Darth Vader Batman is Every Kid’s Dream Action Figure

Posted by Ben Huber on May 6, 2012 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

vaderbatman

If you polled kids and asked them about their favorite fictional characters, I’m gonna guess Darth Vader and Batman would be pretty high up on the list. Now if you combine the two? You get the Darth Knight, an amazingly detailed custom action figure by John Harmon at Mint Condition Customs. This model stands 6 inches tall and would probably eat your other action figures for breakfast. If you were wanting to get your hands on this figure, though, you’re out of luck, as he’s already been sold. Better get cracking on making your own! Read more…

A Feast of Ice and Fire

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 23, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Television

A feast of Ice and Fire cover

Having read all George Martin’s on-going saga A Song of Ice and Fire, as well as having seen every episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones to date,  I feel one aspect that remains consistently featured throughout would be the food. Martin often takes his time writing detailed descriptions of Westerosi cuisine, from their aromas to the taste itself. So, naturally Bantam has decided to use those descriptions to help craft A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook, in what I can only guess as being a sad attempt to cash in on the Game of Thrones-craze. That said, I really wouldn’t mind taking a look at some of the recipes included in the book. Martin certainly makes them sound appetizing enough when you’re reading his novels, so I would hope the authors & chefs involved could succeed in capturing the taste. A Feast of Ice and Fire should hit shelves May 29th and will retail for $35.

Mind-Controlled Cat Ears Street-Dated

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 17, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Tech

neurowear vol.1 necomimi

Remember these? Last May we posted a video for Nuerowear’s mind-controlled fashion accessory “necomimi” — or cat ears. That right, they’re a pair of car ears you can control with a thought. Until now, they haven’t been made available for sale. The first batch will go on sale at the Nico Nico Super Conference being held in Chiba later this month for just 7,900 yen — that’s about $100 a pair. Of course, that’s a special price just for the event. They’ll actually retail for about $112 after that. I still can’t imagine anyone wanting to sport a pair of these on a daily basis, but once again, I’m sure they’d make for a fantastic addition to any cat-girl cosplay. Read more…

World of Warcraft Mega Bloks Are Both Block-y and Warcraft-y

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

AF910081A_MAIN_HR

I have to admit, these Mega Blok sets don’t look too bad! Looks like MB has teamed up to create World of Warcraft sets, and if you’re a fan of building blocks, then these sets might just scratch that itch. I was always a LEGO kid, and Mega Bloks just seemed like a rip-off brand to me when I was younger. They’re certainly better now, but it still seems like a lot of large pieces. Check out more pics below! Read more…

Gentle Giant Making Spider-Man Busts, Faces Not Quite Right

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

spidey1

These busts from Gentle Giant for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man film look pretty good. They have a fair attention to detail and have nice poses. The Lizard looks menacing, and Spider-Man is leaping in action from buildings – it’s all good stuff. But the alternate version with Spidey’s mask off isn’t quite there yet: I think it needs another revision or two, mainly because it doesn’t look like Andrew Garfield at all. Am I the only one thinking this? Read more…

Fantastic Shaun of the Dead LEGO Model Needs Your Support

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 31, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

shaunofthedead

The LEGO CUUSOO site has been a big focus of the internet recently. The ability to vote up neat ideas to become official LEGO sets is too cool to pass up for many, so we’ve seen an explosion of popularity, especially with the recent Minecraft set. So what’s the latest? Shaun of the Dead! It’s a great model of the Winchester from the zombie film, in ‘Modular’ form which is LEGO’s line of buildings aimed at adult collectors. It needs 10,000 supporters for LEGO to begin the process to make it a set (it has around 8200 currently), so get on over to the CUUSOO site and sign up! Read more…

Well thank Broadway, Topps, and IDW, because they’re bring you a musical adaption of Mars Attacks, the popular sci-fi trading card set, and it’s set to debut next year. Square Enix Rewards Deadline Looms

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 21, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

Square Enix Rewards 2010

I’m sure some of you might already know about Square Enix and their annual rewards program, but for those of you who don’t, you’ll probably want to. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve opened a new game, only to pull out the disc, toss the box to the side and ignore the rest of its contents. I always justify it by thinking I don’t need a instruction manual, or that I couldn’t care less about some pre-formatted health warnings I’ve read a million times, but in doing so, I often miss that little sheet asking me to register the game. I know what you’re thinking — why bother? Find out why after the jump.

