Trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in LEGO Form

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 23, 2013 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

legohobbit

Yes, the Brotherhood Workshop is at it again! They have LEGO-fied another movie trailer, and it’s more Lord of the Rings. This time it’s the recent trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which they have spent two months making. There’s a great mix of LEGO and visual effects here, but mostly it’s just fun to see little LEGO figures waddle across large landscapes. That, and that LEGO Smaug is pretty freaking awesome. If only the official LEGO model would be so detailed and impressive! Watch the video below and then grab you minifigures and reenact it yourself. Read more…

Yes, This Is a Life-Size Skeletor Bust

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 18, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

skeletorbust

And yes, it is awesome. Pop Culture Shock Collectibles has revealed their latest bust, Skeletor, from Masters of the Universe. Did you ever know you needed this? If you’re ready to own a life-size bust of the lord of destruction, you might want to prepare your poor wallet: retail price is $675. So while that’s not something I’ll be pre-ordering anytime soon, if you’re up for the adventure, the pre-order period opens at 3pm on August 26th. Then again, there is an option for a version with LED eyes, so at night he can keep watch over you with his evil red gaze. Pleasant! Read more…

The Master Sword Forged

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 9, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

zeldas_sword

Tony Swatton keeps on forging, and his latest piece is the Master Sword from The Legend of Zelda. It’s possibly his nicest-looking blade yet, and certainly the best Master Sword  replica I’ve seen – especially since it can actually cut things (mostly). They of course take it out and test it, swing it at various jars filled with gems and soda bottles that vaguely resemble potions. This is all well and good, but Tony keeps referring to it as “Zelda’s Master Sword” which is either hilarious or annoying depending on your personality.  Read more…

Destroying Tiny Walls: Nendoroid Colossal Titan

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 5, 2013 in Anime, Hobbies and Collections

titan1

Attack on Titan has been a runaway success of an anime, so thus there must be merchandising opportunities everywhere. However, none might be as cute or pudgy as this one: a Nendoroid figure of the Colossal Titan. While a Colossal Titan Nendoroid is pretty cool on its own, it also comes with a model of the wall and surrounding houses, along with two smaller titans and an assortment of humans to be devoured. You also get a steam effect piece as well – this model really has it all. You can now pre-order one so you’ll have your name in for the December release date. Read more…

Star Wars The Black Series Greedo Figure, Looking Good!

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 15, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

greedo1

Greedo arrives! Hasbro’s The Black Series of Star Wars figures has been fairly impressive. They’re 6-inch scale figures of everyone’s favorites from the various films. Wave 1 featured Luke, R2-D2, Darth Maul, and a Sandtrooper. Wave 2 seems to feature Boba Fett (which is debuting at SDCC) and Han Solo, but Greedo won’t arrive till wave 3. If you’re looking for Star Wars figures that look good but don’t break the budget, these are a pretty solid bet. I also like the minimalist packaging for the figures as well. Here’s a Massive WWII LEGO Beach Attack Display

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 14, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

lego_wwii

You know, just a simple, nonchalant statement: “here it is!” This is an amazing model by Daniel Siskind, who has recreated a beach storming scene entirely from LEGO bricks. Featuring numerous little details – and also, the BIG details – this piece is seriously impressive. Daniel mentions that several other people had to help him with it since it got so big. The most stunning part? He plans on doubling its size later this year. Check out the video below for a closer look at this massive undertaking as well as hearing Daniel speak more about the work behind it. Read more…

If Your Grew Up with the Terran Trade Authority Books You Must Watch This Video

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jul 11, 2013 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

Terran Trade Authority fan video

If you were a child of the late 70s chances are that you may have owned at least one or two books in the Terran Trade Authority series. These coffee-table books were crammed with amazing spaceship art from the Star Wars era all illustrated with airbrushing and too much detail! This amazing fan video shown below shows a 3D take on this beloved classic. Sadly I was reading that the books are out of print and there are no plans to republish them. Read more…

