Nintendo Announces Wii U HD Remake of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is one of the most visually stunning games in the past decade, and a game that still looks just as beautiful in today’s high-def era. (It looks even better when emulated and rerendered into HD!) The world will eventually see a full, new Zelda adventure in HD at some point during the Wii U’s lifespan, but before then, Nintendo is working on something to tide us over: an official HD remake of The Wind Waker.
There’s not really an official trailer yet, but Nintendo showed off a comparison between the original game and the HD update. It’s not a simple matter of increasing the resolution like some companies (looking at you, Capcom), but a retooling of the art assets. I would actually be fine with a normal uprezing, since this new style loses some of the elegant simplicity of the flat cel-shading, but it’s basically the difference between a cartoon and vinyl toys.
It’s still beautiful, and there’s the possibility that Nintendo may tweak some parts of the game. I’d love to see them reexamine the boring Triforce quest at the end of the game and some of the final dungeon areas, or reincorporate content that was cut from the game. Until we know more, just watch the video!
