First Teaser For Disney’s Frozen Raises Doubts

Frozen

It might not be the next Disney Renaissance, but after a new dark age in the 00s, Disney has been putting out several solid films in a row. The Princess and the Frog, Winnie the Pooh, Tangled, and Wreck-It Ralph have all done well, so it’s natural to anticipate Disney’s adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen, which they’re calling Frozen. The original title suggests a dark fairy tale, and even the changed name conjures up images of frozen wastelands and endless snow. And then, Disney puts out this teaser.

This isn’t a bad teaser. Though it seems like a vignette that might not even appear in the film, everything works. But I can’t be the first person who instead of imagining Disney’s next major animated film is thinking of Ice Age‘s Scrat. Maybe that’s what they’re going for! The video’s YouTube page calls the film “a stunning big-screen comedy adventure.” Without seeing full trailers or the actual film, I really can’t say. I just think it’s a shame that such an interesting idea needs to be billed as a comedy. Many of Disney’s classics have comedic elements, but I wouldn’t classify them as comedies. It seems like they’re trying to make Tangled again, as far as tone goes. (Note how the reindeer acts like a dog, just like Tangled‘s horse.)

So I could be overreacting, and I don’t know how the finished product will be. But I can’t be alone in hoping that Frozen was more Sleeping Beauty and less Bolt. Put some wonder and awe in before the November 27 release!
