Indiana Jones Theme Sung A Cappella

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 23, 2012 in Fandom

How else do you need to start your week than with some crazy bloke singing the Indiana Jones theme? What if it’s well done? And what if it’s 62 tracks combined to make one full-sounding vocal piece? Well, you’d have this. I think we honestly need vocal versions of every pop culture song. And that’s what the internet is for.

In Memory of Those in Murdered in Colorado

Posted by Michael Pinto on Jul 20, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

Denver Shooting

By now you’ve heard it all, so I won’t recap the story. My heart goes out to the family and friends of those who were murdered in Denver last night. The opening night of a film is an event that many fans look ahead to for months on end, and for someone to exploit this is a very depressing thought. In the days ahead many folks in media will focus on the madman that did this and his motives, but I’d ask that everyone think of those who are the victims of this crime.

Batman Has a Hard Time With Faces

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 20, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

You’ve just got to give him a break, crimefighting can take a lot out of you. Although I would think recognizing faces is an important part of being the “world’s greatest detective” and all that. Anyway, College Humor has done it again and made a high production-value parody of The Dark Knight that’s also funny. Speaking of the Dark Knight, how many of you went to go see The Dark Knight Rises already? If not, I bet you’ve got some plans this weekend.

Neil deGrasse Tyson Declares Star Trek’s Enterprise the Best Starship Ever

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 20, 2012 in Fandom, Star Trek

Here a fantastic little video to start your weekend: at San Diego Comic-Con last week, the annual Starship Smackdown was in full swing. All of the starship experts and fans were debating the best starship, when a new challenger stepped up to the plate, and renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson took the mic and delivered the coolest and most passionate argument in favor of Star Trek’s Enterprise I’ve ever heard. I think we might just have a winner!

After much silence they have opened it up and people are flocking to it! If you’d like to try it out yourself, head over to their site and download the mod and visit their server.

Want to wear the proud lion of the Lannisters? Or maybe sport the sharps antlers of the Baratheons? Society6 user Vanadium has created some very bold designs made to look like sports team logos, but featuring the various houses from the series A Song of Ice and Fire (aka Game of Thrones). They’re nicely done and look excellent on the various shirts available – these will definitely stand out in any t-shirt collection! Check out all the designs on his page! Read more…

Making Toast in Slow-Motion Must Be Rough on Max Payne

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 1, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Did you enjoy the latest Rockstar game, Max Payne 3? I found the design and style of the game very cool (although I miss that stronger film noir styling). But with all that slow-motion and bullets flying everywhere, you have to wonder when Max finds time to breathe. What’s his daily life like? Timtimfed avoids all the usual ‘Payne’ word puns and jumps right into (literally) Max’s daily life. Watering the garden while diving in slow motion? Sure, it makes sense… right?

Ghost in the Shoes: Tachikoma Sneakers From Reebok

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 1, 2012 in Anime, Fandom

main3_02

Looking for something to show off your love for Ghost in the Shell, all the time? Why not sneakers? Reebok has teamed up with MegaHouse to created a set of limited edition sneakers themed after the Tachikoma from Ghost in the Shell. They actually look pretty slick, and definitely evoke the feeling of the Tachikoma without literally making the shoes resemble the AI units. You better get ready to hunt if you want them, though: only 500 will be made. That’s a collector’s item right there. More images after the jump! Read more…

Game of Thrones Attack Ads Are Clever – and Too Close to Real Life

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 22, 2012 in Fandom, Television

I think I echo most people’s sentiments when I say I hate political attack ads. However, these are just fantastic: Mother Jones Video on YouTube has created three short attacks ads that could’ve spawned from the Game of Thrones universe. One attacking Daenerys, one for Robb Stark, and one for Joffrey. There are minor spoilers for events in the second book/second season but nothing too deliberate. Watch the Joffery ad above, then check out Dany and Robb after the jump. Read more…

Pikachu Is On Acid

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 22, 2012 in Fandom

Yes, this is the most bizarre video I’ve seen this week. It’s also very, very well animated. It’s a little NSFW too, unless your job approves of Pokemon on acid (wish I could work there). High5Toons has done a great job showing what would happen if we took the Pokemon’s move’s names literally. And really, the image of Pikachu rubbing a balloon on his head to generate a static charge had me laughing. That’s just clever. Anyway, on with the Pokemon acid-trip!

