Kotobukiya’s New Flash Figure is… Flashy!

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 20, 2012 in Comic Books, Hobbies and Collections

photo-m1

The other day, on their Facebook page, Kotobukiya revealed their latest New 52 ArtFX+ figure: The Flash! It looks to be in line with their other ArtFX+ figures, at 7.5 inches tall. It’s a pretty nice sculpt, nothing too fancy, but my first thought was “isn’t he supposed to be moving?” It seems the Flash would lend himself to a more dynamic pose easily. I know, I know, he has to match his pose with the rest of the figures. The Flash will be available in February 2013. More images below! Read more…

Defend Your Desk With Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 18, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Television

tyrion1

How would you like to have Game of Thrones-favorite, Tyrion Lannister, as a statue for your desk or display case? Dark Horse will soon be releasing a 10-inch figure of “the Imp” on February 20th featuring Tyrion in his ‘battle pose’ as he leads the defense of King’s Landing. While it’s great to see a model of Tyrion, it still looks a little off in the face to me. Perhaps I’m just spoiled by Hot Toy’s face sculpting! Tyrion Lannister will retail for $199.99 and can be pre-ordered here. Read more…

Looking for something to add that extra ‘oomph’ to your Angry Birds gameplay on PC? I know, I know, don’t look at me like that. Sure, it’s Angry Birds, but the real story here is ingenuity: Andrew Spitz and Hideaki Matsui worked together to create a fully-functioning electronic slingshot for the popular game. If there was ever a project that needed to be on Kickstarter, this is it. Check out the video detailing the device after the break. Read more…

Flickr user _Tiler has been getting some attention recently, and rightly so: his small LEGO models, while made of only a few parts, have a striking amount of detail and character! Ranging in subjects from The Dark Knight Rises, Blade Runner, and The Fifth Element, I’d hope LEGO would take note of these, as they’d make great sets, especially as stocking stuffers or the like. How much do you like your cool and unique art installations? What if they’re LEGO-inspired? As part of LEGO’s Festival of Play event, the brick-building company has been bringing life-size LEGO trees and flowers to various locations around Australia to give people the experience of living in a LEGO world. The latest stop, early this month, was in Broken Hills and suffice to say, it offered up some great photographs! I hope LEGO expands this to other areas of the world as well, as this is a very cool idea. Read more…

danboard plastic model kit

If you aren’t familiar with Danboard he’s a cardboard action figure who is based on an issue of the Yotsuba&! manga. The original model kit that became popular in Japan was produced by Revoltech, but this newest kit caught my eye because it’s made out of plastic! What;s nice about this new kit is that the cover features an illustration by the japanese artist Hidetaka Tenjin who is famous for his beloved illustrations of Mobile Suit Gundam and Macross. Shown below are a number of examples from Japan of local hobbyists who had fun with this kit: Read more…

A Gun for Big Damn Heroes

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 22, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Television

Firefly Pistol replica

Firefly & Serenity fans, feast your eyes on this 1:1 scale, screen-accurate reproduction of Malcom Reynolds’ sidearm! Just how accurate is it? The prop is crafted from the same mold of the stunt gun carried by Nathan Fillion himself while on set. That being the case, no it doesn’t fire real bullets, and that’s probably a good thing. On the other hand, this polystone prop makes for a great display piece, and would look great in the hands of any Browncoast cosplayer, or even a Steampunk enthusiast. It has that lovely antique-brass paint that lends itself so well to that aesthetic. At just $80, it’s an affordable addition to any fans arsenal, and although it’s currently sold out, ThinkGeek should have more in stock any day now. If you want, you can sign up to have them notify you as soon as they’re in stock by clicking here.

Fully Functional LEGO RC Land Rover

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 21, 2012 in Design, Hobbies and Collections

LEGO CUUSOO, where were you my whole life? I may not get the chance to build that many LEGO sets these days, but I can always count on others to provide innovative new designs worth checking out. Recently, a LEGO CUUSOO user Sheepo submitted this slick design for a fully functional remote-controlled LEGO Land Rover Defender 110. It’s got everything you’d expect —  doors that open and close, full suspension, working motor, and even a removable chassis. I cant imagine how much they’d charge for the set if it were to actually be approved for full production, but if the model strikes you fancy, head over to LEGO CUUSOO and let them know. The sooner it hits 10,000 supporters, the sooner LEGO will actually consider licensing it.

Loki Figure By Hot Toys Sure to Make Women Swoon, Men Desire His Helmet

Posted by Ben Huber on May 20, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections

loki1

You gotta admit, that helmet is pretty nifty – and given Loki’s huge female fanbase, I’m going to guess that a lot of them will be looking at picking this amazing figure: Hot Toys has returned to their Avengers line with another super-detailed model, this time of Loki. Once again, the face is the star here, with an incredible attention to detail. The eyes, though, those piercing eyes! They follow me around the room, it’s slightly unnerving. Still, if you’re a Loki fan or know one, you can pre-order him now for $219.99 for when he releases in December later this year. Read more…

Star Trek Kre-O Figures Get a Facelift

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 10, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

Star Trek Kre-O Collider Teaser

Earlier today, Collider posted the latest teaser for Hasbro’s Star Trek Kre-O playsets to be released next year. No doubt, their release will be timed to help promote the release of J.J. Abram’s Star Trek 2, set to hit theaters in May 2013. While this new teaser pic is far more detailed than the concept image that had been floating around the next since February (see below), I can’t help but feel that Kirk’s chiseled jaw actually resembles a young Shatner more than Pine. Obviously that’s not suppose to be the case as the figures are wearing the sporty active wear uniforms seen in the recent film. Nevertheless, these are looking better and better and I can’t wait to see what they come up with when the sets are ready for store shelves next year.

Building Your Very Own LEGO Armory

Posted by Tim Sheehy on May 7, 2012 in Design, Hobbies and Collections

Lego Heavy Weapons

I’m not entirely sure I’m responsible enough to own any real firearms, but I think I could settle for LEGO replicas. Introducing LEGO Heavy Weapons: Build Working Replicas of Four of the World’s Most Impressive Guns. Its 17-year-old author, Jack Streat, delivers a complete guide to building 1:1 scale replicas of several well-known firearms, such as a SPAS shotgun, or Desert Eagle handgun with realistic built-in blow-back. Despite the subtitle’s claim of allowing you to build “working” replicas, I seriously doubt you’ll ever get one of these to fire live ammunition. At least, I hope so. Also, isn’t it terrifying to know there’s a 17-year-old kid out there who can design a replica AKS-74U assault rifle using LEGO bricks?
