CW and Warner Bros Still Trying to Make a Wonder Woman TV Show

Posted by Ben Huber on Dec 2, 2012 in Comic Books

wonderwoman

Remember how we heard tale of a Wonder Woman show on the CW a while back? Running under the title Amazon, they were struggling to get the show made, and well, it seems they’re still trying. Currently they’re hunting for their lead actress and the listing mentions that the story is a “fish-out-of-water” tale featuring Diana as a warrior who arrives in the modern world in awe of the skyscrapers, cars, and technology. Will the CW finally get this show made? I highly doubt it given the troubles they’ve had so far, but perhaps their desire to replicate Smallville’s success will overcome the difficulties.

Rumor: Warner Bros. Eyeing Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Batman?

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 30, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

gordonlevitt

Christopher Nolan is finished with Batman now, and Warner Bros. is surely hunting for the best way to continue or reboot the franchise. Nolan’s open ending was intended for the viewer to imagine their own continuation, but not doubt Warner Bros. will use that to their advantage: HitFix is reporting that they’re already lining Joseph Gordon-Levitt up to play Batman in the upcoming Justice League movie. What a shocker! Read more…

Marvel MODOK Mug Will Keep Your Coffee Warm

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 26, 2012 in Comic Books

modok

I don’t think I need to say much about this sweet MODOK mug from ThinkGeek. It’s a coffee (or tea, if that’s your style) mug fashioned in the shape of Marvel Comics character MODOK, designed only for keeping your drinks warm. Or something along those lines. I’m sure there’s a million great puns here, but ThinkGeek already made them all. Perhaps it’s not the greatest geek mug ever, but you have to admit – drinking out of MODOK’s hollowed-out head is sure to be awesome and also scare your coworkers. Pick it up here!

Kotobukiya’s New 52 Justice League Batman Figure Stands into Action

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 19, 2012 in Comic Books, Hobbies and Collections

batman1

It just didn’t feel right to say “leap into action,” since he’s just standing there, you know? Kotobukiya is continuing their solid New 52 Justice League lineup, and the latest addition is Batman! I must say, while his pose is kind of boring, I actually like the sculpt of Batman himself. He’s a little leaner than the usual Batman figures, making him look more like an agile ninja than a hulking hero in the night. He is, just like the others, very shiny. Whether you like that aspect falls into personal preference, but I’d say he looks good paired up with the rest of the crew. If you’re looking to pick Batman up, pre-order him at AmiAmi, Hobby Search, or HLJ. Read more…

Get Your First Look at Mandarin in Iron Man 3

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 4, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

mandarin

Ok, your first clear look at Mandarin. There were hints of him in the first trailer for Iron Man 3, but now we have a nice clear image of him. And you know what? Ben Kingsley looks pretty awesome all dressed up like that. I’m impressed how well they adapted the character for the screen – although, is he wearing a graphic tee underneath all that? I’m interested if Shane Black (the new director) can pick the series up after the generally disappointing Iron Man 2, given his close relationship with Robert Downey Jr. Perhaps the magic of the first movie will never be matched, but at the very least I bet we’ll get an awesome villain. Sony Wants Jamie Foxx to Play Electro

Posted by Ben Huber on Nov 3, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

spiderman

Sony is revving their engines for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and of course they’re out hunting down their villain. Given the implied ending of the first movie, people guessed that Electro would be the main villain. Sony hasn’t even bothered keeping it a secret, and they’re apparently looking into having Jamie Foxx play the shocking (haha, no) villain. Foxx certainly didn’t help matters by tweeting that he dressed up as electro for Halloween, saying the “costume fits well.” Is Electro a good fit for the next Spider-Man film? I’m sure there are better villains out there, but I’m still curious to see how they tackle the character. Read more…

Batman Fights Superman In Trailer For The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 18, 2012 in Animation, Comic Books

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2

Batman vs. Superman is one of those match-ups that usually bug me. One of them is an extremely intelligent, paranoid sociopath, while the other is a nigh-invincible alien who can throw anything that bothers him into the sun. Writers will try to even the odds, since Batman is as big a name as Superman, but realistically, there’s no way that Superman wouldn’t just punch Batman to death before he could execute any of his plans. We have Guardians of the Galaxy peeking over the horizon, and Thor: The Dark World is scheduled for November 2013, but recently news has been dropping in regards to the Captain America sequel, The Winter Soldier. Featurette for Arrow TV Series Tries To Avoid Comic Connections

Posted by Bob Muir on Oct 4, 2012 in Comic Books, Television

Arrow

Superheroes are big business in entertainment, even more so after the spectacular success of The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises this year. It’s not that surprising that we’d see a comic book character adapted into a TV series, which is what the CW is doing with Arrow, a live-action take of Green Arrow. But just as comics are becoming more accepted in the mainstream, Arrow seems to be doing its best to distance itself from its origins, as shown in this three-minute featurette. Read more…

Sony Shutting Down PSP Comic Store

Posted by Ben Huber on Oct 1, 2012 in Comic Books, Videogames

pspcomic

Perhaps I’m just out of the loop, but I must admit: I didn’t even know you could purchase comics on your PSP or Vita. The service will be shutting down October 30th, and anything you own on the service will be available to download until mid-January 2013 (licenses permitting). I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, you could download a huge variety of stuff on the PS Store. Still, it’s a little sad to see another option go, especially since a digital manga store is opening up for Vita owners in Japan around the same time this one closes! As usual, Japan gets everything cool. Read more…

Patrick Stewart Will Once Again Play Professor X

Posted by Bob Muir on Sep 27, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

Professor X

It’s been a while since Patrick Stewart played Charles Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X, in the X-Men films. X-Men: The Last Stand was his last take, with subsequent films focusing on Wolverine and then recasting James McAvoy in the role for X-Men: First Class. Of course, First Class did pretty well, so there’s a sequel planned — and Stewart is back on board. Read more…

What Can We Expect From Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series?

