Assassin’s Creed III Launch Trailer Hypes Up Today’s Release

Assassin's Creed III

If you’re reading this on the east coast right now, not only do you still have some sort of power in the midst of Hurricane Sandy, but you get the treat of watching the launch trailer for Assassin’s Creed III on the day the game releases! This is the game fans have been waiting for since Assasssin’s Creed II in 2009, and after two more games with Ezio than we expected, the day is finally here. The setting shifts from the Italian Renaissance and Constantinople to the American Revolution, and the new lead is the half-Native American Ratonhnhaké:ton, better known as Connor Kenway.

The launch trailer gives Connor’s backstory and explains why he’s fighting the British on the side of George Washington and the colonists, when you might expect a Native American would kind of want both parties off his land. Some game journalists are claiming that this trailer is full of spoilers, but from the looks of it, it doesn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know from the premise, so maybe the spoilers are only apparent once you’ve actually played the game.

The question is, besides the surprisingly nifty Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation for PlayStation Vita (which also launches today), will ACIII wrap-up enough loose ends to qualify as a satisfying end for the franchise for those who don’t want more? It’s obvious that Ubisoft would like to continue a popular franchise, but with this being both the end of Desmond’s story (the character who serves as the unifying framework of the series) and the assumed resolution of the 2012 doomsday plotline, will there be a good reason for continuing the story? Or will a few concepts be left unresolved just for the sake of the ongoing franchise? As excited as I am for ACIII, I’m kind of hoping that I have the option to leave the franchise after this year with a good conclusion and not feel obligated to play every future release.
