Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 14, 2012 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections
I think I can safely title this that, right? Carlyle Livingston and Wayne Hussey, two intrepid LEGO fans, took nearly 400 hours each over three months to build the most impressive Batcave I’ve ever seen. It has all the important details, and even the not-so-important details. All those angled bricks for the cave surface look amazing, and I love the little exits for the various Bat-vehicles. Carlyle and Wayne have been taking the Batcave around to various conventions, so you may have caught it at Brickcon or Emerald City ComiCon. Absolutely insane! If you were like me, you got excited about seeing such a cool comic coming alive on the big screen – but nothing ever materialized. The movie never got the funding it needed and was dropped. However, David Fincher, Eric Powell, and the gang at BLUR Studios really want to make this film. So they’re running a Kickstarter to finance the full-length story reel – aka, the rough edit of the storyboards. It’ll have music, sound effects, and the like, but be aware it’s not “making” the CGI film you’re supporting. Will that make Hollywood take another look at The Goon? I’m not sure, but you have to admire the sheer willpower of the creators! Read more… World of Warcraft Map Built Entirely in Minecraft, 1:1 Scale

Here’s something mighty impressive: how would you like to play in the World of Warcraft map, but rather than playing WoW itself, you can punch trees and ride pigs? Different strokes for different folks, right? Well Reddit user RamsesA used custom software he made to take the WoW map and convert it into a Minecraft map, and it’s kind of crazy. Once compiled, the map is roughly 24 gigs in size, which is larger than actually installing WoW itself. Then again, this is a WoW map you can customize and change according to your whims. Talk about insane (and cool)! Read more… LEGO Version of Foster the People’s Houdini Rocks Out!
Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 29, 2012 in Fandom
YouTube user Insomniac has been making some amazing LEGO videos for a while now, but his latest music video featuring Foster the People and their song Houdini is probably my favorite. I’m really amazed at how much time he spent working on it, getting all the camera angles correct and making the lighting really work – it’s incredibly good. And fluid, too! Hopefully he’ll post a video on his site soon showing off the behind-the-scenes work done on it. Till then, click through the break to see an awesome music video featuring cute plastic yellow people jamming out. Read more… Portal 2 Fan Creates Animated Version of the Game
Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 22, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames
Have you ever wondered what Portal might look like if it was animated by Disney? Here’s your first look at a work made by Chelsea GR (username NQN), a Portal fan who re-created a scene from the beginning of Portal 2 in a unique style. This animated short takes audio from the game and matches it up with art she created, and suffice to say, it’s an impressive work for a single individual. So, now that’d you’ve seen this, who wants an official Saturday morning cartoon of Portal 2? Hello? Valve? Read more… Pénnymon: Cute, Tiny Generation I Pokémon Models