Saving the Lars Homestead

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 20, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

I’m surprised it was still standing after all these years, but recently some fans took it upon themselves to raise the money necessary to restore the Lars Homestead — Luke’s home which he shared with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru in Episode IV A New Hope. It’s amazing to think what fans can accomplish when they set their mind to it. As you can see from the clip above, it wasn’t an easy task, but after battling with the blistering heat of the North African desert, they finally managed to finish the job on the igloo and as you can see from the end of the video and the photo below, they might have made it look too good. Given the harsh nature of the environment, that might not last for long, however. I’m just glad fans still exist who will be willing to preserve such a historic location. For more info, check out the project homepage here.

LEGO Inception Collects Bricks and Dreams Into One Excellent Video

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 15, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

After watching this video, I really want some Inception LEGO sets. Especially if you could rotate the famous hallway around to best replicate the bizarre gravity changes? You know you’d buy it. Or an exploding snow hospital building. Ok, I shouldn’t get carried away. This CGI LEGO trailer for Inception made by a cool bunch of people at VFX is pretty fun, and it has a few clever LEGO jokes in there too. I’m enjoying this recent resurgence in LEGO-themed videos because it really gets my creative juices going!

Red Letter Media Has a Few Questions for Damon Lindelof

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 15, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

I’m going to guess most of you have probably check out Prometheus by now, and you’ve probably taken in the beautiful scenery, amazing sets, and simply awesome world Ridley Scott created on-screen. You’ve also probably got enough questions to choke a small animal, because Damon Lindelof’s vague script detracts from all the good elements in the film. Red Letter Media, the always hilarious bunch of folks who made the incredible 90-minute Star Wars prequel reviews, starring the creepy murderer Plinkett, have returned to ask a few questions about Prometheus’ story. Mike and Jay, from the Half in the Bag series, usually do insightful and dorky movie reviews, but it seems Prometheus has taken its toll on their brains. Check out the brain-melting question video above, then watch their full review here.

Joel McHale Makes Fun of His Job in Prometheus Parody

Posted by Ben Huber on Jun 10, 2012 in Cinema, Fandom

You remember the ‘David’ viral videos for Prometheus? Telling you all the features of the wonderful android known as David? Well, here’s a little parody video featuring Joel McHale (from The Soup and Community) making fun of his own job and other clip show hosts’ jobs. It’s kind of clever and makes me wonder if many people really did catch on to the viral promotions for Prometheus – as in, will we see people continue to talk about them in the future? Still, I’ll take it anyway, as I will use any opportunity to bring up Ryan Seacrest jokes… and this video has them.

Redshirts Audiobook Feat. Wil Wheaton

Posted by Tim Sheehy on Jun 7, 2012 in Fandom, Star Trek

Redshirts cover (small)

If you’ve ever watched an episode of Star Trek and found yourself wondering why anyone would ever agree to be on an away team, let alone wear a red uniform, then this book is for you. Author John Scalzi does a fantastic job of parodying the genre we’ve all grown to love with his latest novel Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas. While it can’t outright label itself a Trek novel, the inspiration for the novel remains apparent throughout, and Scalzi manages to keep the novel entertaining by referencing everything you’d expect from such a novel — everything from away team selection, comic conventions, ridiculous aliens, and even the convoluted rules surrounding time travel.  Furthermore, the audiobook edition is read by none other than Wesley Crusher himself, Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Wil Wheaton. His narration is spot on, so don’t expect to nod off while listening. Both the novel and audiobook should be available at your local book store, or amazon.com, however you can also pick up the audiobook  via Audible.com.

New York Comic Con Finds One Last Way to Humiliate Otaku

Posted by Michael Pinto on May 30, 2012 in Anime, Comic Books, Fandom

konata from lucky star

New York Comic Con just announced that they will no longer have a side show which was called the New York Anime Festival. And adding insult to injury their press release no longer refers to cosplay, but instead uses the mundane term “costume contest”. It’s been hard watching what’s happened to the show over the last few years — but you just get the feeling that New York Comic Con is embarrassed by anime. Read more…

Skyrim Online Mod Improving, Kill Mudcrabs With Friends

Posted by Ben Huber on May 19, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

