For many gamers, the rest of the month won’t be about picking up the PS4 or Xbox One to play shiny next-gen games. No, they’ll be sticking with a top-down game with cartoony 3D models. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, a “direct” sequel to the seminal The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES), is out on November 22 in North America. Because blowing a 3DS game’s graphics on a big screen doesn’t look that great, Nintendo made a mostly-live-action TV ad to promote the game. It looks cool and reminds me of a time in the 90s when ads were mostly live-action skits that were sometimes tangentially related to the game itself. Now if only the game itself looked more like this or its concept art; I’ve heard buzz that the 3D effects are great, but that art style looks primitive and almost completely charmless. Read more…

Who would have thought that response to an open casting call for Star Wars Episode VII would have garnered a ridiculous response? That’s what happened in UK and Ireland, where thousands showed up in places like Bristol for a shot at two roles. Now you can submit your reel online with Cast It Talent for a chance to be in Disney’s continuation of the Star Wars franchise. You have until December 3 to get your entry in, so make it good and keep in mind that you’re potentially competing against the entire world! You can check out the descriptions of the two roles, Rachel and Thomas, below, though there’s a strong possibility that these are placeholder names. Read more…

North American fans of Neon Genesis Evangelion have been waiting since November 17, 2012 for the latest Rebuild of Evangelion movie. The remake/reboot/sequel/whatever movie series is already three films into the planned four-film story, but the third film, Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo, has yet to receive a North American release. But this January 2014, ELEVEN ARTS and FUNimation will be screening the film. It will mostly be shown in an English dubbed format, but some showings will feature the original Japanese dub with English subtitles. Read more…

So this is what it’s come to, huh? Unboxing videos are so popular that companies are not just putting out official unboxing videos, but they’re infusing them with high production values. After years of rumors and a longer previous console generation, the PS4 is launching this Friday, November 15, in North America. Sony wants to show you what you’ll be getting when you open your own box, and they’re showing you in style, reusing the set from the unboxing of Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories earlier this year. (I guess they have to cut costs somewhere.) It’s everything you’d expect to be in the box, including a mono headset, something the PS3 didn’t include by default. (That doomed the PS3 to a life without much audio chat compared to the Xbox 360, which generally included a headset.) Read more…

There was a lot of news to come out of Blizzcon, but one I found most interesting was director Duncan Jones talking about the Warcraft movie. The director of Moon and Source Code will be tackling the film, and he spoke about how the movie will focus on the origin story of orcs and humans, and the first meeting between Lothar and Durotan. It sounds like Blizzard is heavily involved in the making of the movie as well as offering input on the story and script. They did show off some concept art (below the jump) and mentioned that ILM would be creating the CG orcs. It’s currently scheduled to open December 18th 2015, which with Disney’s announcement a few days ago, now means it opens the same day as Star Wars Episode VII. Good luck! Read more…

The 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who is coming up on November 23rd, so I now give you permission to get very excited. The latest trailer has a much better look at everything that’ll be going on in the special, and it looks like there is a lot. Three doctors, Daleks, and redecorations — there’s plenty here. It’ll be interesting to see how much they explain about John Hurt’s Doctor, as well as the transition to the next Doctor. Then again, I’m not a hardcore Who fan, so perhaps this has been explained thoroughly already. Anyway, check out the trailer below! Read more…

Yup. Some new promotional images were sent out to hype up The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and while most of them were pretty standard, one really stood out to me: Spider-Man wearing a firefighter’s helmet. It appears he’s putting out a fire, yes, but why would he take the time to put the helmet on? Maybe we’re getting a bit more of that goofy, snarky Spider-Man I love? That’d be nice! Otherwise, there are also images of Electro (aka electric blue Jamie Foxx) and Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). We’ll also see Harry Osborn this time around ( Dane DeHaan), so I wonder if they’ll be introducing the Green Goblin soon? Read more…

