Slammin’ Through Space & Time

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 24, 2012 in Dr. Who, Fandom

Gallifrey Timelords T-Shirt TeeFury

No, it isn’t a Doctor Who x Space Jam mash-up — I’d kill to hear one — instead, it’s the latest Doctor Who-themed shirt to hit TeeFury. With the team’s name emblazoned across the chest and a spiffy silhouette of what appears to be a sonic screwdriver-wielding David Tennant in place of the usual NBA logo, nobody will question your loyalty to our favorite team. Like most every shirt featured on TeeFury, it’ll only be available for the rest of the day and comes in both men and women’s sizes for only $10 plus shipping.

Game of Thrones Playmobil Trailer: GoT Never Looked So Adorable

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 21, 2012 in Fandom, Television

Is winter coming? Watch plastic bleed as HDMprojects on YouTube recreates the Game of Thrones Season 1 trailer with Playmobil figures in one of the cutest renditions of Game of Thrones I’ve seen in a while. It’s probably just because they’re all smiling the whole time – endearing, or just creepy? It’s also surprisingly accurate, all the way down to the lighting and environments. The real question is, though, would you re-watch the whole series like this? Read more…

Incredible Star Wars Diorama Also Plays Music

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 15, 2012 in Fandom, Star Wars

This is really impressive: to help promote The Phantom Menace’s 3D re-release in Germany, LEGO model creators Rene Hoffmeister and Lorenz Lnggrtnr made something amazing. An enormous diorama featuring 4 Star Wars settings (Hoth, Tatooine, Naboo, and the Death Star) and then hooked it up to a keyboard. The highest bricks rotate around the barrel and bump little sensors that then hit the correct key on the keyboard, thus playing the Main Theme of Star Wars. Watch the video above to see it in action! Wait, What Do Otaku Say?

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 14, 2012 in Fandom

I think the whole “Sh*t X Say” has been a little done by now. But sometimes one hits a little close to home. Many of us anime/manga/J-culture fans have gone through a “weeaboo” phase at point or another. Most grow out of it. Sometimes, you don’t — and that’s when you get “Sh*t Otaku Say.” Tofugu has put together a video compiling all the silly a ridiculous things otaku might say on a daily basis. It’s all tongue-in-cheek, so don’t take it too seriously. Read more…

How to Play Skyrim in Real Life

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 8, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

I think it’s a testament to Skyrim’s longevity that we’re still seeing so much fan-made material for the game, even long after its release. This recent video from YouTube user Timtimfed is very clever in its literal interpretation of Skyrim’s game mechanics. “Uninterrupted” indeed! Thankfully it doesn’t overstay its welcome like most fan videos. All that said, as cool as this video is, this is still my favorite Skyrim fan video. You’ll never guess why.

Advertising to the Undead: Walking Dead Mad Men

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 7, 2012 in Fandom, Television

What’s the best way to market to a target audience that only wants one thing? Brains are on the top of the undead’s list of “things I want,” so Don Draper and his cohorts have to figure out the best way to sell to this decaying group of potential customers. Of course, when zombies are involved, so is Rick Grimes. This funny little skit by BarelyPolitical combines two of the biggest TV series into one crazy amalgamation of death, marketing, and brains. And Hershel is spot-on!

Game of Thrones Minecraft World is Mighty Impressive

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 6, 2012 in Fandom

People make tons of crazy things in Minecraft. It’s one of those games where you can honestly make anything as long as you put your mind to it. Heck, people have made 8-bit computers in Minecraft. The latest creation catching the internet’s eye is a replication of important locations and lands from Game of Thrones within Minecraft. Best part is that you can visit this world on the creator’s Westeros server. Now you can finally walk through Winterfell for real! Well, mostly. Great work guys!

Nerdist Gets its Own YouTube Channel

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Apr 3, 2012 in Fandom

Nerdist Logo

The guys over at Nerdist may be famous for their fandom, but we’re not jealous. Sure, Hardwick and the gang happen to rub elbows with some of our favorite stars on a regular basis, even convinced BBC America to fund a series of television specials, but the truth is he’s as much of a nerd as the rest of us. With that in mind, I thought it’d be nice to mention the launch of their brand new YouTube channel. While I’m not sure if they plan on transitioning any of their podcasts to videocasts, I’m sure they’ll have plenty of interesting content to keep you entertained. Read more…

Easter Eggs Abound in 8-bit Google Maps

Posted by Ben Huber on Apr 1, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

ObVlU

By now you’ve probably heard of Google’s fantastic April Fools joke: 8-bit Google Maps. They partnered with Square Enix to Dragon Quest-ify the entirety of Google Maps, and even produced a fake commercial for a cartridge version of the software. Given that this is Google, though, they hid tons of little items and cute references within the joke (like the adorable pixel art, seen above, found at the Google HQ). Don’t want to go hunting yourself? Hit the jump for a few cool easter eggs! Read more…

Marketing Gotham City Has Got to be Rough

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 30, 2012 in Comic Books, Fandom

A scenic trip to Gotham City? Maybe scenic isn’t the best way to describe “getting robbed at gunpoint.” I don’t want to spoil the jokes here – Awkward Spaceship has put together a cute little video emulating the classic tourism commercial, only this time the city that’s begging for your visit is Gotham, a crime-riddled hive of scum and villainy. I certainly don’t recommend going to the opera and the walking out via the alleyway… Read more…

Wheaton & Pegg Trade Trekkie Tweets

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 29, 2012 in Fandom, Star Trek

Wil Wheaton & Simon Pegg

The guys over at TrekMovie recently chronicled an interesting, albeit hilarious conversation between Star Trek‘s Simon Pegg and Wil Wheaton via Twitter. As the story goes, Pegg was set to make an appearance on Conan promoting the upcoming video release of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Wheaton just happened to be shooting an episode of The Big Bang Theory on an adjacent set, and as soon as he caught wind that Pegg would be on the same lot, hilarity ensued. While the two ultimately didn’t meet, the tweets they shared are absolutely priceless. Check out the tweets after the jump, and if you want to hear more about Pegg’s visit with Conan O’Brien, click here.

