Spike Lee, I don’t know exactly what’s going on here. Your first trailer for Oldboy has arrived, and it makes me a little confused. On one hand, this seems pretty solid, with just the right amount of homage to the original film. On there other, I just can’t help but wonder how any changes will affect the story. From what we’ve heard from test screenings, it sounds like the “most important” parts of the story stay the same (if you’ve seen the film you know what I mean). So I suppose that’s good news. I just have conflicting emotions over this! And why does Josh Brolin look like Jim Carrey on the poster?! Watch the red band trailer below. Read more…

Many people have heard of it, even at international film festivals, but in case you’ve somehow missed it, here’s something crazy. Sharknado is the latest b-movie from The Asylum, and it’s airing tonight (Thursday, July 11, 2013) on SyFy at 9PM EST. It’s a movie about a tornado — of sharks. There’s not much more can be said about without spoiling bits! There’s a lot of hype surrounding this for a TV movie. I’ve personally seen some early segments, and Sharknado embraces the schlock wholeheartedly. But if you’re not yet convinced, try watching this trailer to prepare you for the premiere! Read more…

With both Pacific Rim and Only God Forgives coming in the next two weeks, it’s movie heaven for me. We’re getting one more intense trailer before Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling’s eye-popping film arrives. Some of it is reused footage but there’s a good amount of new clips and a great song pounding in the background (2020 by Suuns). Despite the boos and poor reaction at Cannes, I highly doubt this movie is going to disappoint the same crowd that loved Drive. To all those immature folks at film festivals like that:

I’ve been more excited for this movie than most others this year, but with news that Grown Ups 2 is tracking higher than Pacific Rim, I figured I should do my duty to get the word out. I want to see all of you out there on opening weekend next week, ok? This wonderful Frankenstein monster of Guillermo del Toro and every giant robot show ever looks to be plenty entertaining, and it even has Kayne West’s seal of approval. We had already heard that Christian Bale wasn’t returning to the role of Batman after The Dark Knight Rises. He doesn’t want to play Batman again unless it’s under Christopher Nolan’s direction, and Man of Steel screenwriter/Dark Knight trilogy co-story writer David S. Goyer has said that the Batman appearing in the nebulous Justice League film will be a rebooted character. But on the other hand, Man of Steel, co-produced by Christopher Nolan, did pretty well for Warner Brothers, and rumors began to swirl. So what does Bale have to say on the matter?
As you’d expect, he’s made up his mind on the matter. “We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “Chris [Nolan] always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well.” Well put!
To dispel rumors even further, Bale stated that he hasn’t even been involved in any talks about a Justice League movie. “I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it.” Since he’s completely done with Batman, Bale has no issue with anyone else playing the role. “It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”
It was a good run, but I think it’s fine to let Bale retire his cowl. Besides, if he returned, it would tie Nolan’s more realistic Batman to a most likely hyper-realistic Justice League film. For all that was said about making a more realistic Superman, it would be very hard to fit Nolan’s Batman into the world of Man of Steel. Did you see the end of that movie? While Green Lantern or Wonder Woman or even the Flash would work in this world, a Batman film would be rather boring and ordinary compared to what is going on around him. (Disclaimer: I believe Batman works best alone and don’t really like the dynamics of the Justice League due to power disparities. I think what Marvel did with the Avengers, making every team member viable in some way, works far better than a team with nigh-invincible characters like Superman. The only reason Batman is in the Justice League is because he was popular, but he’s basically relegated to “the brains.” In short, I think Marvel’s shared universe and prominent headliners work better together than DC’s.)

