Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 17, 2010 in Cinema, Fandom, Star Wars

A teaser has been released for the upcoming fan film Star Wars: Uncut. For those of you who haven’t heard about the project, the film consists of 15 second clips by fans in an attempt recreate  Episode IV: A New Hope in its entirety. Because Hoth is Never Hot: A Star Wars Weather Forecast

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 15, 2010 in Fandom, Star Wars

Star Wars: A Tauntaun on Hoth

Have you ever wondered what the weather outside would be like if you were in a galaxy far, far away? Well, now you can know, thanks in part to Tom Scott’s Star Wars Weather Forecast. The site uses Yahoo!’s weather service to determine the forecast for any city you choose and presents it to you in terms any true Star Wars fan could understand. If it’s muggy and humid, you’ll get Dagobah. Temperate but cloudy? Endor, maybe. Currently New York City is like Naboo: Read more…

Jabba the Cat Says “Hay Lapa No Ya, Mouse!”

Jabba the Cat

The charm of a really good internet meme is that they’re so simple that they make you burst out laughing. Like a good bounty hunter I did my best to track down the owner of Jabba the Cat, but alas after going through tineye.com (no results), Google image search (links to several reposts) and then to various Tumblr blogs I still hit a dead end.

The Death Star Watermelon: The Pitfalls of the Dark Side

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 22, 2010 in Fandom, Star Wars

Death Star Watermelon

This creative Star Wars themed fruit carving dates back to last year, but it’s still a classic to me! To me the Death Star is a symbol of just how iconic that Star Wars has become over the last few decades — there have been references to the superweapon in every show from the Powerpuff Girls to the anime series Crayon Shin Chan. So coolstoppers.com have solved this issue by creating a series of Star Wars wine stoppers: So you can have the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia, Han Solo and a Stormtrooper guarding your vino. How a Boba Fett Transformed Media

Posted by Michael Pinto on Mar 3, 2010 in Star Wars

This video featuring Tim Kring of Heroes and Peter Hirshberg makes a very interesting point about the The Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978: Their thinking is that even though the special was quite bad that the genius of it is that George Lucas is inventing what they call “transmedia storytelling” — the concept of using multiple mediums to tell a story. Their example is that by introducing Boba Fett that Lucas expanded the Star Wars universe and was then able to introduce the bounty hunter as a toy and then in the next film. Read more…

Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer Framed SpecPlate

Apparently the dark side isn’t just evil — but evil to your credit card: This amazing Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyer Framed SpecPlate will set you a mere $1,994.99! Of course only 25 will be produced of this goodie which emulates the dedication plate that would be attached to the bulkhead of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Of course Acme Archives who makes this collectable didn’t skimp on the quality as this keepsake measures 43 by 24-inches and is made out of aluminum. Although the thing that surprises me is that I wouldn’t have expected the Empire to be so sentimental…

A Darker Darth Helmet

Posted by Michael Pinto on Feb 6, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader Concept Helmet

My first reaction when looking at this Ralph McQuarrie Darth Vader Concept Helmet collectable was “this makes him look even more evil than the original”. In terms of the design I think the reason is that this early take on Darth Vader is much more angular and lean-and-mean — also the infamous mask has a slightly anime feel to it, and I think that’s because you can see the dark samurai side of McQuarrie’s influence: Read more…

Animated Slave Leia Takes No Prisoners

Star Wars Slave Leia Animated Maquette

We always vilify poor Jabba the Hutt, but in doing so we overlook the amazing criminal genius that created the Slave Leia look which would infiltrate the minds of countless young impressionable Star Wars fanboys for several generations. However sadly this wanton space fantasy was endangered when anime maid collectables started being produced from Japan en masse — so George Lucas had to do something: And thus we have the Star Wars Slave Leia Animated Maquette shown above.

Star Wars Legacy #47 cover illustration by Sean Cooke

Back in the day science fiction book covers always looked realistic while comic book covers looked like — well comic books! However the last few years that has faded away and comic book covers remind me more and more of the good old days of paperbacks: Except unlike paperbacks the format is even larger. So I was blown away with the quality of this cover by art by Sean Cooke for Star Wars Legacy #47. Read more…
