Get Your Fortune Told By Twitter With #Fortune

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 6, 2015 in Design

fortune

I recently had the chance to get a look at Zage Gage’s (who you might know from Ridiculous Fishing) newest little project: #Fortune. It’s an app based off of his art installation of the same name that took public Tweets and modified them into fortunes that it would print out on tiny sheets of paper. He eventually made it into an app so that everyone could experience getting a fortune from the internet. Sometimes they’re nonsensical, sometimes they’re funny, and often they’ll be more profound than you’d expect. It’s a really neat little experience and I’ve found myself eagerly starting it up each morning to see what it said. It’s free, check it out on the iOS app store! Read more…

This New Persona 5 Trailer Is Stylish As Heck

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 6, 2015 in Videogames

persona5

I know everyone has been waiting with baited breath for any new details about Atlus’ upcoming Persona 5 — and with good reason. It looks incredibly stylish, slick, and well-designed. This new trailer shows off the first gameplay we’ve seen of the game, along with some animated cutscenes and footage of some impressive-looking menus that seem to slide effortlessly between options. There are some great designers over at Atlus! I’ll be honest: I’ve never been able to get into the Persona series before… but this trailer makes me want to. You’ve done your job well, marketing team. I still love that logo too, it all its retro deliciousness. Check out the trailer below and freak out with everyone else. Read more…

Here’s The Launch Trailer For Apotheon

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 2, 2015 in Videogames

apotheon

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been paying much attention to Apotheon. I briefly caught a glimpse of it a while ago and thought to myself, “oh, that looks like a cool PS4 game” and then proceeded with my day. Now, a launch trailer has shown up, as the game is coming out, uh… tomorrow. February 3rd. In addition, if you’re a Playstation Plus member, you can download the game for free anytime during the month. Free isn’t a bad deal! I love the art style of the game, as any screenshot could easily look like an ancient Greek artwork. Hopefully the gameplay will be as good as the visuals! Check out the trailer below. Read more…

Here’s How SpaceX Plans To Land Their Falcon Heavy Rocket

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 2, 2015 in Science

spacex

Do you like cool space rockets? I sure do. Elon Musk’s SpaceX has been doing some amazing work with vertical takeoff and landing rockets (if you haven’t seen if before, watch it here — it’s awesome). Their next rocket, the Falcon Heavy, plans to launch later this year, and will land all three rockets back on the ground vertically. SpaceX has put together a CGI video showing off the entire plan, and well… I’m excited. This kind of engineering work always blows me away. I just hope everything works as intended! You might remember that recently their Falcon rocket test flight went awry after it ran out of hydraulic fluid earlier than expected. SpaceX has since remedied that issue, and I can’t wait to see the next test flight! Read more…

J.K. Simmons Would “Absolutely” Be J. Jonah Jameson Again

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 1, 2015 in Cinema, Comic Books

jjj

Is there any actor who has fit into a role as perfectly as J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson? So many fans loved his portrayal of the cantankerous and outspoken EIC of the Daily Bugle that they’ve basically begged for him to return. I mean, how often do you get to see an actor and character pair transcend “movie universes” and reboots? Simmons could be the first and best! In a recent interview with Howard Stern, Simmons was of course asked about another Spider-Man movie: “I just heard that we…that’s a possibility.” When asked by Stern if he’d do it, Simmons replied, “Absolutely.” What Spider-Man film is Simmons talking about? Well, that’s anybody’s guess at this point. Read more…

The Muppets Visit The Set Of The Empire Strikes Back

Posted by Ben Huber on Feb 1, 2015 in Star Wars

ob9d6FW

Some old photos are new again: Star Wars Archives has surfaced some old photos of the Muppets visiting the set of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. These have been in print before (and that full-color photo has been around online for a while) but most of these haven’t been uploaded to the internet before. It’s a great look at Kermit and Miss Piggy hanging around with their puppet pal Yoda… and the people behind them, like Frank Oz and Jim Henson. I love when stuff like this shows up again after being buried, letting a whole new group of fans see some classics collide! Read more…