Not every poster design gets sent out to theaters. Take a look at these potential Ender’s Game posters focusing on the characters. As “draft” posters, they’re not the finished thing, but you could’ve fooled me. The main stars are present, everything looks futuristic, what’s the problem? We don’t know, since they were leaked, but I’d have been fine with them. Could it be they decided it was a bit weird to only show the male characters’ faces while showing almost all of the female characters’ bodies as well? Actually, let’s chalk it up to that. So whether the ad department was concerned with minor sexism or visual inconsistency, these aren’t your final Ender’s Game posters — but they still look pretty cool. Read more…

This year, Studio Ghibli is releasing two new films in Japan — Hayao Miyazaki’s Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Is Rising) and Isao Takahata’s Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya). Once they’re released, Studio Ghibli will have released 21 films since Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind in 1984 (which was actually pre-Ghibli, but is generally considered to be a Ghibli film), including one TV movie. To celebrate their achievement of creating some of the best animated films ever made, Ghibli made this mural for Japanese theaters. Read more…

Apparently, the narrative that Pixar has been doing too many sequels is stronger than I thought. While I never had too much of an issue with Pixar’s sequels, I won’t deny that I prefer more original stories. You have to have those original stories to make sequels, anyway! But Pixar has heard your calls and have said their new plan is to release an original film every year, and a sequel every other year. Seems pretty solid, right? If you hadn’t said anything I may have thought that was already the plan. But so far we only know one upcoming original Pixar film, Lee Unkrich’s Día de los Muertos-inspired movie. When you think of big-budget superhero movies, which unused characters do you think are really dying for good adaption? Dr. Strange? The Flash? What about… Captain Planet? No? Please come back and watch a Captain Planet movie, Sony Pictures exclaims as the crowds run away. Yes, apparently the cartoon superhero is looking to make a comeback, and he was on top of the list of “unused superheroes.” Is there any way to make this film without embracing the cheesy, kitschy, and oh-so-90s stylings? I suppose there’s an opportunity to make a comedy out of this, but a) that’s already been done by Funny or Die, and b) do you really think they’d go that route? Read more…

At first I hadn’t been too excited for Ridley Scott’s next film, The Counselor. The one sentence blurb didn’t catch my eye (a counselor gets in deep with the drug trade and meets strange people), so I wasn’t really paying attention. That is, until the casting and scripting news arrived. Penned by No Country for Old Men writer Cormac McCarthy, and starring Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, and Penélope Cruz, it looks to be a hard-R return for Scott, and I really can’t wait to see it later this year. Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is already out on Blu-ray — in fact, I’m looking at my girlfriend’s classy box containing all three films on the shelf. But there was an ad included, mentioning the ability to later buy collectibles that would be included in an upcoming “Ultimate Collector’s Edition” of the trilogy. If this Polish Batman site is to be believed, these are the first images of what’s in the box. We don’t know what is on the nine discs besides the movies, but it looks like there’s at least an art book and a lithograph of some sort. There are toy models of significant vehicles from the series, though I’d argue that their coloring is off. And damn, look at what I assume are individual cases for each movie! There’s some amazing stylized art there, such as the Scarecrow’s mask being mixed with a straight jacket, or Bane’s mask and prison bars. It’s just a shame that Warner Brothers didn’t put this out before people bought the first trilogy set! Read more…

