Kirk and Scotty Join DST’s Latest Star Trek: The Original Series Action Figures

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 30, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

DST Series 5 Star Trek: TOS Kirk in green

Diamond Select recently announced the latest individual additions to their “”Series 5” Star Trek: The Original Series action figure line. This time around, Kirk sports his seemingly comfortable season 3 Green Dress shirt –I’ve always suspected it was a result of Shatner complaining about the standard tunics being way too stuffy. He’ll be joined by Scotty, whom I believe was previously released as part of a Spock/Scotty two-pack, and a random Romulan officer, all of which should retail for about $15.99 each. Read more…

Star Wars R2-D2 Seikai no Post Collection

A long time ago — well it was really really only a few years ago in 2007 that the post office started decorating postboxes across America by making them cosplay as R2-D2. And it was a cool event and then we thought it was all over, however Heart Art Collection in Japan has decided to make a collectors edition Star Wars R2-D2 Seikai no Post Collection model to celebrate that magical moment. And best of all this isn’t just a model but it also doubles as a piggy bank as well.

The 5 Best XKCD Prank Strips

Posted by Gia Manry on Jun 26, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections

xkcd
Everyone loves Creative Commons-shareable webcomic XKCD, whether they’re geeks, nerds, or pretending to be one of them because they acknowledge that geeks and nerds now rule the earth. My personal favorite category of strips, however, are the pranks that the nameless characters of XKCD conduct upon an unsuspecting public. Here are five of the best prank strips. Read more…

Melt Your Friends Faces With Your Very Own Ark of the Covenant

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 24, 2010 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

Ark of the Covenant 1

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for Raiders of the Lost Ark, after all, it was the film that introduced us all to one of the most beloved action heroes of all time. I have to admit, it’s been some time since I’ve seen the film but several of the scenes have stuck with me to this day. Of course, there was the swapping of the golden idol for a bag of sand, and the pit of snakes, but more than anything, the image of a nazi’s face melting upon gazing at the contents of one very swank looking ark.  It might not be the full-sized model, but this 1/4th scale replica of the Ark of the Covenant looks just as swank as the prop from the film. It’s a bit expensive, coming in at a hefty $249.99, but the details on the ark itself are immaculate. Sideshow Collectibles started taking pre-orders today through their official newsletter, but I can only imagine that they’ll be opening the pre-orders up to everyone else in due time. You’ll want to keep an eye on their website for additional information. In the meantime, you can sign up for the newsletter here.

Because Even Samurai Need Umbrellas

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 22, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections

It might not be the classiest umbrella I’ve ever seen, but it’s certainly one of the coolest. This samurai “busho” umbrella features a designed based on the armor and weapon carried by Kanetsugu Naoe, a famous samurai during Japan’s often romanticized Sengoku era. As you can see from in picture above, the Umbrella’s handle is actually a replica of the hilt from Kanetsugu’s blade and the umbrella itself is lined with his family crest. Personally, I could probably see myself taking one of these along with me to Baltimore next month. I usually attend Otakon each year, and I can’t remember a time when it hasn’t rained for at least one day. If you’re interested in picking one of these up, you can head over J-List and order one for roughly $34  plus shipping. Read more…

The Most Expensive Dustbuster That You’ll Ever Own

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 21, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

Star Trek TNG Dustbuster Hand Phaser Prop Replica

Actually that’s not a actual dustbuster but in fact a replica of phaser from Star Trek: The Next Generation. While the show had a loyal fan base that’s still active till this day the industrial design of the series wasn’t always that imaginative and had many trappings of the decade. So of course in the politically correct depiction of the future a phaser couldn’t look like a good old fashioned handgun, and thus the phasers from the series earned their infamous dustbuster monikers. Of course this is no mere dustbuster but a collectable prop which will set you back about $500.

Japanese Star Trek: The Next Generation Action Figures

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 19, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

Japanese Data Figure

Ever wonder what Data would look like if he were built in Japan? Well, now we know thanks to Dragon Models’ upcoming line of Star Trek: The Next Generation 1/6th scale action figures. The android is joined by Captain Picard and what appears to be Lieutenant Worf circa season 3 — you can obviously tell by the uniform and hair.  To be honest, I’m not loving what they did with Worf, but they managed to capture Sir Patrick Stewart’s visage quite nicely. As for Data himself? Well, the tilt of his head was a nice touch. Read more…

Is the Pen Mightier Than the Light Saber?

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 17, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Star Wars Light Saber Hikaru Ballpoint Pen

The coolest thing about about the Star Wars Light Saber Hikaru Ballpoint Pen is that not only does it light up — but the possibles for office antics are endless! Although my fear that most fanboys will afraid to embrace their inner Jedi and instead leave these magical writing instruments in their original packaging where no doubt they’ll sadly catch dust on a bookshelf.

