Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning DLC Dated

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 27, 2012 in Videogames

Lightning in Final Fantasy XIII-2

By now, it’s no secret that Final Fantasy XIII-2 leaves us with a cliff-hanger. It was announced a few months back that the story would continue via downloadable content, and that there were no plans for a Final Fantasy XIII-3 at this time. The first significant piece of DLC to expand the story featured former cast member Sazh Katzroy, and while it added a few casino games, it was much more of a side-story, and didn’t actually progress the plot. I’m hoping the latest piece of DLC to be announced, the much anticipated Lightning chapter, will do just that. According the Japanese gaming mag Dengenki PlayStation, that particular chapter be made available this May. Read more…

Watch Freddie W. Tell His Younger Self About Future Videogames

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self about the future of videogames, what would you mention? The improvement in graphics? Being able to play online with other people? Maybe the motion controllers? That’s what Freddie wants to warn his past self about – well, that, and also the plague of Just Dance. I didn’t realize that we lived in such a dark, terrible time for videogames.

The REAL Mass Effect 3 Ending

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 23, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Ok, maybe not, but who doesn’t want to see an Animal House version of the Mass Effect 3 ending? TuneIntoTheRock and some buddies realized after a night of revelry that this combination was one the world needed to see, and now it exists here. It’s quite funny, even for me as someone who isn’t a big Mass Effect fan. The little jab at the writers at the end is cute, but I think we’ve all had enough of that by now. Still, great video, TuneIntoTheRock!

Cringe Worthy Kinect Star Wars Trailer

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 21, 2012 in Star Wars, Videogames

While watching this trailer for Kinect Star Wars, a few choice words came to mind, but if I had to choose one, I think I’d just ask why. Of course, I think it’s pretty obvious why LucasArts and Microsoft have done this. They’ve said it themselves — they’re appealing to the lowest common denominator. Well, congratulations, mission accomplished. More embarrassing footage after the jump. Read more…

Square Enix Rewards Deadline Looms

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 21, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

Square Enix Rewards 2010

I’m sure some of you might already know about Square Enix and their annual rewards program, but for those of you who don’t, you’ll probably want to. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve opened a new game, only to pull out the disc, toss the box to the side and ignore the rest of its contents. I always justify it by thinking I don’t need a instruction manual, or that I couldn’t care less about some pre-formatted health warnings I’ve read a million times, but in doing so, I often miss that little sheet asking me to register the game. I know what you’re thinking — why bother? Find out why after the jump.

An Ys Fan-translation Hits Steam

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 20, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Ys: The Oath of Felghana

It’s a niche series, but I’ve always loved Falcom’s Ys saga. The series has been a staple of staple of the action role-playing genre for as long as I can remember with countless entries in the series, not to mention the numerous remakes or re-releases over the years. It’s not as popular outside of Japan, but niche as it is, Ys has some of the most dedicated fans I’ve ever seen, and Ys: The Oath in Felghana stands as testament to that.

Japan Teases its Latest Robot Wars Title

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 19, 2012 in Anime, Videogames

If you’re a fan of giant robot anime, this trailer might make you wet your pants. It features footage from 2nd Super Robot Wars Z Saisei, a PSP game that features characters and mechs from practically every giant robot series to grace Japanese airwaves is like an otaku’s dream come true. Unfortunately, despite having developed a countless number of these Super Robot War titles over the years, not a single one has been localized outside of Japan. Why? The trailer speaks for itself, check out the list of copyrights at the end. Now imagine the nightmare of trying to secure those rights for an international release. It’s a shame, but who knows, maybe it’ll be a possibility someday… maybe… probably not.

First Preview of The Walking Dead Game from Telltale Games

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 18, 2012 in Comic Books, Videogames

Here’s a short and sweet teaser trailer to promote the upcoming Walking Dead video game from Telltale Games. Not much happens in it, but it seems to be a pretty good indicator of the tone for the game – heavy and depressing. Which is fine by me, considering most recent adventure games deign towards the humorous end of things. A full trailer is supposed to come out Monday, so if you like what you see, watch Telltale’s site for all the details!

Expanding the Mass Effect 3 Experience

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 14, 2012 in Videogames

Mass Effect 3 Galaxy at War logo

If you’ve been following the site, it’s no secret that I’ve been looking forward to playing BioWare’s Mass Effect 3. Critics have praised the game and while some gamers have voiced concerns regarding everything from day-one paid downloadable content to the doctoring of stock, royalty free photography, I’m still enjoying my experience for the most part. I admit that I’m not a very social gamer but due to BioWare’s new interactive “Galaxy at War” system, you’re almost forced to deal with the multiplayer aspect just to improve your single-player campaign’s ending. Fortunately, there are a couple workarounds for those of you with an iOS device. More after the jump.