On July 19, Edgar Wright is putting out a third film starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost called The World’s End. You may have heard some people calling it the third film in Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy” or “Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy,” with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz being the first two films. Of course, despite featuring the same two main actors (and a slew of the same supporting actors), none of the films have any narrative connection. It can almost become a game to watch out for new short films online. Which one will garner enough attention to get picked up by a big movie studio? Or will they try to Kickstart it? Dr. Easy is a new sci-fi short film by Warp Films, Film4, and Shynola — it’s a prologue to what they hope will be a full adaption of the book The Red Men by Mattew De Abaitua. Ever wanted to see a live-action version of Gatchaman, the popular Japanese anime (also known as G-Force, or Battle of the Planets here in the US). Gatchaman will finally gracing the big screen – but only in Japan for now. This live-action adaption from Japanese director Toya Sato (who previously did the Kaji live-action adaptions) looks to be taking itself pretty seriously here. While it has the typical lower-budget look of many Japanese anime adaptions, in many ways it’s kind of charming. The film will arrives in Japanese theaters August 24th. Hold your tears, Marvel fans, Robert Downey Jr. has signed a new contract with Disney to continue playing Iron Man. The big twist? He’s only signing on for Avengers 2 and 3. Two films, that’s it. So Iron Man 4 will, for now, remain absent of RDJ. Perhaps War Machine will become the focus there? At the very least we’ll see the original Iron Man in the next two team-up films, and perhaps there are some secret cameos signed in there (but we won’t hear about those, obviously). The long and lengthy development time for the LEGO Movie at first seemed to spell trouble, but then we received a flurry of casting news and it seemed the whole project fell into place. Now, the first trailer for the film has arrived. Taking advantage of Warner Bros. large catalog of licenses, Batman, TMNT, and more all show up in the movie. Liam Neeson, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Chris Pratt, Allison Brie, Nick Offerman, and Will Arnett as freaking Batman are just some of the names that show up here. It looks like a solid family movie, and best of all? It’s made with CGI, stop-motion LEGOs, and digital manipulation. And it visually, it looks stunning. Check the trailer out below. Read more…

I’m so glad this film is almost here, because I don’t know how much longer I would be able to wait. It got booed at Cannes, which, aside from being incredibly immature, is a great sign, as many wonderful films got booed there. I realize this kind of film isn’t for everyone, but I hope people will at least give it a chance. Try watching Drive in the meantime – and enjoy the silence. Arnold Schwarzenegger will be returning to play the Terminator again in a new film. It’ll start filming in January, and so far there are no other details on the project. I hope you all are happy with what you’ve wrought. Actually, who knows, maybe it’ll be great, hammy fun – but I have very serious doubts about that. Man, I am just a bountiful fountain of positivity about film reboots and franchises this week. Starring Matt Damon as a man trying to escape Earth to reach the floating, luxurious sanctuary called Elysium. Of course, he’s stopped at every opportunity by Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley. Calm down people, I know you’re excited. Everyone has been clamoring for a 300 sequel for ages, and despite the studio not wanting to ruin the artistic integrity of the first film, they finally caved to fans’ demands… ok. I’m sorry, this is rude of me. I’m sure there are 300 fans out there. This is the first trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire, and sadly I cannot seem to get excited or interested in it. A lot of cool images have shown up recently showing the filming of the next Captain America film, subtitled Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier himself will be a new antagonist in the movie universe, but comic fans will know him well already. If you don’t, and want to keep some surprises in store for yourself, don’t Google him. But below you can get some ideas of the new modern tone of Captain America, as well as a glimpse at Cap’s new suit. They’ve done a great job with the Winter Soldier’s suit, and Black Widow and Nick Fury showing up is a good sign as well. Consider me slightly more interested in this film! Read more…

The movie arrives in roughly a week, and soon we’ll begin to finally hear impressions of Man of Steel. So far the trailers have been looking pretty solid and did a good job getting me interested in a film I originally had no desire to see. This latest one does a good job of summarizing everything so far and putting it together in one concise package. Visually it looks a little crowded in some areas, but overall it seems good. I love The Wizard of Oz. I am told that when I was only three years old, I would watch it (or parts of it) almost every day. So hearing that the classic movie would be rereleased this September in IMAX to coincide with a 75th anniversary Blu-ray release (in October) sounds amazing. With Warner Brothers struggling to put together a Justice League film and a DC film universe to compete with The Avengers and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are lots of rumors swirling about how things will go down. While Man of Steel is being treated as the first step in DC’s rough plans, no one knows what’s happening with Batman. While Christian Bale is almost assuredly out of the picture, will the new Batman be a recasting of the same Batman, a new character taking over his mantle, or a completely rebooted character that ignores Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy? Well, there is a Batman reference in Man of Steel. There are spoilers ahead, but it’s something extremely minor that probably won’t help you feel better about WB’s DC plans either way. Read more…