Lego Jurassic Park and Avengers Video Games Announced

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 31, 2015 in Cinema, Hobbies and Collections

jurassic

You’re probably not surprised to see more Lego video games announced. But, that said, I have to bring it up because a Lego Jurassic Park game is one of them. It’s titled LEGO Jurassic World, but will actually let you play through all four movies in the game. This means that for the first time ever (correct me if I’m wrong), you’ll be able to play as Lego Jeff Goldblum. This is wonderful news! I hope this game features as many characters as possible (Lego games usually do…) but the next most important question is: can I play as a dinosaur? We’ll have to wait and see. Lego Jurassic World is coming out in June. Oh, and there’s also a Lego Avengers game, based on Avengers and Age of Ultron. Whatever! Read more…

Game of Thrones Season 5 Trailer Out Now

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 31, 2015 in Television

got5

You might recall that there was an Imax showing for Game of Thrones season 4, episodes 9 and 10, the other day. There was a season 5 trailer attached to it, and HBO initially didn’t upload to their YouTube channel, leaving fans to do it on their own. Come on, HBO, don’t you want all those sweet, sweet views for your own channel? Anyway, they have now uploaded it in HD to their Facebook page, so you can check it out there clearly. The trailer is fairly lengthy and definitely gives a good picture of where the season is headed, so as usual, watch at your own risk. And if you’re a book reader, beware the powerful urge to complain about all the changes the showrunners are making to the story! Read more…

Lego Marvel UCS S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Revealed

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 30, 2015 in Hobbies and Collections

Lego-Avengers-Helicarrier-2

Lego does a good job of keeping leaks locked down! Lego fans had heard rumors of an Ultimate Collectors Series Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier for a long while, but images of the set didn’t leak until yesterday! Now it’s been officially announced so here: take a look at the Helicarrier! It’s a large model with quite a lot of minifigures, microscale jets, microfigures, and more. It’s nearly 3000 pieces and will run you $349.99. Lego VIP members will get it February 17th, and it’ll go on sale to the general public on March 1st. It also apparently has a spot to drop in Lego battery-powered motors (sold separately, of course). Check out the images below! Read more…

Conan Does In-Game Minecraft Sequence

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 30, 2015 in Videogames

conan

Conan O’Brien has done a lot of video game-inspired stuff on his show over the years… he definitely seems to have an appreciation for them. Minecraft is still pretty popular (although perhaps the peak has been reached), so it’s not really surprising that Conan has done an entire bit in Minecraft. Conan claims that they wanted to do an entire episode in Minecraft, but that after an initial approval the “creators” backed down and said no. So rather than a whole episode, they did a this video. It’s not bad… I wonder how many interns they had working on this? Read more…

Why: The Jetsons Animated Film In The Works

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 26, 2015 in Animation, Cinema

jetsons

I’m going down the list of classic cartoons that have been rebooted as CGI films, and I’m actually surprised the Jetsons hasn’t happened yet. We’re running out of cartoons though… soon we’re going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel with Snorks or something! Anyway, I digress… Warner Bros. is putting together a Jetsons animated theatrical film, and they’ve nabbed a scriptwriter for it as well in Matt Lieberman. About two years ago, Kanye West said he was creative director on a Jetsons film, but I highly doubt this is the same project now. But yet — if Kanye was involved, I’d be somewhat interested! Are the Jetsons on the cusp of making a comeback? Read more…

Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns Expansion Announced

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 25, 2015 in Videogames

gw2

The first expansion for Guild Wars 2 has been announced at PAX South and titled Heart of Thorns. While there’s no release date yet, they have listed a bunch of the new features that the expansion will add, such as: a new region (Maguuma Jungle), a new profession (Revenant), guild halls, a new PvP game mode titled Stronghold, and a new WvW map called Borderlands. It appears to be a pretty hefty chunk of new content, especially for hardcore fans of the game. If you want to jump into Guild Wars 2, they’re making it extra easy for you, as right now the game is on sale for $9.99. That’s a pretty nice price, especially with no monthly MMO fees! Lego Scooby-Doo Sets Announced

