Star Trek TNG in HD Official Teaser
So it’s official, StarTrek.com has confirmed the upcoming release of Star Trek: The Next Generation in high definition. The three episode Blu-ray sampler Star Trek: The Next Generation — The Next Level is now set for an official release on January 31st, 2012. Priced at $21.99, the disc will include the full-length version of the series premiere “Encounter at Far Point,” as well as the episodes “Sins of the Father” and “The Inner Light.” All of those episodes are pretty solid choices, but it just means we’ll have to wait until they finish with the rest of the series before we can get our hands on our favorite episodes like “The Best of Both Worlds.”
For those of you who are curious, the original series was shot with in widescreen with 35 mm film, but effect shots were only composited for the 4:3 broadcast prints. This means they’ll have to take their time creating new effects for every single episode, and I’m really excited to see how that ends up looking. There’s over 25,000 reels to go through, so it may be awhile, but when they’re finished, all seven seasons should see a Blu-ray release, and may even be broadcast in high-definition from that point on. Finally, each episode will eventually be converted to 7.1 audio, so those of you with home theater systems are in luck. Anyone else as excited about this as I am?