While an Elder Scrolls MMO has already been announced, many people just want co-op Skyrim. Thankfully, as with previous Elder Scrolls games, the modding community is stepping up and creating exactly that. While it’s still buggy and imperfect, you and your buddies can hop around in your Skyrim world and explore a bit. The team promises to continue to add more features, eventually allowing most of the game to be played with your friends. It’s mighty impressive what modders can do and if I can eventually battle Alduin with my girlfriend, that’ll be a blast. Check out the video above for the latest features and download the mod on their site. Read more…

Game of Thrones Theme: Now On Floppy Drives

Posted by Ben Huber on May 18, 2012 in Fandom

No, not literally stored on floppy drives – better than that. The Game of Thrones theme has been played on just about every instrument and object imaginable, but this is one of the most unique versions I’ve seen: floppy drives. MrSolidSnake745‘s excellent floppy drive musical renditions have been floating around the internet for quite a while, and as far as “pro floppy drive musicians” go, I’m pretty sure he’s the best. The rest of his songs are pretty well-done, and there’s something delightfully retro about hearing songs played on aging computer parts.

Art of the Instakill Shows You Can Never Escape the Blue Turtle Shell

Posted by Ben Huber on May 13, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Instant kills are a common thing in games, and they’re blast when you’re the one executing them. However when you’re on the receiving end, they can be pretty frustrating. Corridor Digital combined many of the most well-known insta-kill attacks into one silly video, excellent for your weekend entertainment. Everyone from Master Chief, to the Spy, to a Combine officer hop into the battle and Corridor Digital does a great job re-creating them in live-action. Great work!

Iron Man Costume Is Better Than the Movie Version

Posted by Ben Huber on May 13, 2012 in Fandom

Want your own Iron Man outfit? Anthony Le did, so he did what any cosplayer would do: he made his own. With working flaps, mask, and lights – which are probably more features than the outfit for the film. Too bad you can purchase a suit like this… I’d probably just end up wearing it around the house, using it to mess up everything. Iron Man better watch out for that creeper in the background, though!

Amazing Twilight Princess Papersculpt Will Make Your Jaw Drop

Posted by Ben Huber on May 6, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

zelda

I love how papercraft has been really picking up steam and becoming popular. It’s really incredible to see some of the things people make, and not all of it is the traditional boxy models. Cameron Garland has made a “papersculpt,” which is layers of paper laid on top of one another to give a dimensional feel to the creation. This Zelda: Twilight Princess set of weapons and items he created are super-detailed – they almost looked like drawings to me at first. It was on sale for $300, but it looks like someone has already gotten to it. Now this is giving me the urge to get out my X-acto knife and try doing it myself! Read more…

Darth Vader Batman is Every Kid’s Dream Action Figure

Posted by Ben Huber on May 6, 2012 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections

vaderbatman

If you polled kids and asked them about their favorite fictional characters, I’m gonna guess Darth Vader and Batman would be pretty high up on the list. Now if you combine the two? You get the Darth Knight, an amazingly detailed custom action figure by John Harmon at Mint Condition Customs. This model stands 6 inches tall and would probably eat your other action figures for breakfast. If you were wanting to get your hands on this figure, though, you’re out of luck, as he’s already been sold. Better get cracking on making your own! Read more…

Fan-Made Star Fox Intro Remake is an Amazing Tribute to Barrel Rolls

Posted by Ben Huber on May 5, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames

Here’s a great weekend-capper: Rickonami on YouTube has recreated the Star Fox intro using CGI. Yup, the whole thing, and he’s done an excellent job with it! This single video has made me more nostalgic for Star Fox than the recent Star Fox 64 3DS remake, so that’s saying something. I do like that he included the slightly-creepy-but-still-endearing puppets of the Star Fox crew as the profile images – it adds to the awesome factor. I hope to see more fantastic work from Rickonami in the future… he’s got talent!

Exploring Star Wars Indentities

Star Wars Identities Exhibit

Finally a reason to go to Canada! I’m kidding, I’m sure there’s plenty of reasons — maple syrup, for instance — but Star Wars fans have something to add to that list. Star Wars Identities attempts to bring you into the Star Wars universe as you’ve never experienced it before. With over 200 props, costumes, models and works of art from the series, the exhibition offers a unique look at the Star Wars Galaxy as we’ve come to know it.
