The Doctor’s Latest Lovely Companion

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 22, 2012 in Dr. Who

Jenna-Louise Coleman & Steven Moffat

Yesterday, Doctor Who series producer Steven Moffat stunned everyone when he unveiled The Doctor’s latest companion would be played by soap star Jenna-Louise Coleman. It pains me to say that Coleman character will be replacing Amy Pond and Rory Williams mid-season, but she’ll be making her debut immediately following their departure from the series.

More Bad News for Battlestar Fans

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 22, 2012 in Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome Concept Art

At last weekend’s WonderCon in Anaheim, fans were treated to a short trailer for Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome — a  proposed prequel to the recent series, taking place during the first Cylon war. A 90 minute pilot had been filmed with the intent of pitching the series to Syfy, but just yesterday the network announced they would be passing on the series. Although it won’t air on a regular basis, Syfy’s Mark Stern did confirm that they intend to air the 90 pilot as a TV movie at a later date, with the rest of the series produced as webisodes. At least a webseries is better than no series, but I can’t imagine what kind of budget cuts they’ll have to make as a result.

TV Stars Set Up Spoiler Rules

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 17, 2012 in Television

All tongue-in-cheek of course. College Humor joined together with a large list of TV celebs from your favorite shows like True Blood, Walking Dead, The Wire, and Dexter. Normally I’m not too big a fan of CH’s videos, but this one keeps it simple and delivers. The actual rules listed for spoilers actually aren’t too bad either, but let’s face it, we’re not going to get everyone to agree. Especially when someone so badly wants to tell you about whatever last episode they watched, but you’re not caught up yet. It’s just going to happen.

Finally: Legend of Korra Scheduled to Begin April 14th

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 16, 2012 in Animation, Television

korra

After much vagueness and waiting, the release date for The Legend of Korra (sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender) has finally been announced: April 14th at 11am. Sooner than you thought, right? It could be even sooner as Nickelodeon is running a Facebook promo to unlock the premier episode early. If they garner 100,000 likes on their Facebook page, they’ll release the episode on March 24th, presumably on their website. They also released a new trailer to hype the announcement as well, so check it out after the jump! Read more…

What’s New at Nick?

Posted by Joe Strike on Mar 15, 2012 in Animation, Television

Nickelodeon logo

Hey, it’s uprfront time again, when the TV networks do their best razzle-dazzle to get the advertisers excited over their new and returning shows. Nickelodeon’s particularly good at this (not that I’ve been to that many all told) and yesterday’s was no exception. Once again the network took over the Jazz at Lincoln Center venue on Columbus Circle and invited several hundred ad agency folks and a few media reporters (hi mom!) to the event. Read more…

Alternate Walking Dead Intro Brings Smiles

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 9, 2012 in Fandom, Television

walkin

Here’s a little fun for your day: an alternate Walking Dead intro created by tlunsford in the style of a 70s/80s TV intro. Trust me, it’s better than it sounds. Given that Walking Dead is more about the people than the zombies, something like this makes sense. Tlunsford jokes in the video description, “this new intro for season 2.5 seems to shine a light on the character dynamics of this ragtag group of zombie survivors and the impending daddy issues that Laurie’s pregnancy is sure to bring.” Oh, I’m willing to bet you’re closer to the truth than you think, buddy. Community Animated Short, Abed’s Master Key

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 8, 2012 in Animation, Television

Animated shorts never seem to be as good as the actual shows they’re based off, but with Community making its return to NBC later this month, something’s better than nothing. In the first installment of Community: Abed’s Master Key we catch up with the study group as they discover their study room tables missing due to budget cuts. Dean Pelton makes Abed his unpaid intern/assistant, handing him a key — as to what the key actually does, we’ll just have to wait and see. Only the first part has been released so far, but future installments will be available via Hulu. Community returns from its hiatus March 15th, 8PM Eastern/Pacific on NBC.

Lucas Featured on Ridley Scott’s Prophets Finale

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 7, 2012 in Star Wars, Television

George Lucas

I’m not sure how many of you have been keeping up with Ridley Scott’s Prophets of Science Fiction — not every cable provider carries the network it airs on — but it’s been a pretty good season so far.  The season’s coming to an end, but what better way than to feature the man behind the force itself, George Lucas. The season finale airs tonight at 10 PM Eastern on Science.