Joe Vecchio has been working diligently to create a musical based on the romantic comedy manga Maison Ikkoku which was created by Rumiko Takahashi. When I first heard about this project I had my doubts, however at Anime Central in 2011 Joe managed to get a read through of his play for his fellow otaku. Clever Indiana Jones Posters for Your Office or Underground Temple

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

Raiders_header

I love Indiana Jones – it’s my favorite adventure film trilogy (shhhh!) and has some of the most recognizable, iconic imagery of any film. Maxime Pécourt realized that, and made three fantastic posters featuring all the various items and objects from the films, formed into the important relics that Jones went after. If you’re interested in these posters, you can check out Pécourt’s Society6 page. And his blog has more creative geek-related work on it as well, so take a look at that as well! Read more…

Watch Freddie W. Tell His Younger Self About Future Videogames

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 25, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

If you could go back in time and tell your younger self about the future of videogames, what would you mention? The improvement in graphics? Being able to play online with other people? Maybe the motion controllers? That’s what Freddie wants to warn his past self about – well, that, and also the plague of Just Dance. I didn’t realize that we lived in such a dark, terrible time for videogames.

Dr. Grordbort Presents: The Deadliest Game is the Coolest Student Film Yet

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 24, 2012 in Fandom

Dr. Grordbort has been around recently: new weapons, Team Fortress 2 promotional items, and now a student film! This nearly-7-minute video made by 11 students at Media Design School was officially endorsed by Weta Workshop and the creator of Dr. Grordbort, Greg Broadmore. It’s a very impressive piece and if this is who is doing our next generation of CGI, then we’re in good hands. Check it out! Read more…

The REAL Mass Effect 3 Ending

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 23, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Ok, maybe not, but who doesn’t want to see an Animal House version of the Mass Effect 3 ending? TuneIntoTheRock and some buddies realized after a night of revelry that this combination was one the world needed to see, and now it exists here. It’s quite funny, even for me as someone who isn’t a big Mass Effect fan. The little jab at the writers at the end is cute, but I think we’ve all had enough of that by now. Still, great video, TuneIntoTheRock!

An Ys Fan-translation Hits Steam

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 20, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Ys: The Oath of Felghana

It’s a niche series, but I’ve always loved Falcom’s Ys saga. The series has been a staple of staple of the action role-playing genre for as long as I can remember with countless entries in the series, not to mention the numerous remakes or re-releases over the years. It’s not as popular outside of Japan, but niche as it is, Ys has some of the most dedicated fans I’ve ever seen, and Ys: The Oath in Felghana stands as testament to that.

Threadless Tees on the Cheap

Threadless T-shirts

I have more t-shirts than any other type of clothing, and though I ultimately blame myself for being terrible with money, the internet isn’t helping matters. Sites like Threadless, TeeFury, Red Bubble, and so many more keep letting artists design these amazing graphic tees, and my bank account takes hit after hit. To make matters worse, Threadless is currently in the midst of a 48-hour sale, with almost every shirt marked down to $9.99 — they usually retail for twice that. Read more…

Mortal Kombat VS Street Fighter Flash Mob

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 17, 2012 in Fandom

I gotta say, flash mobs are interesting to me. They sit in a unique place in my heart, nestled right between ‘awkward’ and ‘awesome.’ On one hand I love that a bunch of people can just go out and do something, purely for fun. On the other, sometimes the hassling of other people looks like it might be a bit much. Here, a bunch of cosplayers dressing up as Street Fight and Mortal Kombat characters dance it out in New York. This one seems to be just a bunch of silly fun, and it left a smile on my face. Fun stuff!

Olly Moss Does the Original 3 Starter Pokémon (And More!)

Olly Moss has been one of my most-watched artists recently. Very few people have the consistently excellent output he’s had. You’ve probably seen his work floating throughout the ‘net at some point, especially his popular posters he’s done with Mondo. Just recently, he released four prints at once, the three original starter Pokémon and Pikachu, which sold out almost instantly. So why not take a look at some of his other work? Read more…

Alternate Walking Dead Intro Brings Smiles

Posted by Ben Huber on Mar 9, 2012 in Fandom, Television

walkin

Here’s a little fun for your day: an alternate Walking Dead intro created by tlunsford in the style of a 70s/80s TV intro. Trust me, it’s better than it sounds. Given that Walking Dead is more about the people than the zombies, something like this makes sense. Tlunsford jokes in the video description, “this new intro for season 2.5 seems to shine a light on the character dynamics of this ragtag group of zombie survivors and the impending daddy issues that Laurie’s pregnancy is sure to bring.” Oh, I’m willing to bet you’re closer to the truth than you think, buddy. Star Trek Drinking Game? Yes, Please

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Mar 7, 2012 in Fandom, Star Trek

Kirk and Khan drinking

A Star Trek drinking game? Why not, someone had to do it. Truth be told, there are a few episodes seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation I wouldn’t care to sit through unless I had some drinks in me. It’s been years since I first stumbled across Beer Trek, a site dedicated to creating the ultimate Star Trek drinking game. When I say dedicated, of course, I use the term rather loosely. It’s more of a compendium of rules for series, characters, situations, etc. Trying to memorize all of them would be fruitless and trying to follow them could lead to some serious alcohol poisoning.
