Leaked Plot Of Disney’s Tomorrowland Actually Sounds Interesting
It’s easy to be skeptical when Disney talks about making a movie out of a theme park attraction. Sure, Pirates of the Caribbean turned out to be surprisingly great, but the rest of the films weren’t so hot, and the less said about The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy the better. But when Brad Bird supposedly has an idea for the upcoming movie Tomorrowland based on a box of Disney memorabilia labeled “1952,” you start to wonder if it could possibly be intriguing. A supposed plot leak only piques interest further.
HitFix has what they claim is the description currently being used for casting: “A teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and uravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth.” It doesn’t match up with Jim Hill’s speculation (based on Disney’s government work and stuff about aliens), but it sounds plausible.
HitFix continues with a more in-depth version of the plot. An 11-year old Frank Walker tries to work with this fantastical advanced-sci-fi realm called Tomorrowland at the 1964 World’s Fair, but David Nix (Hugh Laurie) dismisses his inventions and youth. A girl named Athena sneaks Frank in; he is kicked back out, but learns that Athena, who he has come to love, is a robot. Many years later, Frank (George Clooney) teams up with Athena (unchanged) and a young girl named Casey to break back into Tomorrowland and find out why the now-corrupt Nix has kicked out all the creative thinkers to horde the place for himself.
That sounds surprisingly cool for what could have just been a cash-in. It evokes elements of BioShock (coming to “paradise” after its corruption), dystopias in general, and sounds like it wants to explore the complicated, most likely sad relationship of a man who has aged and a robot girl who never will. There’s the opportunity for some fantastic retro-future visuals too. If this is where Tomorrowland is headed, count me in. For now though, everyone will have to wait until the film’s release on December 19, 2014.
