NBC Rumored To Move Constantine To SyFy
Superhero or superhero-esque stories are very popular right now, and in the last two years, we’ve seen a bunch of shows start airing on network TV, of all things. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, and Gotham may not be pulling in the usual network TV ratings, but they’re succeeding in their intended demographic and keeping pace with the CW’s Arrow and Flash. But NBC’s Constantine is not doing so hot, partially because of what they’re allowed to get away with on network TV, and partially because Friday night is a horrible night for new TV. As the future of the show is uncertain, a rumor has surfaced that NBC may move it to another one of its networks: SyFy.
As always, take this rumor with a grain of salt, but sources are saying that NBC is considering the move not only to help its ratings, but also to allow the show to expand beyond a supernatural procedural. Such a move would allow the show to be darker, more graphic, and more complicated than the more conservative networks. And while those networks are good support for a series like S.H.I.E.L.D., the Hellblazer comics that Constantine is based on can get pretty dark. (Speaking of the comics, it seems that the show could possibly be renamed to Hellblazer if the move happens, which also seems like a solid idea.)
Even if this rumor is false, NBC should consider taking these actions anyway. It would leave them without a current superhero show, but there’s that Heroes Reborn mini-series on the horizon…
