One of the coolest trends we spotted at NYCC this year were parents and kids attending the show both dressed in cosplay! What we liked about this is that it makes the whole event more family friendly, and we hope to see more of this next year… Read more… The Silly Side of New York Comic ConThere are those fans who will tell you that cosplay is a high art to be taken seriously — and what follows is a photo essay which doesn’t feature those fans! Posted by Michael Pinto on Oct 16, 2011 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections
I hate to admit it but one of my few regrets at New York Comic Con this year was not grabbing a t-shirt which featured a debased old NASA logo twisted to read “Nerd”. My second runner up was a very clever brony themed t-shirt based on the old Mustang car logo: Read more… MAD Magazine; Four Decades of Fold-InsA few months back, Chronicle Books published The MAD Fold-In Collection: 1964-2010, a collection of Al Jaffee’s award-winning fold-ins featured on the back of MAD Magazine over the past four decades. For those of us who grew up reading MAD, this special collection is an absolute must-buy. Though I haven’t personally subscribed to the publication in recent years, I have fond memories of purchasing issues and immediately flipping them over to see what Jaffee had in store for us. His brilliant designs are not only humorous and satirical, but constantly remain topical and are often thought-provoking. Missed DragonCon This Year? Beat Town Boogie Has You Covered
Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 27, 2011 in Fandom, Hobbies and Collections
Sure, it’s another video, but I’m sure you’ll overlook that once you see what it is. Beat Town Boogie, the guys who produced that hilarious Metal Gear Solid x Modern Warfare fan-film the other year, recently attended DragonCon in Atlanta. While they were there, they took their nifty HD camera setup and filmed all the cosplay they could. Here’s the final product; a 23 minute montage of some of the best cosplay you’ll ever see. After seeing the quality of these costumes, its no wonder why everyone I know decided to attend this year. The number of con-goers who attend in costume is simply mind-boggling, and from what I understand, continues to grow each year. If this video isn’t enough to convince you to attend, I’m not sure what would — it really looks like a blast. These Sneakers Let You Stomp Like a WompaI didn’t really realize they were still running the Adidas x Starwars campaign from the other year, but it’s cool that it’s still happening. For example, check out these sweet wampa-inspired kicks, complete with faux wampa fur. It’s actually horse hair, but I don’t think anyone would notice. Besides, convincing someone you actually killed a wampa shouldn’t be too hard. Luke did it and he probably had some form of frostbite by that point. Of course, you’ll have to actually order a pair first. Tthey’re pretty expensive at $150 a pair, and I’m sure keeping them clean is going to be a pain, but chances are that you’ll be the only person you know who owns them. There’s always that, right? I just hope that at some point, they make a pair in wookie-brown. Read more… The Question Isn’t Where, but WhenFans never cease to amaze me. For those of you who are scratching your head, you’re looking at a poster mock-up for the fictional 1960s British television series Inspector Spacetime, seen in last weeks episode of Community. Upon witnessing the terrible acting and low-budget special effects, Abed proclaims it to be the best thing he’s ever seen — which, ironically, is the exact same reaction I had the first time I watched Doctor Who. So, the series supposedly follows the Inspector as he travels through time and space in his red DARSIT, while saving the universe from creatures like the dreaded Blogons, or Digifleet. Within a week, the series already has its own TVtropes page, cosplayers, and fan-made merchandise. As a friend pointed out, the joke was clearly meant to parody the Doctor’s fans more than his series, but I suppose that’s what makes it so great. There’s multiple layers to the humor. Let’s just hope the producers keep the joke running through out the season. Someone Has the Best Dad Ever; Lunch Bag Art
Posted by Tim Sheehy on Sep 21, 2011 in Fandom