Looks like it’s time to start up the rumor mill for Superman vs. Batman! After Zack Snyder announced that Man of Steel 2 would be a crossover feature with Batman (who was then announced to be played by Ben Affleck), fan’s minds ran wild. Would anyone else show up? Could this film set up the Justice League? There were tons of possibilities. Well, the rumors are starting to leak in and the first two are that Wonder Woman and Nightwing will also feature in the movie. Adam Driver is rumored to be up for the part of Nightwing, while the studio is choosing between Gal Gadot, Elodie Yung, and Olga Kurylenko for Wonder Woman. It could definitely broaden the scope of the movie a lot, and Warner Bros. has been looking for a way to utilize Wonder Woman correctly, so this may be the way! Read more…

At first I wasn’t very interested in Super Mario 3D World — it looked pretty similar to 3D Land and didn’t really seem to do much differently aside from the 4-player co-op. But these recent trailers and screenshots tell a completely different tale! Bright colors, vivid landscapes, and interesting world design! All the power ups look like a lot of fun too, and the lighting really works well with the models. Everything pops! And I really love the design and neon lighting of Bowser’s theme park world. I told you, Disney. I told you that you needed more time. Thankfully, they agreed, and the release date for Star Wars Episode VII has been set to December 18th, 2015. This is a bit further back than the original May 2015 date they wanted, but given the script troubles they’ve been having, it’s a good decision. Take any extension you can get, J.J.! Speaking of J.J., the director spoke about avoiding reading fan theories online, because he doesn’t want to accidentally use anyone’s ideas. He also mentioned that he knows that no one wants him to “mess with” their childhood, so he’s being very careful about what he does with this new trilogy. I hope hew and Lawrence Kasdan can work out a good script in time! Read more…

Yes, the RoboCop remake is closing in on us. Will it ruin our childhood? Will it drive our hopes for a good remake into the ground? Or will it just provide us with one of the silliest snippets all year: Samuel L. Jackson yelling at a camera, asking why America is “robo-phobic.” Maybe this will be some awful fun? This trailer is definitely better than the first one, and I still like the designs of some of the robots shown in the beginning. I’d think I’d just rather see an original film not tethered down by what it’s remaking. But try convincing Hollywood of that! The trailer is embedded below. Read more…

The image you see above is a life-size statue of Gollum from the Lord of the Rings. Yes, life-size. Gollum himself is 3 and a half feet tall, and with the stand included, it is 140 cm. Made out of fibreglass and then hand-painted, this is definitely something made to be a centerpiece of your home. That said, I’m not sure I could deal with having a realistic, life-size Gollum in my house all the time. What happens when you walk downstairs for a midnight snack and get startled by it when you turn the lights on? Alternately, you could leave it at the foot of your bed. After several years of not playing many board games, I got back into them in college. Since then, I’ve been trying out some new ones, but certain board games are classics, like Risk. There’s a new variant edition coming out soon: Risk: Mass Effect Galaxy at War Edition. This Mass Effect-flavored game has you taking control of one of three factions with their own win conditions to fight the Reapers, the main bad guys of the series. The game is available for pre-order for $50 and might be worth picking up if you want a new version of Risk or if you’re a fan of the game. Read more…

“Flying Fairy” might as well be say “Final Fantasy,” because Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is the most traditional Final Fantasy-esque game Square Enix has made in a while. After a lengthy period of no announcements, Square Enix confirmed that the game would be localized for North America and Europe. But as was the case with many other JRPGs as of late, the game is coming out in Europe first before America, with their December 6 launch right around the corner. Way to get our hopes up, Bruce. Two weeks ago, Bruce Campbell confirmed that Army of Darkness 2 would be made by Sam Raimi. Now, he’s backtracking on those “random comments,” saying that the film isn’t happening until the production company says something, like a movie release date or a start date for production. He also predicts bad news for fans of Fede Alvarez’s remake of Evil Dead, saying that Alvarez has moved on and not to expect a sequel. It’s a bit grim for fans who wanted more, but this is all to be expected when dealing with rumors and information given through unofficial channels. Read more…