Tony Swatton Forges an Orcish Battleaxe From Skyrim

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 8, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

battleaxe

Tony Swatton keeps on making crazy reproductions of awesome weapons. His latest project? An orcish battleaxe from Skyrim. It looks like it was lifted right out of the game, and they (of course) test it out at the end and it does plenty of damage. It’s really neat to see somebody creating all these weapons and tools professionally. Too bad we can’t get one, though! Anyway, just last week, he also made the Sword of Omens from Thundercats, and Cloud’s buster sword prior to that! Check out the video below. Read more…

A Wild LEGO Steampunk Walking Machine

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 22, 2013 in Design, Hobbies and Collections

legowalkingship

Jason Allemann has been making some crazy stuff – and all out of LEGO. His latest piece combines cool looks along with some clever functionality: a Steampunk Walking Ship, a boat made for land. Using a remote control and LEGO motors, it crawls its way across the ground ready to deliver or unload cargo. Jason says it’s inspired by Theo Jansen’s Strandbeest, and I can definitely see the resemblance. In the YouTube video, he also provides instructions on how to make the contraption yourself – provided you have the right parts. Check it out below! Read more…

New Massive Sydney Opera House LEGO Set Revealed

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 17, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

9044558069_3cd2bf7701

It seems like every other week LEGO is upping the ante and revealing a huge new model. This time around is a gorgeous rendition of the Sydney Opera House. It’s nearly a foot tall, 25 inches wide and 15 inches deep, and features 2,989 pieces. They did a good job capturing the sloped and curved shape of the whole building, and their press release even brags about having a bunch of new colored pieces and baseplates. I suppose if you’re a die-hard collector that matters! If you want it though, you’ll have to wait until September when it releases for $320. Check out more images and a creator video below! Mache’s Amazing Custom Iron Man Nike MAGs

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 10, 2013 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

im3

Custom shoes are apparently really big, but given that I hardly ever dip my toes in those waters, I usually don’t get a glimpse of that world until something surfaces – like these fantastic custom Nike MAGs, inspired by Iron Man. Looking closer to Iron Man’s actual boots than sneakers, these custom jobs by Mache light up at both the base and the buckle. Since each of his customs are completely unique, sadly there’s no way to get these. If you’re willing to drop some serious cash, though, you could try ordering your own. Check out more images below! Let’s Make a Klingon Bat’leth

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 3, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

batleth

I know a lot of people who’d love to own, or do own, movie props. But I know even fewer that will actually make their own. That’s where movie prop-maker Tony Swatton comes in, who has been making real-life versions of movie and video game weapons for a while now. Batarangs, Minecraft swords, and blades from Game of Thrones are just some of the neat pieces he’s done, but his latest is massive: a Klingon Bat’leth. It’s just as sharp as a real one would be, and he puts on extra protection just to make sure he doesn’t slice his own head off. Now that’s dedication! Read more…

LEGO Builds Largest Model Ever: A Life-Size X-Wing

Posted by Ben Huber on May 25, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

8795381877_6e3ced1054_b

Yes, the biggest LEGO model ever made. LEGO really went all-out here, and put together an absolutely massive, 44 foot wingspan, 11 foot height, 5 million brick model. It took 32 LEGO Master Builders over 17,000 hours to complete. And it’s now in Times Square for everyone to see (and even sit in!). LEGO hasn’t said how long the model will be in Times Square (only that “this summer” it will be moved to LEGOLAND California), but I assume it will at least be there till May 29th for the premier of The Yoda Chronicles. I imagine this is the coolest thing ever for many kids, so I hope this stays around for a while. Check out more images below and also read The Brothers Brick write-up of the effort that went into building it! Read more…

ThreeA Portal 2 Figures of Atlas and P-Body on the Way

Posted by Ben Huber on May 18, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

portal2_1

ThreeA has some skilled people working there. I love the character and design put into their figures and models, but their recent penchant for picking up licenses is really neat too. Next up? Atlas and P-Body from Portal 2! These two will be available for an unknown amount sometime this month on the Bambaland store. As soon as the pre-orders go up you’ll probably want to rush in and claim a pair for yourself, because these typically go very fast. Check out some more images below of these excellent 1:6th scale figures. Read more…

