Howard Phillips Xbox

Howard Phillips was one of the most important at Nintendo, but after he left, he eventually wound up working for Microsoft during the launch of the original Xbox. Now he’s selling his Xbox launch package, featuring a translucent green Xbox with Bill Gate’s signature on the logo. Also included are two matching controllers, a “Ship-It” chip on commemorative plaque, a replica of the original Xbox prototype (the big “X” in the picture), and a variety of other launch items like a full set of Xbox trading cards. But there’s one very unique item for collectors in this package.

This launch package includes the very first disc submitted to Microsoft for certification. It’s a copy of NHL Hitz, Midway’s hockey game that isn’t that great, but this is where Xbox games started, and Howard Phillips has the first certification disc mounted. Of course, with such rare items (and a one-of-a-kind item) in the package, you can expect to pay a pretty high price. The starting bid is $5,000, and the reserve is also stated to be high. For the rest of us who can’t afford to collect games and rarities on that level, it’s just cool to take a peek at the kind of collectibles usually traded around by executives and other high-level personell.