Looking for a project to tackle? Most try a diet or building a treehouse. However, Redditor Ninjazzy had a different summer project in mind: creating all 151 original Generation I Pokémon out of Sculpey clay. And every single one fits on a penny. They’re really adorable, and I can’t imagine the dedication needed for this project. Hopefully Ninjazzy will throw some of these up on Etsy, because I know a lot of people who’d love to have figurines like these. Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 9, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames
Source Filmmaker is one of the best things Valve has released. Already, countless fan films have been made using it, some of them rivaling Valve’s own work. Nailbiter (aka Randall Glass) took SFM and combined it with Maya, the Source SDK, and a helping of Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead, resulting in a fantastic short that I sure hope lands him a job. It features a Team Fortress character, the Scout, meeting up with a few zombies from Left 4 Dead – and maybe it doesn’t go quite how he hoped. Check it out after the break. This falls into the ‘really clever’ category: the Avengers done as heroes in Japan’s warring states period. The Sengoku Avengers were drawn by Alex Mitchell (genesischant) who redid the entire cast as if they had sprung from ancient Japanese literature. Iron Man is really bold and colorful, while Nick Fury is a bit more faithful. I particularly like Agent Coulson as Fury’s owl – very cute. Alex needs to make these available as prints pronto! See more after the jump. Up until that point there were gatherings of anime fans in New York City thanks to the local chapter of the Cartoon/Fantasy Organization, but this was the first time that anime fandom found a place inside of a larger convention. My memory is fuzzy but the event lasted two full days, had about 100 people hanging around at any time and featured a mix of videotapes being played along with panel discussions. Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 25, 2012 in Fandom
While we might not have the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier from the Avengers in real life yet, Russian RCDesign forum user native18 took it upon himself to create a full-functioning RC replica of the flying behemoth. Obviously it’s more made for action figures than real people, but it coasts on water and flies too! Mighty impressive work, even if the music is a little too dramatic for the video. Still, I hope we see something similar as a product one day, because who wouldn’t want to own their own S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier? Video after the break. When I saw these awesome custom-made hoodies from Rarity’s Boutique on Etsy, I simply had to bring them to your attention. Lisa Lou has been creating some great-looking hoodies inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender and My Little Pony, from the Earth Kingdom to Rainbow Dash. There’s even a Doctor “Whooves” hoodie, which is sure to appeal to plenty of fanboys out there! The hoodies, being custom-made, are in the $150 range and take about 7 weeks from the order date. Definitely worth it for a unique piece of clothing like this! Let’s just say Bane has a lot of community service lined up. Watch Patrick Stewart and Arya Stark Scalp Tickets at the Olympics
Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 11, 2012 in Fandom
This is probably the best thing we’ll see all weekend: watch this new Funny of Die short featuring Sir Patrick Stewart as Ticket-Tooth Phillip, the best ticket scalper to ever walk the streets of London, along with his assistant Maisie Williams (aka Arya Stark). It’s incredibly hilarious, especially to see who they encounter along the way – mainly, Simon Pegg and Ryan Lochte. I won’t spoil any of the jokes, but I do love that these actors and athletes get in on little films like this. It’s a nice diversion! Now, can someone please get Sir Patrick Stewart in Game of Thrones? Thanks. Fistful of Rupees – A Zelda/Western Fan Film
Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 10, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames
This is one of the more impressive and better mashups I’ve seen in recent times: The Game Station and Country Club’s Fistful of Rupees fan film. Combining westerns with The Legend of Zelda series, they do a great job of making something entertaining and fun, yet not embarrassing, like so many other fan films. Particularly the costume design – that poncho that Link is wearing is incredibly cool, and needs to be a real thing, pronto. I wouldn’t even wear it, but I want it. The whole film is split into 3 parts and spans a little over 20 minutes. Parts 2 and 3 are after the break! Read more… Meet the Cores in This Portal 2 Fan-Film

Portal 2 had some great characters, and Harry Callagan (Harry101UK) wanted to try his hand at them too. So why not create a CGI fan-film? This 5-minute long video features some of the best Personality Cores from Portal 2, as well as a few Harry created on his own, to add to the cast. He spent three week making this along with a few friends, and it turned out fantastic! I can’t wait to see what else he creates in the future. Unless Liam Neeson is Your Dad, You’re Screwed

Taken has been a bit of a subject recently with Taken 2 slowly creeping over the horizon. And why not? Liam Neeson killing people and generally being awesome is worth watching. But CaptainHippo takes a look at what would happen in real life if you were kidnapped – and your real father was put in Neeson’s situation. Would he come dashing to rescue you in a bloody murder spree? Or perhaps get to it after he fixed the spouts. He still hasn’t fixed those spouts, has he… Tiny LEGO Models, Big Personality: Batman, Blade Runner, and More!

Flickr user _Tiler has been getting some attention recently, and rightly so: his small LEGO models, while made of only a few parts, have a striking amount of detail and character! Ranging in subjects from The Dark Knight Rises, Blade Runner, and The Fifth Element, I’d hope LEGO would take note of these, as they’d make great sets, especially as stocking stuffers or the like. Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 29, 2012 in Fandom, Videogames
Bioware cinematic designer James McVinnie was excited by the prospect of Source Filmmaker – it’s an easy-to-use tool allowing someone to make digital movies using game models. Combined with motion-tracking from two Kinects, he created Practical Problems, a short TF2 film in which two Engineers duke it out. It’s really quite cute, and shows the potential of Source Filmmaker to open up the animation world. Many of these videos are mighty impressive, and they’re only getting better! |