Sideshow Builds Their Catalog With LEGO

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 15, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

Lego logo

Here’s an interesting bit of news for you LEGO collectors out there — Sideshow Collectibles will start stocking sets in the near future. The online retailer is known for having exclusive, limited edition pieces while offering special incentives to repeat shoppers. In fact, they even offer flexible payment plans, though I’ve always been a little weary of purchasing anything I couldn’t already afford, but with the price of most LEGO sets these days, its nice to have options. Unfortunately, Sideshow hasn’t revealed any further information. Whether or not they’ll carry every product line, or if they’re planning to release exclusive sets remains to be seen, but you can keep informed by signing up for their LEGO newsletter here.

If you’re a die-hard fan of Epic’s Gears of War, or just a fan of awesome looking props, you’ll want to feast your eyes on this 1:1 scale replica of snub pistol featured in Gears of War 3. Although I’m not a huge fan of the series, I have a soft spot for ornate Sci-Fi weaponry, and even I have to admit how sweet this piece looks. Read more…

Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard in Salt Art

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 6, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

To help commemorate tonight’s release of Mass Effect 3, I thought I’d post this interesting bit of fan art. Until today, I never knew salt was something people actually used for artistic purposes, but as you’ll see in this time-lapsed video, salt art can be quite impressive. No doubt it’s incredibly time consuming, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue for Bashir Sultani, the artist responsible for the piece. It actually took around two and a half hours for him to complete it, though I imagine someone who isn’t used to working with salt might have taken much longer. If you’re interested, he has entire YouTube channel dedicated to the art and it’s definitely worth checking out.

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 17, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

legominecraft1

Remember those Minecraft LEGO sets we kept hearing about? Well here it is: the third LEGO CUUSOO crowd-voted project! It’s modular in design, so while it fits together as a single model (as seen above) it also separates into 4 sections that function as their own set. It doesn’t look too bad (and for the LEGO collectors out there, it has lots of handy flat 1×1 tiles in it). You can pre-order it through J!NX’s online store for $34.99 and it’ll release in the summer! Read more…

You Bojo, Those Boards Don’t Work on Water!

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 14, 2012 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

Back to the Future 2 Hover Board

I always thought it’d be cool to own one of those hover boards from Back to the Future II & III, but I don’t think anyone has actually tried to manufacture one, that is, until now. Revealed at yesterday’s New York Toy Fair, MattyCollector.com plans to manufacture a 1:1 scale replica of Marty’s hover board as it was seen in the films. While they claim the board doesn’t actually hover, it apparently glides over most surfaces. Additionally, the cost of manufacturing the boards would be so much that they will need to reach a certain amount of pre-orders before going ahead with production. If the minimum, which has yet to be disclosed along with the price, is not met by the deadline of March 20th, all pre-orders will be refunded in full. Again, while the price has yet to be disclosed, pre-orders will start on March 1st and run through the 20th. Oh and keep in mind, it won’t work on water.

The Avengers in Lego

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 13, 2012 in Comic Books, Hobbies and Collections

20120213-003835.jpg

The other week we showed off a little teaser for Lego’s upcoming Lord of the Rings product line, but it’s not the only film license they have in the works. With Marvel’s The Avengers coming to theaters this summer, Lego will be dropping a few sets to tie-in with the film. I’m not posting photos of all of them as they might actually spoil a few scenes from the film, but if you just have to see them, click here. Otherwise, just click on the break for more.