It’s certainly one way to ensure your kid has a spot at the “cool kids” table. All of this lunch box art is by a San Diego dad who enjoys drawing on his kid’s lunch bags in his spare time. The designs come from every corner of geekdom, from Sci-fi and film to comics and games. I have no idea if his kids get multiple uses out of the bags, but the bags are certainly cooler than anything you could get at a store. Speaking of which, he actually has a store you can visit if you’d like one of his original works, or a caricature of Rick Astley. Otherwise, if you just want to see more of his designs, check out his official Tumblr — it’s updated regularly. Posted by Michael Sacco on Aug 28, 2011 in Fandom
So, I absolutely adore when great artists and writers take very adult subject matter and turn it into a children’s book. This particular children’s book, designed by Andrew Kolb, takes David Bowie’s classic tune “Space Oddity” and gives it a whimsical makeover, with Kolb providing fantastic art to go along with Bowie’s lyrics. However, Kolb doesn’t change the lyrics or content, making it unusually grim for a children’s book. Then again, I suppose that’s probably the point. There’s nothing you can do, after all. I had hoped to catch a glimpse of the statue after it had moved to Shizuoka, but the statue was dismantled at end of March. Given the recent drop in tourism, I’ve wondered if we’d ever have another chance to see the statue again. It doesn’t look likely, but Sunrise Studios recently announced plans to display at least a portion of the statue in Odaiba later this month. Starting Sunday, August 21st, visitors to Odaiba island’s Shiokaze Park can pay 500 yen to gain admission to the event between the hours of 6 AM to 10 PM. No word on which parts of the statue will be on display but guessing by the image on the official site, I assume it’ll be the head. Sure, it’s not the full statue, but it’s still a piece of history and definitely worth checking out. Teens Go Geek at 2011 Choice Awards; Let’s Talk About the FutureThe results for tonight’s Teen Choice Awards— established by Fox in ’99 —will make most full-grown geeks eyes’ roll: the befanged stars of The Vampire Diaries and Twilight took home awards, as did the wizards of Harry Potter and the awfully attractive and talented “outcasts” of Glee. But maybe instead of rolling our eyes, we should consider opening them. Read more… SDCC11: A Few Highlights

On Saturday July 23rd the D20 Burlesque troupe will present their stage show 8 Bit Beauties at the he Parkside Lounge. From my small time playing with this new service I’ve noticed a few folks who are really going the extra mile to use the site to say something interesting and to really make their mark. This isn’t by any means a scientific or comprehensive list, but here are some of the more interesting folks I’ve come across on Google+ so far: Read more… An Important Slave Leia Cosplay Public Service AnnouncementIn this cute video actress Kaley Cuoco takes on the ever important issue of Slave Leia cosplay at conventions: Read more… Rock Out With One Piece Punk TeesCheck out these wicked One Piece punk rock tees from Japanese clothing label Project SR’ES. While I still admit that I’m not the worlds largest One Piece fan, I have to admit the show has led to plenty of interesting fashion. The Tony Tony Chopper tee in particular stikes me as not only sleek and adorably awesome, but incredibly wearable. I can’t really say that much for most of the anime-themed clothing on the market. The real issue is that I’m pretty sure we’ll never get a chance to order these in the US. While the clothing label was established in Honolulu back in 2000, all that remains domestically is a US show room. Their business operation primarily resides in Japan. On top of that, most of the clothing sizes are Japanese, meaning that even though I wear an American medium or large, I’d be forced to hunt for a Japanese extra large and even then, there’s no guarantee it’ll fit comfortably. Maybe we’ll get lucky and find a few of them floating around eBay. If you’d like a closer look, head over to the Oricon Store for more photos. Canada’s Space TV Gets Fanboy Confessional Special

When I heard about this news, I went over to the U.S. SyFy Channel’s schedule and saw that the cable network is showing the three original Indiana Jones flicks, National Treasure, and six hours of Hollywood Treasure, a reality show about a team of Californians who acquire and resell props and other memorabilia. Blech. Meanwhile, Canada’s Space TV is getting a reality show spotlighting actual fans. WTF, SyFy. Read more… My Little Pony: Fighting is F@#!ing AwesomeEver heard of game developer Mane 6? No?