Fox Pulls the Plug on Terra Nova

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 6, 2012 in Television

Terra Nova

Well, I can’t say I didn’t see this coming — Fox has decided to cancel Terra Nova, and will not be renewing the series for a second season. The series seemed popular enough to sustain an audience, but viewership declined over the course of its 13 episode run, leaving studio execs with the choice of footing the bill for the show’s enormous budget, or cutting their losses. Given Fox’s track record with shows like Firefly and The Sarah Connor Chronicles, I’m sure everyone could have guessed which option they’d pick. That being the case, the series did seem to suffer from poor writing, and the premise didn’t seem all that original to begin with. Read more…

Seven Devils of the Seven Kingdoms

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 5, 2012 in Television

Here’s the latest trailer for second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones, and perhaps the most breathtaking yet. The clips they’ve used contain some fresh footage, and are spliced together beautifully. The music is also quite striking, in a haunted sort of way. Then again, if you’ve already read George R.R. Martin’s A Clash of Kings or A Storm of Swords, then you’d find it appropriate given the events that will take place this season.

Doctor Who: the Inappropriately Titled Trailer

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 27, 2012 in Dr. Who, Videogames

So here’s the latest trailer for BBC Worldwide and Supermassive Games’ upcoming adventure title, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. BBC decided to label it “epic,” but I’m not so sure about that. It certainly features a lot of rotating environments, voice acting and running. The Doctor and River both make an appearance, voiced by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston respectively, and it will be the first Vita game to utilize the Unreal Engine, but that last bit is hardly anything to brag about. The engine has been around for awhile and it certainly showing its age. The game, set to release sometime next month, will be available via PlayStation Network for both the PlayStation Vita, and PS3.

Darth Maul Returns in the Clone Wars, Now Featuring New Legs

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 25, 2012 in Star Wars, Television

darthmaul

Remember how we heard a while back Darth Maul would be making a return to the Star Wars universe in the CGI animated Clone Wars series? Well it’s happening, and just in time to help promote Episode I in theaters. Oh, Lucasfilm, you clever bunch, you. Given that Darth Maul was pretty cleanly separated from the lower half of his body, one might wonder how exactly you obtain a fresh pair of mechanical legs while, you know, not dying. But those are not the questions you should be asking, yells the marketing director. “Look how cool he is!” Trailer after the break. Read more…

Community Set to Return Mid-March

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 22, 2012 in Television

NBC's Community D&D episode

Fans of NBC’s Community can finally exhale, the show is set to return to its 8PM slot starting Thursday, March 15th. I know many of you were terrified when the show was suddenly placed on hiatus earlier this year, myself included, but thankfully we won’t have to worry about its cancellation any time soon. NBC is apparently shaking up its line up with 30 Rock moving to 8:30, and Parks & Recreation going on a hiatus of its own. Fortunately, you won’t have to wait on pins and needles for Parks, as it’s scheduled to return April 19th at 9:30, as soon as Up All Night finishes the last of its 24-episode run. They’ll also be launching some new mid-season comedies for Wednesday nights, but none of them really look all that interesting. I’m sad to see Parks & Rec take a breather, but Community to fill that void, I’m sure I’ll learn to live with it. Read more…

An Invitation to the Game of Thrones

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 21, 2012 in Television

HBO’s at it again, having just posted this little featurette with the cast for the second season of Game of Thrones. Seeing how passionate the actors feel towards the show itself speaks volumes and serves to remind us of how magnificent the show really is. In addition, we get to see some behind-the-scenes footage from the set, as well as a glimpse at some of the new actors who will be joining the cast next season, although none of them were interviewed.