Posted by Bob Muir on Sep 13, 2012 in Comic Books, Television

Nick Fury

While his fans are surely happy that Joss Whedon was simply working on another TV series, the fact that it’s set in the Marvel universe is probably some very heavy icing on the cake. After seeing his handiwork with The Avengers — he even made me somewhat appreciate Thor after a horrible solo movie — I’m sold on his plans to bring the military/spy/secret agent organization S.H.I.E.L.D. to the small screen. Now Whedon is hinting at what form the series may take. Read more…

Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One Boxset Delayed

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 8, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

phaseone

Sadly, it’s true: the massive and awesome-looking Phase One boxset featuring all the Marvel films so far (including the Avengers) that was set to come out September 25th is now delayed. Why? Apparently, Rimowa GmbH, a German luggage company is suing Marvel for using a design of theirs. Apparently, while Marvel and Disney licensed the use of suitcase design in the film, they didn’t get rights to making a plastic case for the Phase One boxset. Thus, they’re back to square one, and will redesign the case. So if you had Phase One on pre-order – don’t worry – you’ll get it eventually. Just not September 25th. And not in that sweet packaging. I’m sure we’ll end up with a similar-yet-very-different suitcase in the end, it’s just a shame we have to wait. Read more…

Robot Chicken DC Special Teases Aquaman

Posted by Ben Huber on Sep 8, 2012 in Comic Books, Television

aquaman

Robot Chicken always does some amazing specials, and it looks like their upcoming DC Comics special will be no exception. Seth Green went on Conan to promote the special with a short clip featuring Aquaman. I’m sure you can all figure out where it’s going from here. I’d guess they picked a clip to appeal to more mainstream audiences, but the Robot Chicken guys always deliver solid stuff, so I’m excited to watch it. The special airs this Sunday at midnight, don’t miss it! Read more…

The Justice League/Transformers Crossover That Never Was

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 31, 2012 in Comic Books

jla-transformers

Here’s some simultaneously awesome and depressing news: at one point, Phil Jimenez pitched a Justice League/Transformers crossover to both DC (Justice League) and IDW (owners of the comic license for Transformers). And while IDW was more than happy to get the ball rolling, DC didn’t seem to approve of the combo. Perhaps Hasbro had an influence in the decision too, we don’t really know. What an incredible shame! Who wouldn’t want to see Optimus Prime as a Green Lantern? That’s freaking brilliant! Thankfully, the flip side of this, is Brian Michael Bendis has released his art done for the pitch, so you can at least see some awesome art. Read more…

Avengers Promo Videos Feature Samuel L. Jackson and Commodore 64

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 27, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

avengers

With the release of the Avengers’ Blu-ray and DVD coming up in September, the marketing is in full-force with videos teasing the special features and deleted scenes. Below the break we have Bruce Banner asking about a Commodore 64, actors singing the praises of Samuel L. Jackson’s skills, and Joss Whedon explaining some of his method to making the film. I suppose the marketing is doing its job, because now I’m pretty interested in seeing more of these deleted scenes! Read more…

Kotobukiya’s New Flash Figure is… Flashy!

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 20, 2012 in Comic Books, Hobbies and Collections

photo-m1

The other day, on their Facebook page, Kotobukiya revealed their latest New 52 ArtFX+ figure: The Flash! It looks to be in line with their other ArtFX+ figures, at 7.5 inches tall. It’s a pretty nice sculpt, nothing too fancy, but my first thought was “isn’t he supposed to be moving?” It seems the Flash would lend himself to a more dynamic pose easily. I know, I know, he has to match his pose with the rest of the figures. The Flash will be available in February 2013. More images below! Read more…

Avengers 2 Release Date Confirmed for the Distant Future of 2015

Posted by Bob Muir on Aug 16, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

Avengers

After The Avengers was released back in May, I wanted a sequel right away. It didn’t help that Marvel’s usual post-credits teaser was prominently shown before the credits even finished rolling. I want to know what Thanos is grinning about, if the Skrulls Chitauri are going to cause more trouble, and how anyone could top the citywide brawl at the film’s climax. Sadly, it sounds like fans will have to wait a while longer. Read more…

Warner Bros. Wants Ben Affleck to Direct Justice League

Posted by Ben Huber on Aug 10, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

justice-league-1

Warner Bros. sure does want to make a Justice League film. After their darling, Christopher Nolan, has said he’s done with superhero films, they began searching for someone else to take the reigns of their comic book properties. And with the success of The Avengers, they’re eyeing the pie quite hungrily. Now, according to Variety, they’ve approached Ben Affleck about directing the Justice League film. Whether he’ll accept or not is up in the air, but in the meantime you can try and imagine how Affleck’s League might turn out!

First Man of Steel Teaser Trailer Features 1.7 Seconds of Superman

Posted by Ben Huber on Jul 22, 2012 in Cinema, Comic Books

You may have caught it in front of your Dark Knight Rises screening this weekend, but here it is online and easy to catch: the first teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, the new Superman reboot. There’s not much happening here, aside from giving us a look at Clark Kent’s journey across the world, and it’s very nicely shot. However, Snyder being the director makes me a little hesitant – yet, perhaps Christopher Nolan (producer) can reign in Snyder’s over-the-top style. We’ll find out next year.
