly, they would have realized not to mess with a show’s continuity like that, but that’s Fox for you. Read more…

Most stories don’t need a modern reboot, at least not in the manner that Hollywood has been constantly remaking any semi-notable IP the last several years. But I’m partway through the fourth season of SyFy’s 2003-2009 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, and I’m thoroughly impressed with what they made. I don’t feel the need to go watch the original 1978 series, but I’m very happy with what they made for modern audiences. Of course, that story ended, and a few spin-offs not withstanding, its story has come to a close. Guess it’s time to reboot it again! Read more…

As rumored, Amazon has been working on a set-top box that will stream video and play videogames. Now they’ve announced the Amazon FireTV, which does that! The box uses a quad-core 1.7 GHz CPU, dedicated GPU, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a dual-band wireless radio with two antennas (for streaming 1080p over WiFi) to try to outperform Apple TV and Roku. Naturally, it has access to Amazon Prime, but there are all the usual video and music streaming apps, plus more specialized ones like Twitch and WWE; users can compare prices between various apps to see where it’s cheapest to watch a movie. The remote is also special, with a microphone included that allows you to search content with your voice. Or you could use Amazon’s bells and whistles to have it predict and cue up what it thinks you want to watch.

Community always does great references that actually are clever and unique. So today, they’re spoiling one by posting their G.I. Joe PSA parody from the upcoming G.I. Joe-themed episode. I’ve always enjoyed their animated bits — or any joke where they use something other than live-action — and this one is no exception. Pay attention to their code names, they’re pretty good. The only thing: are we going to see parodies of the internet classic Fensler Films version next? Now that would be amazing. Body massage! Read more…

HBO has been ramping up for the April 6th premiere of Game of Thrones season 4, and what better way to excite people than to remind them of all the tragedy so far?! Yes, they’ve released their season 3 recap, which covers almost everything that happened last year (and has some actor interviews as well), including the infamous Red Wedding. If you haven’t watched the show thus far, it might not make the most sense, and obviously I want to recommend that you watch it all anyway, but not everyone has time to watch 3 seasons of a TV show before April 6th. Either way, it’s a great refresher! Check it out below. Read more…

Now that True Detective is finished, it’s time to start getting excited for the next big show: Game of Thrones, season four! After the tragedy and incredible breakdowns by fans last season, I can’t wait to see the reactions people have this time around. Granted, I’m sitting up on my “I read the books” platform, but it’s still incredibly enjoyable to watch it all play out. This latest trailer teases a bunch of big storylines, namely Dany’s ever-growing dragons and the new threats from Dorne. Avoid the internet if you don’t want anything spoiled, because this is going to be an intense season. Read more…

True Detective finishes tonight, and I think it’s a safe bet to say that it’ll be great. One thing HBO’s show does, though, is feature the wonderful low, gravelly-voiced detective archetype — yes, both of the main characters. At first it might be difficult to decipher their southern mutterings, but soon you fit right into the groove. But it looks like the crew at The Soup along with Joel McHale haven’t exactly figured it out yet in their latest parody video, in which they lampoon Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey’s performances. Not all the jokes hit, but the reactions are pretty entertaining. Read more…

The Simpsons have been getting lot of big-names involved in their couch gags, recently featuring such names as Guillermo Del Toro and more. The latest, airing this Sunday (March 9th), is done by Sylvian Chomet, the director of the fantastic animated films the Triplets of Belleville and The Illusionist. It features his distinctive style applied to all the characters, but the jokes are pretty standard fare. That said, it’s some great animation and contrasts pretty heavily with the cheaper stuff used by the Simpsons now. Check it out! Read more…

LEGO CUUSOO is a great service. Just recently we got an amazing Ghostbusters Ecto-1 model from it! But some licenses or properties are immediately discarded due to existing licensing deals or other limits on the IP people want LEGO models of. Doctor Who was an example of this: submit all you want, but it wasn’t happening. We don’t know what was preventing it, but now we have good news: it’s gone! Fans can now submit Doctor Who LEGO set ideas to their hearts content and vote them up. Remember, you’ve got to get 10,000 votes on something before it’ll even be considered. Good luck! Read more…

He looks like the Flash, alright.
Were we expecting anything different? It’s really hard to get those full-head masks to look right, though. This one looks okay. I can appreciate the attempt to keep the lightning bolts on the side. Colleen Atwood, who designed the Arrow’s costume, designed this one as well. The pilot for the Flash TV series will begin filming very soon, aiming at release in the 2014-2015 season on the CW. It also aims to be part of a larger DC universe the resides on TV — whether these TV characters will ever cross into the feature film realm is unknown yet. It could be an easy way to test the waters, though! Read more…

I’m aware that Star Wars: The Clone Wars is set between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, so it’s unavoidably tied to the prequels. But as this trailer for the sixth and final season shows, it’s clearly one of the best thing to come out of those movies, almost the point where I wish we could just forget the movies happened completely. Fans are lucky that this final season is coming out on March 7 on Netflix (along with all the previous episodes), but until then, this really cool trailer will have to tide them over. It seems that Star Wars: Rebels is going to have some giant shoes to fill. Read more…

Yup, the canceled TV show Heroes is coming back to NBC as a new short 13 episode series called Heroes Reborn. I imagine with the explosion of super hero-themed movies and TV shows, they want back in on the action. They didn’t release anything regarding the plot or other details. They did mention that a web series will start prior to the debut, to introduce new characters. They also mentioned that previous characters could return as well, but didn’t specify beyond that. I wonder if this’ll actually do well, or flop completely. The series will start in 2015. Read more…