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 25, 2015 in Hobbies and Collections

scooby1

If you pay attention to the Lego community, you probably know that Scooby-Doo sets had been rumored for the past few months. Now, as the London Toy Fair wraps up, Lego has officially announced that yes, they’re real. There are currently four sets listed: a Mystery Machine, Mystery Mansion, Mummy Museum Mystery, and Haunted Lighthouse. The minifigures for these sets look really nice! They’ve definitely captured the characters well. It  appears there will be definitely versions of Scooby as well. As of right now we only have images of the Mystery Machine and the mansion. New Pokkén Tournament Trailer and Images

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 24, 2015 in Videogames

pokken

Some new footage has come out of Pokkén Tournament, Nintendo and Bandai Namco’s Pokémon fighting game. As far as we know, it’s still exclusive to arcades, but I’m still betting on an eventual Wii U release. The new trailer shows off more playable Pokémon, as well as new support characters. They also streamed some matches and it… definitely looks like a fighting game. Pikachu looks a little odd fighting against some of these larger Pokémon with his little punches and kicks — plus that crossed-arms pose at the end gives the impression that Pikachu is hardcore. He’ll mess you up! Check out more videos here and more images here. Read more…

Dreamworks Animation Closes PDI Studio and Cuts 500 Jobs

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 24, 2015 in Animation

dreamworks

Things aren’t looking so hot for Dreamworks Animation right now. Their last couple films haven’t exactly performed well, so a lot of folks were expecting layoffs, however, I don’t think anyone thought they’d be quite so expansive. And closing the PDI studio is definitely sad to see happen as well. Apparently some artists are being offered a chance to work at the remaining Dreamworks Animation studio, but that’s small comfort when 500 people have just been laid off. They have now trimmed down their future releases, instead putting priority on their upcoming sequels like How To Train Your Dragon 3, The Croods 2, and Kung Fu Panda 3. A full list of upcoming films is below. Read more…

Standalone Star Wars Film Testing Kate and Rooney Mara, Tatiana Maslany, and Felicity Jones

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 23, 2015 in Star Wars

tatiana

We’re getting a clearer picture of Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars spinoff film! Last we heard, it was rumored to be a bounty hunter-themed heist film focusing on several of them stealing the plans for the Death Star. Now, we’re getting word that the lead role is female and several actresses are already testing for it. On the list we have several great names, like Kate Mara (House of Cards), her sister Rooney Mara (Girl With The Dragon Tattoo), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, pictured above), and Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). As of yet there’s no word on who might be pulling ahead, aside from that Jones may have to drop out due to prior obligations to Ron Howard’s Inferno. I imagine a Star Wars film, even if it’s a spinoff, is still a pretty big draw, though… Read more…

Simon Pegg Will Co-Write Star Trek 3

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 23, 2015 in Star Trek

pegg

In a curious turn of events, it appears that one of the actors in Star Trek will help write the next installment. Simon Pegg has been signed on to co-write Star Trek 3 along with Doug Jung. The third installment in the Star Trek series has had some minor issues as it searched for a director and a solid script. Now with Justin Lin on board and an upgraded scripting crew, perhaps now the film will really get rolling. Pegg is obviously talented a writing, having helped Edgar Wright script all three of the Cornetto trilogy films. Will this turn the film into Star Trek 3: Scotty’s Adventure? Read more…