Have you been watching the production videos of The Hobbit film trilogy? Nothing will ever match the sheer quantity and quality of the bonus content for The Lord of the Rings, but these have been pretty interesting for fans of Middle-earth. The latest production video covers the ten-week summer pick-up shoot, when more footage was shot for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (coming soon on December 13) and The Hobbit: There and Back Again (due out December 2014). Did you see the recently released Star Wars blooper reel? I’m not just talking general Star Wars, I’m talking the original film. Well, Slackatory took those bloopers and mixed them into the original trailer to create a “Derp Edition.” With shots of Han Solo munching on his mic and Stormtroopers sliding around, I’d say this gives the Special Edition a run for its money. Actually, if Lucas was still in charge of the franchise, I wouldn’t be surprised if he made a new cut with all the outtakes and called it his even truer vision. It’s no less strange than the fact that he had his team purposely animate Jar Jar stepping in poop. Read more…

At this point, it’s hard to tell whether Konami has been poorly communicating information about Metal Gear Solid V on purpose (a la Metal Gear Solid 2) or if it’s just due to their usual bad management. We had heard that there would be two parts to the upcoming sequel: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, a prologue (similar to MGS2‘s Tanker scenario), and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the main, longer game (similar to MGS2‘s Big Shell scenario). After the rather inelegant reveal that The Phantom Pain, a game advertised as an independent game made by a fake studio, was unsurprisingly MGSV, conflicting information suggested that both parts of the game would be sold together. Konami has just announced that this isn’t true: Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be released by itself in Spring 2014. Read more…

It’s rainy. But you’ve got to fix this mess and complete these puzzles. But it’s ok, you’re a robot! A very very sad robot. Reset is a sci-fi noir puzzle game, mixed with a little bit of mystery and atmosphere. While it’s still very early, and the game looks like it needs a little polish yet, I find the concept very intriguing. Portal has shown that you can tell a great story within a puzzle game, so I’m hoping the creators can pull off the mysterious story in Reset. Is humanity long gone? With Thor: The Dark World coming out later this month, Marvel wants to fire on all cylinders to keep the universe linked. So what else would you do other than cross over the one and only Marvel TV show with the big Marvel release of the holidays? Yup, Agents of SHIELD will get a Thor crossover episode. It won’t directly involve characters from the film, but rather the agents trying to “pick up the pieces” in the aftermath, threatening to destroy a member of the team. Maybe SHIELD gets to be the cleanup crew and someone snaps? He’s sick of cleaning up after these superheroes! Why can’t they clean up their own messes, right?! Read more…

Yup, the Minecraft hype train can’t be stopped! LEGO has had an incredible amount of success with their miniature Minecraft CUUSOO sets, and it now wants to replicate that on a larger scale! They’re going to be making minifigure-scale models that will expand to a whole line of sets. While they’re still in the very early phases, they’re asking for community input on what fans would like to see in the sets on their Facebook page. Now that ol’ JJ Abrams has moved on from the Treks to the Wars, someone else must take up his mantle. Who could it be? A lot of rumors have been hurtling around but Deadline is now reporting that Joe Cornish tops Paramount’s list for potential directors. The talented director most notably did Attack the Block, a great little film that featured an alien invasion and a group of people trying to survive. He did this on a pretty small budget, too, which probably makes him an attractive get for the studio. I’d definitely be up for seeing how he’d handle a third Star Trek film! Read more…

Well, I have good news and bad news, South Park fans. The good news is that Ubisoft has release a brand new 7-minute long gameplay trailer of South Park: The Stick of Truth. The bad news? They’ve delayed the game until March 4th, 2014. Yup, South Park has joined the list of games like Watch Dogs that couldn’t quite make their holiday deadline. While this is sad for many people, I’m sure, I always go by Miyamoto’s words of advice: releasing a game too soon ensures that it is bad forever, but in development, a bad game can eventually become good. Alright guys, I know it looks cheesy and really hammy, but I think The LEGO Movie looks really fun. I love that the majority of it is actually made out of LEGO parts — that’s real dedication. Sure, there’s some CGI and clever manipulation of bricks that couldn’t happen in real life, but still — impressive stuff! The cast also is pretty well-rounded, with some great comedy actors who can also, well, act! The directors are duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are most famous for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. I hope it turns out well! Read more…