A Short Chaos Rings II Launch Trailer

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 14, 2012 in Videogames

Set for release later this week, Square Enix unveiled latest trailer for Chaos Rings II. As some of you may recall, Chaos Rings served as Square Enix’s first major title for the iOS and Android platforms, praised for delivering a fully-developed, traditional Japanese role-playing experience. Some reviewers have even cited it as one of the best titles the company has developed in recent years — though, I’m sure that’s open to debate. Read more…

If you’re a die-hard fan of Epic’s Gears of War, or just a fan of awesome looking props, you’ll want to feast your eyes on this 1:1 scale replica of snub pistol featured in Gears of War 3. Halo 4 Video Gives You a Look at the Updated Master Chief

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 11, 2012 in Videogames

halo

I’ll be honest, I’m pretty burnt out on the Halo series. It’s not Call of Duty levels of commercial milking yet, but I think I’m good for  my share of Spartan adventures. That said, it’s still a huge series and I bet a lot of you still want more, which is why we have a Halo 4 in the first place. This recently released video gives you a first look at Halo 4, as well as the developers in 343 Industries. Check out the full video after the break. Read more…

BioShock Infinite’s Heavy Hitters Are Terminator George Washington – Really

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 10, 2012 in Videogames

bioshock

Ever wanted to fight an evil, robotic version of George Washington with a gattling gun? No? Well, I have bad for you then about BioShock: Infinite. IGN recently released a short video featuring the “Big Daddies” of BioShock: Infinite, now called “Heavy Hitters.” Ken Levine tries to make them seem totally different in the interview, but come on guys, they’re this game’s version of Big Daddies. Not saying that the game doesn’t look amazing, though. Video after the jump! Read more…

Uniqlo x Metal Gear 25th Anniversary

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 8, 2012 in Design, Videogames

Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Uniqlo Shirts 1

If I’m going to buy overpriced Japanese t-shirts, there’s only one retailer I really trust — Uniqlo. Stylish, well-crafted, and comfortable to wear, their t-shirts will often catch your eye with with quirky prints or bright colors. In Japan, the retailer teamed up with Konami to release a line of Metal Gear-themed shirts celebrating the series’ 25th anniversary. I’d probably kill for a few of these designs, but seeing as their shirts usually retail for around $45 a piece at conventions, I’m not sure if I have the cash to spare. The shirts will be available this April, but I have no idea if you’ll be able to find them in any of the three Manhattan locations located in the US. You might have better luck at major anime conventions later this summer — otherwise, a trip to Japan might be your best bet. Check out more photos after the break. Read more…

Mass Effect’s Commander Shepard in Salt Art

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 6, 2012 in Hobbies and Collections, Videogames

To help commemorate tonight’s release of Mass Effect 3, I thought I’d post this interesting bit of fan art. Until today, I never knew salt was something people actually used for artistic purposes, but as you’ll see in this time-lapsed video, salt art can be quite impressive. No doubt it’s incredibly time consuming, but that doesn’t seem to be an issue for Bashir Sultani, the artist responsible for the piece. It actually took around two and a half hours for him to complete it, though I imagine someone who isn’t used to working with salt might have taken much longer. If you’re interested, he has entire YouTube channel dedicated to the art and it’s definitely worth checking out.

Assassin’s Creed III Takes on the American Revolution

asscreed

Ubisoft has officially revealed the first details for the next installment in the Assassin’s Creed series. While we had heard reliable rumors and rumblings of the setting being the American Revolution for while, this is the first time we’ve gotten hi-res official images. It’s part of the the promotion with Game Informer as their next cover story. Ubisoft has apparently been spending a good three years working on AC3, so it looks like they’re putting their best foot forward here. Read more…

Give Microsoft Flight a Spin

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 1, 2012 in Videogames

Microsoft Flight

Microsoft’s latest entry in their series of flight simulators, simply titled Microsoft Flight, is out and it’s free-to-play via its official website. There’s still the option of paying for premium content, with the option to purchase a plane of your own with just an exterior cam for just $7.99. A $14.99 deluxe package gives you the option of a cockpit view as well. As far as missions and such, the $19.99 Hawaiian Adventure Pack gives you free reign of the Hawaiian islands, with 20 new mission and additional challenges to keep you busy. It’s interesting to see how popular the free-to-play platform has become, and I have to wonder if piracy could be the cause. Is it really that more lucrative?

Doctor Who: the Inappropriately Titled Trailer

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Feb 27, 2012 in Dr. Who, Videogames

So here’s the latest trailer for BBC Worldwide and Supermassive Games’ upcoming adventure title, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock. BBC decided to label it “epic,” but I’m not so sure about that. It certainly features a lot of rotating environments, voice acting and running. The Doctor and River both make an appearance, voiced by Matt Smith and Alex Kingston respectively, and it will be the first Vita game to utilize the Unreal Engine, but that last bit is hardly anything to brag about. The engine has been around for awhile and it certainly showing its age. The game, set to release sometime next month, will be available via PlayStation Network for both the PlayStation Vita, and PS3.

Borderlands 2 Launch Date Trailer Features Too Much “Wub Wub”

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 25, 2012 in Videogames

borderlands2

Borderlands 2 looks like a pretty sweet game. In fact, this trailer did a good job of showing off the game – but there’s one little thing. I have no real problem with dubstep, but wow, is it just me or is it used in every game trailer these days? It’s getting really annoying, to be honest. There’s other music out there! At least they have a sense of humor about it, and have Claptrap dance awkwardly for your entertainment. Check out the trailer below for plenty of dubstep and extra guns. The game is out September 18th. Read more…