Hakoboy (Nintendo 3DS) Looks Amazing

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 19, 2015 in Videogames

cubey

At Nintendo’s last Nintendo Direct, the Japanese Direct snuck in a little downloadable game announcement that went unnoticed by many: Hakoboy! It’s an eShop game by Kirby developer HAL Laboratory, and features a tiny box-like character called… are you ready for this? …Cubey. Essentially, it’s a puzzle-platformer in which Cubey can create blocks from his square body to make bridges, stairs, walls, or just hold down a button. It looks very simple to pick up, but I imagine it’ll get deviously clever very quick. Also: it looks incredibly easy to localize. You better bring this over here, Nintendo of America! Check out the trailer below! Read more…

Gremlins Reboot Put On Ice

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 19, 2015 in Cinema

gremlins

I don’t have anything against reboots per se, but when so many films coming out are reboots or sequels, it feels like losing one isn’t too big of a deal. Screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith had been attached to a Gremlins reboot a while back, and since then we’ve heard just about zero. Seth said, “I think we just ran out of steam.” Hmm, maybe its for the best? He continues, mentioning Steven Spielberg and director Chris Columbus: “It’s something I would love to come back to, but right now Steven’s making two movies back to back and Chris Columbus is busy. We’re all taking a five-minute break on that.” That’s ok! I think we’ll make do in the meantime. Read more…

Georgia Boy Gets Clone Trooper Replacement Arm

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 18, 2015 in Star Wars

trooper_arm

A young boy from Georgia, Liam Porter, born without an arm, recently was given quite the surprise. He wanted a cool-looking Star Wars-themed Clone Trooper prosthetic arm… so what happened? The 501st Legion hooked up with the man 3D printing it and set up a whole event to give it to Liam. This involved several troopers being present and giving him his own helmet to wear too! This is really awesome. From The Augusta Chronicle article: “‘They want it to look as superhero-ish or as robotic as possible,’ Peterson said. ‘To them, it is just cool. And it actually frees us up a lot because now we can feel free to try to experiment and do different things. Like, hey, why not put a clamp on a hand? It’s just a tool anyway.'” Amazing work! Check out a video of the event below. Read more…

Lego Top Gear Falls To Pieces

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 18, 2015 in Television

topgear

Top Gear and Lego bricks are one of the more unlikely combinations I thought I’d see, but here we are! Lego has a new line of licensed cars toys titled Speed Champions. It features car brands like Ferrari, McLaren, Porsche, and others. To promote it, they created a CGI trailer for the new season of Top Gear, featuring the crew messing around backstage as they try to put the Stig back together. The new cars themselves are nice looking, but feature lots of stickers, which makes the Lego fan in me go “blegh!” This isn’t too awful of a crossover, though! I wonder if we’ll ever see official Top Gear Lego sets? Read more…

Check Out This Amazing Custom Lego Landspeeder

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 17, 2015 in Hobbies and Collections, Star Wars

sandspeeder1

Wow, talk about impressive. Lego fan Aaron Fiskum has put together a detailed and quite large X-34 Landspeeder, styled similarly to the highly collectable Lego UCS series of Star Wars sets. It measures about two feet long and features almost 3000 pieces! I’m really blown away by the amount of care put into this, and according to The Brothers Brick, this is Fiskum’s second model he’s made. Wow! I love the curves on the engines and nose of the speeder. Plus, that cockpit looks pretty roomy too! Check out more images below, then stop by his Flickr page to see the entire gallery. Read more…

Watch Game of Thrones In Imax And See The Season 5 Trailer

Posted by Ben Huber on Jan 17, 2015 in Television

gotimax

Game of Thrones in coming to the big screen… the biggest screen, actually. Starting January 29th, for one week Imax theaters will have several Game of Thrones showings, which will be episodes 9 and 10 of season 4, followed by a new trailer for season 5. These two episodes (“The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children”) are some of the biggest showpieces for Game of Thrones, and will probably be pretty neat to see on the big screen. Obviously this is really meant for the hardcore fans, and as such they’ll also be giving out two posters at the screenings: one (“The Watchers on the Wall”) at all AMC theaters, and another (“The Children”) at all other theaters. I’ve included the posters below, but be warned: they feature major spoilers! Tickets are on sale now here. Read more…