Now You Can Own A Real Portal Gun (Minus the Making-Portals Part)

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 11, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

portal1

NECA promised us a Portal gun replica a while back, and now it’s finally up for pre-order! At least, on Japanese toy sites. Yes, the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device can soon be yours, for only ¥16,000. That’s almost $200, with our currently delightful exchange rate. However, most sites discount it for pre-orders and Hobby Search (sold out) has it for roughly ¥13,000, while AmiAmi is running at ¥12,400 (still available). But, there’s this little thing called Toy Fair happening next week where we’ll be hearing more about an American release. Read more…

I’ve Always Wanted a Dread Pirate

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 6, 2012 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

Dread Pirate Roberts

I think its safe to call The Princess Bride a timeless classic. I’ve always been fond of it, and I don’t believe I’ve ever met anyone who felt otherwise. That said, I never thought I’d ever see any merchandise based off the film, or book for that matter, and certainly not a collectible figure. Fortunately, that didn’t stop Factory Entertainment from delivering. Introducing their 1/5th scale Dread Pirate Roberts. This 15″ statue features the Man in Black as he appears during his infamous duel atop the “Cliffs of Insanity.” It actually  has a companion piece featuring Inigo Montoya which you can view below. The two statues are designed to attach to each other, allowing you to capture the scene properly.

Macross’ VF-1 Valkyrie Meets Lego

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 2, 2012 in Animation, Hobbies and Collections

This Lego Cuusoo project has been around for awhile, but has remained a bit of a hidden gem. Cuusoo user MaxVF1 threw together these amazing VF-1 Valkyries — or Veritechs depending on your preference — in hopes of convincing Lego to license them for retail. As you can see from the video above, they’re pretty easy to snap together and make pretty good display models. They even let you shift between gear-walk, battloid, and fighter modes with ease. The problem, at least from Lego’s standpoint, is that they appear a bit fragile. Of course, that issue alone is just one of many hurdles to overcome.

A Board Game of Thrones, 2nd Edition

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 1, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Television

A Game of Thrones the Board Game 2nd Edition

I have a bit of a soft spot when it comes to board games. Recently, I banded together with a group of friends for a weekly game and while we’ve no shortage to choose from, my friends are always in the market for more. With HBO’s second season of Game of Thrones around the corner, this little gem caught my eye. Fantasy Flight’s A Game of Thrones the Board Game. Read more…

One Brick to Rule Them All

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jan 31, 2012 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

lego-lord-of-the-rings-character-lineup-image-1

Here’s a quick teaser for Lego’s Lord of the Rings product line. Why does Lego taunt me with such awesomeness? They knew I outgrew my building phase years ago, yet they’ve waited until now to land this epic license. While I’m sure I won’t have nearly as much fun as I would have if I were still eight years old, I’ll definitely consider picking one up when they hit stores, and judging by how great the characters look, I’m sure they won’t disappoint. I do wonder if this also means we’ll be seeing some Hobbit-themed sets this holiday season. Be sure to visit the official site for more info on the upcoming sets. Read more…

DoubleStar’s Zombie-X AK Might Help in the Event of an Outbreak

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 28, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

chainsaw

Need the perfect weapon for dealing with a few zombies? You’d need to have the foresight to own one of these things, but let’s face it, chances are you want one, zombie apocalypse or not. This gun combines an AK with a chainsaw – attempting to make all your Gears of War fantasies come true. It sure looks cool, but if zombies are getting close enough for you to need to use your chainsaw, you’re probably already screwed. And I wouldn’t put too much faith in it: that chainsaw sounds pretty cheap. Maybe you could slice some butter with it, though. Check out the video below. Read more…

Dead Space’s Isaac Clarke Now Ready to Guard Your Desk

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 15, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

Try stealing my stapler NOW.

I’ve always loved the design of Isaac Clarke’s suit from Dead Space. It has a strong, iconic look to it that you don’t see very often. Maybe it’s just because he slightly resembles a cranky old grandpa of the Daft Punk guys… In any case, Sideshow Collectibles agrees on the awesomeness of Isaac Clark and is releasing a 16″ high statue of him, ready to take on whatever alien menace he might encounter next. Awesome Persona 3 Thanatos Figure Will Add Some Spark to Your Collection

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 14, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

If you’re a Persona fan, Bandai’s D-Arts series probably just made your day: take a look at this stellar figure of Thanatos from Persona 3. They did a great job replicating him in plastic, especially the coffins and chains above him. There’s not a whole lot of extra features listed for it, but when the figure looks this good, I’m sure I need them. If you’re looking to pre-order him, be sure to do so soon. Read more…