LEGO Lord of the Rings Tower of Orthanc Revealed

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 28, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

10237_IN_MA.indd

LEGO has long done the Ultimate Collector’s Series for Star Wars, and the Modular series of city buildings, but Lord of the Rings hasn’t gotten anything quite so elaborate – until now. The Tower of Orthanc will be the largest LEGO Lord of the Rings model to date, featuring Saruman’s imposing dwelling as well as an eagle and an Ent! I appreciate that the Ent is made out of bricks and not a pre-molded piece. This massive set will run you $200 and is arriving in July of this year. It’s just over 28 inches high and contains 2,359 pieces. Check out more images below! Read more…

Well if so, I have just the figure for you: Kotobukiya has put up their ARTFX version of the Man of Steel himself for pre-order. It’ll be arriving in August and runs $119.99. Check out the detail on that suit! The cloth cape is also poseable so you can make it look like Superman just dove into battle. LEGO Space Kraken Eats Star Destroyer

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 15, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

8512534670_a16f27ff6e_b

Not sure how often I’ll get to write that headline!

Iain Heath has put together a massively impressive LEGO model of a Space Kraken taking down the Super Star Destroyer. The SSD has a bit of a reputation in the LEGO community as a big, boring, grey model, so Iain took matters into his own hands and spruced it up with a big splash of color. It was on display at the Emerald City Comicon this year and has now moved to its new resting place at Tableau Software in Seattle. Really impressive work! Read more…

LEGO Castle Grayskull is Amazing

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

8617856741

Once again, LEGO fans prove their mettle in fantastic ways: David Frank has put together a LEGO version of the classic toy Castle Grayskull from Masters of the Universe. It’s delightfully chunky-looking and captures the spirit of the original perfectly. It has all the internals as well, and is leaving me wondering how he accomplished some of those details. Great job with hiding the studs, too! Take a look at some more images of the castle below the jump, and then try not to pull out that bin of LEGO bricks you have stashed in the attic. Read more…

Real Action Heroes Link Figure Up for Pre-Order

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

link3

Did you miss on the Figma Link figure last year? And now you want something just as cool? Medicom is releasing a Link figure as part of their Real Action Heroes line, featuring real cloth clothing and he stands nearly a foot high in size. Really impressive work! The price tag is also pretty impressive, at ¥19,800 (a little over $200). But it’s certainly one of the best Link figures out there, and will be a great centerpiece to any setup. If you’re ready to plop down the cash, Amiami is (of this writing) still taking pre-orders and Otacute’s will open soon. Happy hunting! Read more…

LEGO Bionicle Models Play Music for Your Entertainment

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2013 in Hobbies and Collections

legoband

YouTube user Opificio Sonico put together a really cool video recently, showing off his LEGO Bionicle models that are hooked up to a collection of motors and an Arduino Uno board. Their purpose? To help create some pretty awesome music. Partnered with the Clavia Nordbeat app for iPad, the models tap out the rhythms delivered via electronic signal. It’s a pretty neat usage of the larger LEGO Technic models and gives the impression of a little band jamming away on the desk. I fully anticipate LEGOs to be making all of our music in the future. 400,000 Bricks Went Into This Massive LEGO Hogwarts

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 4, 2013 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

set-72157632858317817

LEGO fan Alice Finch embarked on quite the quest: to build all of Hogwarts. About 18 months and 400,000 bricks later, she finally finished it, and it’s been collecting awards and recognition ever since. It was actually first shown at BrickCon 2012 in October, but her collection of high-quality pictures of the entire model haven’t been revealed until now. And wow, what is there to say? It’s absolutely stunning and one of the most complex and impressive LEGO builds I’ve seen. Each side of it reaches nearly 13 feet long, and each inch is filled with tons of little details. The Brothers Brick has a great interview with Alice here, and check out her huge collection of images on her Flickr page! I’ve included a few below. Read more…