Lord Of The Rings Plushes

I really feel for Lord Of The Rings, here they are waiting for the Hobbit film to come out in 2012 and the director then quits! That means that if Tolkien fanboys (and fangurls!) are lucky they will only have waited nine years since The Return of the King came out in 2003. Well if it’s any consolation prize sad Rings enthusiasts can cuddle up with these official Lord of the Rings plushies which are now available for pre-order: Included are Frodo, Gandalf, Legolas and Orc. Super Shogun Stormtrooper is Super Huge

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 15, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

Super Shogun Stormtrooper

This is probably the largest stormtrooper toy I’ve ever seeen. At 24 inches, Super7’s two-foot-tall take on the Imperial stormtrooper comes complete with a spring loaded rocket propelled fist, and wheels. Why it would even need those is beyond me, but I’m not one to complain about the extras. Still, it’s not like it really needed them. It’s a two foot tall storm trooper wielding an E-11 blaster rifle, and that’s more than enough reason to want one if you ask me. Here’s the kicker, though — it’ll cost you about $299. Crazy, right? At least the details are pretty stunning up close. If you’re still willing to empty your wallet or bank account, you can order one online via the Super7 website. For more info on the toy itself, check out the mini-site here. Read more…

Medicom’s Kirk & Uhura Be@rbricks

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 11, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Trek

Kirk and Uhura Be@rbricks

Medicom’s at it again with their ever-so-popular Be@rbrick line — this time, featuring characters from Star Trek’s original series. While I’m sure most of you were probably hoping to see Spock and McCoy along for the ride, Kirk’s instead joined by Uhura. A bit of a surprise, but definitely nothing to complain about. Being sold as a set, they’re current listed for 2604 yen, which comes out to about $28 USD. No word on when they’ll be available for order, though I’m sure we’ll end up seeing them for order via Hobby Link Japan in no time.

Optimus Prime Meets Guan Yu, the Chinese God of War

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 8, 2010 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

Guan Yu Transformer

Some of you might recognize the man above as Guan Yu, the 3rd century General of Shu, who was later deitized as the god of war, and brotherhood. However, I’m sure most of you noticed that he looks an awful lot like a certain Autobot — and not just any Autobot, but the big man himself, Optimus Prime.  Recently, some students at China’s Central Academy Of Fine Arts claim to have created this 9.7 meter monster out parts from an an old truck, costing them roughly $4,500 USD. Supposedly, the only original parts are the face and blade. While I have my doubts, you have to admit that it still looks pretty cool. Now if only someone made a toy out of this, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Read more…

A Stormtrooper Bust That Feeds On Rebel Brains

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 8, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Horror, Star Wars

 GE80078lg

Awhile back, Del Rey published the novel Star Wars: Death Troopers, and ever since I’ve been wanting to sit down and read it. The concept sounds absolutely fantastic, take Star Wars and mix in a bit of good old fashion horror — how could you go wrong? I’ll be honest, I’ve been holding out for the paperback which is due out in October, but after seeing this fantastic bust, I’m about ready to just give in and by a copy of the hardcover. The bust is actually a 1/6th scale model of the zombie Stormtrooper as depicted in the upcoming graphic novel, based on the book.  If you’re looking to obtain one of these bad boys, Entertainment Earth has them for about $75 and is currently taking preorders and will ship in November. Urusei Yatsura’s Lum Strikes a Pose

Bome Urusei Yatsura Lum figurine

I don’t want to brag but back in the day before all the new kids (who are no longer kids) discovered Ranma ½ I already knew who Rumiko Takahashi was because I had already fallen in love with Urusei Yatsura — which by the way I always felt was a much more humorous series. So when I set my eyes on this amazing sculpture of Lum needless to say I was quite smitten. I’m also impressed with the fact that this model comes in one version with green hair and another with magenta hair. This collectable figurine of Lum is designed by the ever so talented Bome who is a Japanese sculptor whose primary focus is the ladies of anime. Read more…

This Kawaii Panda Marches to a Different Drummer

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jun 7, 2010 in Hobbies and Collections, Tech

Animal Town Panda Speaker

It took me a bit of hunting to find the mysterious origins of this Animal Town Panda Speaker and it seems that he’s a character from a series of ultra cute stationery goodies from a company called Q-LiA. Although the flat graphic representations I’ve seen of him don’t quite have the same surrealistic magic of this speaker which has a sort of air balloon quality to him. And making him stranger yet when you plug your device (either an iPod, iPhone or CD/MP3 player) his red nose actually shines just like Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer. Read more…