Spoiler-free Game of Thrones Promo Posters

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 20, 2012 in Television

Game of Thrones Season 2 posters 1

This weekend, HBO released a series of spoiler-free character posters advertising the upcoming season of Game of Thrones. Set to premiere this April, the second season will follow second novel in George R.R. Martin’s award-winning series A Song of Ice & Fire, picking up right where A Game of Thrones left off. Having read the books, I’ve been dying to talk about it, but I’m afraid of spoiling anything for those who haven’t had a chance to pick up the novels. Without spoiling too much, I can assure you this next season should be full of action, suspense and intrigue. They’ll even spend more time north of The Wall. Check out the posters after the break and remember, Game of Thrones season 2 premieres April 1st on HBO. Read more…

Fake Rom-Com Trailer Helps Advertise Walking Dead

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 19, 2012 in Television

walkingdead1

A clever bunch of marketing folks in South Africa recently needed to promote the second season of Walking Dead. So how better to do that than unleash a zombie on the public? They gathered a group of unsuspecting people to watch a rom-com movie trailer (a very fake one) but then set their zombie loose in the theater. It sounds lame, but trust me, the ending is worth it. Yakuza J-Drama Gets a Second Season

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 13, 2012 in Japanese TV, Videogames

20120212-225225.jpg

Here in the West, Sega’s Yakuza series is considered a bit niche, but that hasn’t kept its fans from falling in love with it. When Sega of America decided to skimp with their localizations, fans were passionately vocal in their opposition. In Japan however, the series has been so successful that it’s led to two films by acclaimed cult-director Takeshi Miike, and a television drama based on the PSP spin-off Yakuza: Black Panther. This April, the drama returns with a second season based on the upcoming sequel.

Bleeding Cool has scooped art and some minor details regarding a new comic book series from IDW starring The Doctor, Amy, Captain Picard, Worf, and the rest of the gang. Red Alert! Space:1999 to be Reimagined as Space 2099

Posted by Michael Pinto on Feb 9, 2012 in Television

Space 2099 Poster

This is either going to be great or terrible: It looks like there’s a deal in the works to do a reimagined version of Space:1999 which is currently titled Space 2099. It looks like the project is a joint venture between ITV Studios America and HDFILMS which is based out of Hollywood. Above is a promotional poster which looks cool — although we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed that the scripting and the casting are good.

The Doctor, The Widow and the Blu-ray

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 9, 2012 in Dr. Who, Television

The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe Blu-ray

For those in need of a Doctor Who fix, 2011 Christmas special, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe, is set to hit stores on February 14th, just in time for Valentines day. Some of you might have caught my mini-review back in December, and while I felt it wasn’t the Doctor at his best, the special certainly had its moments. For some of you it’ll make an awesome alternative to flowers or chocolates, and for others it might just serve to hold you over till the Doctor returns to BBC later this year. For those of you who want to pre-order it, Amazon is selling the Blu-ray for $15.99, or if you’d rather have it on DVD, just $10.99. Amazon prime members can select free 2-day shipping to receive their copy on the 14th instead of having to wait.

The Greatest 80’s Cartoon Never Made

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 7, 2012 in Animation, Television

This awesome animated short has been floating around the net for a few weeks now, but hasn’t garnered a fraction of the views it deserves. Space Stallions was created by a group of students from The Animation Workshop attempting to capture the essence of 80’s cartoons like Voltron, Thunder Cats, and so on. Personally, I think they hit the nail on the head. The music was dead on with everything from sequenced arps and laser toms to its poorly written chorus. Visually, they touched on everything you’d expect to see like several of the characters rocking a mustache, Unicorn space-bikes, oh and a keytar sword. While I don’t think I’d ever want to sit through an actual episode should they ever make one, I have to applaud their awesome efforts here. Oh, and if you want to buy a copy of that theme song, you’re in luck. It’s available via BandCamp. Read more…

A Game of Thrones the Board Game 2nd Edition

I have a bit of a soft spot when it comes to board games. Recently, I banded together with a group of friends for a weekly game and while we’ve no shortage to choose from, my friends are always in the market for more. With HBO’s second season of Game of Thrones around the corner, this little gem caught my eye. Fantasy Flight’s A Game of Thrones the Board Game. Read more…

The Doctor’s Leaving London Next Month

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jan 31, 2012 in Dr. Who, Fandom

Doctor Who Experience

For anyone visiting or living in London, the clock is ticking for the Doctor Who Experience. The exhibit will be closing its doors next month, but before that happens, they’ve planned several special events leading up to the last day. On Saturday, February 11th, series choreographer Ailsa Berk will be on hand offering lessons on how to move like your favorite aliens from the show. That following Monday, the effects team responsible for sculpting some of the show’s fearsome creatures will show off some of their techniques. Read more…
