Universal Plans Battlestar Galactica Reboot Movie
Most stories don’t need a modern reboot, at least not in the manner that Hollywood has been constantly remaking any semi-notable IP the last several years. But I’m partway through the fourth season of SyFy’s 2003-2009 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, and I’m thoroughly impressed with what they made. I don’t feel the need to go watch the original 1978 series, but I’m very happy with what they made for modern audiences. Of course, that story ended, and a few spin-offs not withstanding, its story has come to a close. Guess it’s time to reboot it again!
Universal wants to completely reimagine the story of humanity fleeing the Cylon menace to search for a new home. The reboot would take the form of a movie produced by Glen Larson, creator of the original series. Jack Paglen, writer of Transcendence and the in-progress Prometheus sequel, will write the script. At one point, Bryan Singer was signed on as director, as this project has been in the works for a while (and was at one point tied to the SyFy reboot), but he’s currently tied up with various X-Men movies, so it’s unlikely that he’ll still direct.
I don’t want to say I’m against this, especially because the previous reboot was so well done, but as usual, I’m not sure this is necessary or the best idea. What Ronald D. Moore created with the new series was a marvelous drama with lots of twisty plot and character moments, something that’s hard to pull off in a mere two hours of film. I’m curious as to what form a new Battlestar Galactica movie could take.
